In this paper a novel soft switching isolated buck rectifier is proposed. Various switching state sequences of a three-phase three-switch buck-type unity power factor rectifier are reviewed and the value of switching power loss in each state transition is investigated. The switching power loss of the converter is decreased by using zero current switching (ZCS) method. The operation modes of the converter are explained and analyzed. By using an auxiliary circuit with a simple method of energy recovery, the current is diverted away from the main power switches before they are turned off; so, switching losses in the converter are reduced. In this topology, the power transformer has only the primary and the secondary windings and the transformer is demagnetized in each switching period without the demagnetizing winding. The auxiliary circuit consists of an auxiliary switch and a resonant inductance-capacitance circuit connected to the auxiliary switch. The proper operation of the converter is confirmed by the results obtained from the digital simulations.

Identification of voltage and current disturbances is an important task in power system monitoring and protection. In this paper, a new algorithm for online characterization of a wide range of voltage disturbances based on two dimensional wavelet transformation is proposed. This algorithm is more complicated than algorithms based on one dimensional wavelet transformation, but it's more precise and is useful for steady state disturbances, transients with slow variations and transients with rapid changes. After each five cycles, a matrix is formed based on the last fourteen cycles, in a way that the voltage signal in one cycle forms one row of the matrix. Then, the resulted image is decomposed into approximation and details by two dimensional wavelet transformation. Details contain the useful information. By processing the details, special patterns associated with each type of disturbance can be detected. A new algorithm is proposed for extracting suitable features of disturbances based on the details. At the end, the algorithm is implemented using the nearest neighbor classifier system.

Congestion management is one of the most important issues for secure and reliable system operations in deregulated electricity market. This paper presents a cost/worth analysis approach for optimal location and sizing of Distributed Resources (DRs) to mitigate congestion and increase security of the system. In order to reduce the solution space a priority of candidate buses is formed, then optimal location and sizing problem is discussed. To increase the accuracy of results, load duration curve is constituted and based on this curve different load levels are incorporated into this study. Proposed method considers economical factors such as congestion rent, deferred upgrading investment and DR costs. The proposed method is illustrated using IEEE Reliability Test system (RTS) and the impacts of considering different parameters such as load growth rate and different load levels are studied. Obtained results show that the proposed methodology is capable of finding the best location and optimal size of DR that can reduce congestion in the transmission system. ©2010 IEEE.

A novel control method is proposed for single-stage three-phase isolated buck+boost rectifier. The control method is based on the conventional cascade two-loop control structure and is modified to achieve constant instantaneous input power. Input voltages, output voltage, and DC-link inductor current are measured to control the power switches to achieve output voltage regulation as well as input power factor correction. In the proposed method, input currents are controlled such that input power is constant even for unbalanced mains. Thus for balanced mains converter behaves like an ideal rectifier, and for unbalanced mains, low-frequency harmonics of the output voltage are suppressed. The performance of the proposed control structure is verified by numerical simulation of a 6 kW, 380V/48Vdc designed prototype.

The paper presents a novel vector control structure for the Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine (BDFM) which is derived based on the machine synchronous operation. In fact, the synchronous operation of the BDFM provides an efficient approach for determining the required reference angle in the machine vector control structure. The utilization of such reference angle makes the vector control structure presented in this paper different from and, in fact, more effective than the existing rotor flux and stator flux orientation schemes proposed for the machine. The results of implementing the vector control scheme in simulations confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach for the BDFM control.

There are a lot of parameters which are decisive in distribution loss management, such as demand value, energy price, etc. In this paper the cause-and-effect relationships among some of these variables are clearly described. The study demonstrates how a variable in the model will change, if an alteration in one of the other variables occurs. The power system variables considered in this study include energy and loss prices, generation and demand values, distribution loss, distribution system age, number of customers connected to the smart grid, distribution network revenue, and so forth. The smart grid impacts can be studied from two different aspects: 1) the communication infrastructure available throughout the smart grid increases the speed at which different system parameters are changed due to a change in a specific parameter and 2) the end-users have more control over what happens to the whole distribution system. A graphical representation technique, called “Causal Loop Diagram”, is employed in order to illuminate the cause-and-effect relationships among variables. This kind of study helps us to acquire a comprehensive understanding of the whole distribution system from the loss perspective. The survey involves studying the effects both on the distribution management system and the end-users.

This paper proposes a high performance voltage tracking and current sharing among parallel connected inverters by applying optimal control and minimizing the cost function. The control system forces the voltage of load to track the voltage reference, and the current of all inverters becomes equal. Therefore, both current sharing and voltage tracking are obtained. In addition, the smallest input energy and simplicity in control circuit are the other advantages of the suggested method. To show the performance of the proposed control scheme, the simulations with two-modular practical systems are performed and the results are provided. The results indicate that the control objectives are achieved even if there are parameters mismatch among the parallel modules.

This paper presents a novel approach for evaluating the reliability of protective systems taking into account its components reliability. In this paper, a previously proposed extended model is used for Directional Overcurrent scheme. In the extended model, the impacts of individual protective components are taken into account. An optimum routine test schedule is determined for each protective component as a separate unit. A comparison is made to show that the proposed approach has excellence over conventional routine test inspections. Impacts of factors such as circuit breaker inadvertent opening, required time for performing routine test inspections, human mistakes and self-checking and monitoring effectiveness is analyzed using the model. Redundancy in some parts of the protective system is examined. Permanent and transient faults on the protected zone, operation of backup protection and Common-Cause failures are also recognized in the model.

A space vector modulation (SVM) approach is proposed to control a four-switch rectifier with power factor correction and compensating the effect of capacitors voltage ripple. The theory and performance of this method are presented, and the method effectiveness is demonstrated by extensive simulations. The simulation results show that the capacitor voltage ripple effects in the output voltage and current shaping can be omitted and the rectifier can work agreeably under high power factor condition although capacitors voltage is not balance. The allowable amount of this unbalanced value of filter capacitors is determined.

In this paper, the power quality of a single-phase photovoltaic grid connected inverter when uses active islanding detection methods is investigated. Two main groups of these methods are analyzed in this paper. The main focus is on the output power quality of PV sources for these methods. Also the variation of output current THD, while the output power changes, is explored. The variation of output current THD is measured when the parameters of active islanding detection method are changed, and the limitation of these parameters for complying power quality standards in the nominal output power is detected.
