Demand response (DR) as a state-of-the-art program is accommodated in the energy efficiency contexts of the smart grid. Lack of the customer knowledge about how to respond to the time-differentiated tariffs and offered controlling signals is the major obstacle in the way of broad DR implementing. As a solution, an optimization method, namely load control (LC), is proposed to automatically control the on/off status of the responsive appliances in a smart home. This paper focuses on the direct load control (DLC) program in the category of incentive-based DR programs. LC is extended to consider inconvenience cost of the DLC implementation for DLC program participants. Outputs of the extended LC would be an advice for the customer to determine whether it is financially profitable to participate in the offered DLC program or not. Numerical studies are effectuated to investigate different features of the LC and DLC program.

This paper depicts a new configuration for modular hybrid power conversion systems, namely, multi-hybrid generation system (MHGS), and parallel connection at the output, such that the converter of each unit shares the load current equally. This is a significant step towards realizing a modular power conversion system architecture, where smaller units can be connected in any series/parallel grouping to realize any required unit specifications. The supercapacitor (SC) as a complementary source is used to compensate for the slow transient response of the fuel cell (FC) as a main power source. It assists the FC to meet the grid power demand in order to achieve a better performance and dynamic behavior. Reliable control of the proposed MHGS with multiple units is also a challenging issue. In this paper, a simple control method to achieve active sharing of load current among MHGS modules is proposed. The simulation results verify the performance of the proposed structure and control scheme. © 2012 IEEE.

Critical components of a system denote to those which have considerable influences on its both technical and economical performance. This paper is concentrated on the identification of critical components in power distribution systems, more from a reliability viewpoint, to be planned for maintenance schedules. A new straightforward scheme is proposed based on the common load point reliability indices which can easily get through the components prioritization. The presented scheme can then mathematically find the most critical ones to be put under reliability centered maintenance (RCM). Since the maintenance plans are then applied where necessary, the proposed method helps in more effectively reaching the benchmarked reliability indices of a distribution utility, with the minimum costs and the maximum benefits. The effectiveness and applicability of the offered scheme are finally reflected in its application on a real distribution system, i.e. Swedish distribution network belonging to the BIRKA Nat distribution system in the Stockholm City area.

This paper presents a new method to simultaneously optimize components' size, set points of the control system and slope of PV panels of standalone hybrid energy systems (HESs) using the Passive Congregation PSO (PSOPC) approach. New control set points are defined for the HES, and a new operation strategy is presented based on the defined set points. The optimization algorithm determines the optimal values of the set points to efficiently optimize the HES operation. The effectiveness of the proposed control set points is finally verified through some numerical analyses. In this regard, the proposed optimization method is employed to optimize various HES configurations and compared with other methods using practical data of a remote area in Iran. Sensitivity analyses have been also conducted on the control set points and system uncertainties to investigate their impacts on the optimization results.

A massive focus has recently been made on demand response (DR) programs, aimed to the electricity price reduction, reliability improvement, and energy efficiency. Basically, DR programs are divided into twofold main categories, namely incentive-based programs and price- or time-based programs. The focus of this paper is on priced-based DR programs including consumer responses to the time differentiated pricing. Home load management (HLM) program is designed to control responsive appliances and charging/discharging cycles of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) by the consumer. Uncertain parameters associated with PHEV, i.e. its departure/travelling time and energy consumption as well as the grid unavailability in serving the loads are incorporated in the proposed probabilistic HLM model. Numerical simulations are conducted to illustrate the investigated notions and to verify the advantages of the developed model. © 2012 IEEE.

One of the most important issues in the smart grid is to quantitatively assess the impacts of distributed energy resources (DER) on the distribution system reliability. Solar cells (SCs) as developing DERs are normally placed close to the load centers. In this paper, a new algorithm is developed to evaluate distribution system reliability, considering SCs in the vicinity of the end-users. The probabilistic nature of the demand and SC power output are investigated to solve challenges of integrating these intermittent resources with the distribution system. In a smart home, to handle the variation of SC generation, solar load controller (SLC) is utilized to match load and generation of SCs during the islanding mode. Harmonizing load and generation by SLC may cause continual fluctuation in the on/off mode of appliances. In this paper, a structure is proposed to supply the critical load throughout periods in which SC cannot supply the entire associated demand. Simulation results reveal that the proposed method outperforms the conventional one, particularly from the accuracy points of view, while keeping the simplicity and elegance in a reasonable range. Numerical simulations are investigated to verify the miscellaneous aspects of the proposed approach. © 2012 Amirkabir Univ of Tech.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology provides one of the most promising solutions to tackle the threatening challenges such as air pollution in urban areas. Dramatic increases in the number of PHEVs could have major impacts on power system operations because of their high electricity demand. From the distribution system operator facet, distribution system congestion during PHEVs charging is an economic and security concern. It is, therefore, necessary to investigate the effects of widespread using of PHEVs on the performance of distribution networks. In this paper, PHEV characteristics are exactly studied and a comprehensive model for investigation of PHEV impacts is achieved. The results would likely demonstrate distribution congestion arising from using PHEVs. controlled charging of PHEVs is a possible solution to the distribution congestion problem. In this work, optimal charging algorithm is developed which minimizes the electrical charging payment of customers. The optimization problem is solved by energy schedulers in each home. The output of the problem is the charging level for PHEVs in each period of the scheduling time. Results illustrate that due to noticeable likeness between the load behavior and tariffs, minimizing customer cost would likely lead to shave peak load and prevent distribution congestion.

Access to a computational tractable method for representing the system more realistically has always been an important issue in power system reliability assessment. The Post Optimal Analysis (POA), as a well recognized technique to attack a set of similar optimization problems, has been successfully used to assess the reliability of composite systems. This method exploits the similarity of the system states to speed up the contingency evaluation procedure without sacrificing the accuracy of the results. In this paper, the performance and practical feasibility of the POA technique for power system reliability evaluation is tested using the Iran power grid. The POA based approach is applicable in both sorts of state sampling methods namely analytical enumeration (AE) and Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). Considering the dimension of the Iran power grid, in this paper system states are sampled using the MCS approach. In the simulations, a diverse range of reliability indices at both overall system and individual load point levels are computed with/without POA accommodation. The accuracy and execution time associated with the POA based method are compared with those obtained using the conventional method. Although considerable efforts have been devoted to collect and compile equipments performance data in the Iran grid data collection system, the uncertainty in the availability data of components is inevitable. Accordingly, a sensitivity analysis is carried out to investigate the effects of possible errors in equipments forced outage rates (FORs). The impacts on system risk of different peak load levels are also investigated. © 2012 IEEE.

Continuity of service of wind energy conversion systems as well as their reliability and performances are some of the major concerns in this power generation area. Six-legs AC/DC/AC converters are normally used in modern wind energy systems like as in the system with a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG). A sudden failure of the converter can lead to the total or partial loss of the control of the phase currents and can cause serious system malfunction or shutdown. Therefore, to prevent the spread of the fault to the other system components and to ensure continuity of service, fault tolerant converter topologies associated to quick and effective fault detection and compensation methods must be implemented. In this paper, a fault tolerant AC/DC/AC converter for a wind energy conversion system based on a DFIG is studied. The presented six-legs converter uses an additional leg that replaces the faulty one after the fault detection. An FPGA is used for experimental implementation of the fault detection scheme, to assure the fast fault detection. A rapid prototyping based on an intermediate "FPGA in the loop" step is used for digital implementation. "FPGA in the loop" results as well as fully experimental results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed fault detection and fault tolerant control.
