This paper summarizes a presentation to be given at the IEEE power and Energy Society 2012 General Meeting, in the panel session “Demand response: analytics, practice, and challenges in smart grid environment”. The paper elaborates participation of demand response (DR) resources in electricity markets. Specially, different types of DR participation in the wholesale energy markets are discussed. Then, two DR program designs are presented which aim to enable customers' participation in day-ahead energy markets. The paper continues with presenting the modified structure of the day-ahead energy market in presence of the DR programs. The offer packages specifically designed for DR participation in the market are introduced, and the market clearing problems including DR programs are presented and discussed. In the last section, the paper outlines different benefits of DR participation in energy markets.

The demand for continuously available electronic power systems is increasing. power systems are mostly feeding safety critical loads requiring nonstop and fault tolerant operation. Therefore continuity of service is of a high importance in power generation units. Modern wind energy conversion systems are sensitive to failures in power switches and in current sensors. This paper presents a survey on some of the recent researches on fast fault detection and reconfiguration in AC-DC-AC converters for wind energy conversion systems.

Health, Margin and Risk states which in recent years are known as well-being reliability indices, provide a comprehensive adequacy assessment of bulk power system reliability studies. Conventional reliability information about power system operation only considered health and risk states which were not often adequate criteria both in system planning and utilization. It seems margin state as the intermediate condition between health and risk must be considered. Well-being method which is a approach to power system generation adequacy evaluation incorporates deterministic criteria in a probabilistic framework and provides system operating information in addition to risk assessment and can be evaluated using analytical techniques. The most important part of this approach is the algorithm for calculating the probability of each state. Besides, all system components, their behavior and their operational conditions such as transmission lines overloads and voltage drops should be considered in the calculations. In this context, this paper proposes a method to calculate more precise well-being indices using Monte Carlo simulation procedure and Fuzzy Logic algorithm while AC load flow is utilized for contingency analysis. The proposed method is then demonstrated on the RBTS to demonstrate the instance results. © 2011 Chamber of Turkish Electric.

A microgrid is a controllable component of the smart grid defined as a part of distribution network capable of supplying its own local load even in the case of disconnection from the upstream network. Microgrids incorporate large amount of renewable and non-renewable distributed generation (DG) that are connected to the system either directly or by power electronics (PE) interface. The diversity of technologies used in DGs and loads, high penetration of DGs, economic operation of DGs, dynamics of low-inertia conventional DGs and PE interfaced inertialess DGs and smart operation by means of enhanced communication infrastructure have raised challenges in widespread utilization of microgrids as basis of smart grids. power quality, protection, economic and secure operation, active management, communication, dynamics and control of microgrids are among the most important issues under research both in academy and industry. Technical concerns over dynamics of microgrids especially in autonomous (island) mode necessitate revision of current paradigms in control of energy systems. This paper addresses current challenges towards controlling microgrids and surveys dynamic modeling, stability and control of microgrids. Future trends in realizing smart grids through aggregation of microgrids and research needs in this path are discussed at the end of this paper. © 2011 IEEE.

In a practical power system, automating all the substations is neither affordable nor economically justifiable. On the other hand, the trend for electric power subsidies elimination in some regions, such as Iran, aggravates this situation. To enhance the cost effectiveness of distribution automation system, this paper proposes a novel applicable qualitative-quantitative method using analytical hierarchical process (AHP) to find the optimum placement of remote terminal units (RTU). Entire attempt is to contribute all the crucial technical and practical parameters related to this problem in order to find the most reliable solution. Optimum number of RTUs is determined using the concepts of reliability cost/worth taking into account the total cost of customer interruption and investment cost of RTUs. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is validated on a real distribution feeder of Iran's power grid. © 2011 IEEE.

The desire to decrease electrical loading by using energy efficient lighting has resulted in a high level of attention to replacing conventional incandescent lamps with compact fluorescent lamps (CFL). In Iran from energy management point of view, people are encouraged by ministry of power to use CFLs. Also after elimination of subsidies, the substantial increase in electric energy price resulted in a high level of penetration of CFLs in electricity grid. CFL is a nonlinear load, therefore it injects harmonic to the network. In past, due to lower application of CFL, these harmonics were ignored, however today by the widespread application of CFLs;these small sources are combined and have high effect on power distribution networks. This paper presents the results of an investigation on the effect of widespread application of CFLs on a real power distribution system of Iran. CFL has some disadvantages that should rectify gradually. However at present great use of this component may cause adverse effects especially on the distribution network. Most of the CFL disadvantages are related to its high level of harmonics. In this paper the interference of the harmonics generated by CFLs to a real distribution network of Iran power grid will be simulated and studied. Since the CFL employed in these network have a relatively poor quality, in this study three samples of the brands which are in wider use in Iran market are selected. The characteristic current of these samples are experimentally determined. After that, CFLs are modeled with considering the attenuation effect. For harmonic mitigation, optimize capacitor placement is done and at the end, Simulation results are discussed. © 2011 IEEE.

Unit Commitment is the optimization process for minimizing the total cost of real power generation meeting the generating units and the system constraints. With the restructuring in power systems, the matter of great concern is the fuel cost and consequently electricity price increase in some hours of the day. Accordingly, the optimum performance of Demand Side management (DSM) has been gaining great attention recently. In this paper, the effect of the optimum performance of Emergency Demand Response Program (EDRP) on the cost of the unit commitment problem considering the line flow constrains is scrutinized. Due to the fact that the simultaneous adoption of the unit commitment and demand response program is a complex non-linear problem with numerous discrete and continuous variables, it is logical to use the linear programming technique to effectively deal with these parameters. Having the GAMS software and CPLEX method exploited, the proposed method proved its effectiveness by numerically applied to a typical 3-bus and the IEEE 24-bus systems. © 2011 Iranian Assoc of Electrical.

So far, the need for power systems to be control automated has been approached. Moreover, the advent of smart technological infrastructures calls for a more systematic and well-designed schemes for data acquisition process. Hence, Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) are going to be considered as a crucial part of smart grid puzzle in power distribution systems. This paper aims to present a novel practical approach to have the RTU placement dilemma unraveled in power distribution systems. Practically approaching in this paper, some pragmatic factors of major importance in this respect are introduced. A framework with which the utility's experts' knowledge could be efficiently exploited is presented and handled through a robust decision making (DM) method referred to as Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP). To overcome the existing inaccuracies associated with the experts knowledge and to effectively deal with the existent uncertainties and imprecision in the conventional AHP approach, fuzzy sets theory is incorporated to reach the most reliable and optimal substations as the RTU placement candidates. The efforts are focused on the pragmatic aspects interrelated with the procedure. Being applied to a real distribution power system of Iran's power grid, the applicability and practicality of the proposed fuzzy AHP (FAHP) method is well approved. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper investigates a reliability-centered approach for the placement procedure of remote terminal units (RTUs) in power distribution systems. Entire attempt is contributed to incorporate the practical aspects interrelated with the problem, e.g. the accessibility to the candidate substations, the load point criticality, as well as the load probabilistic behavior and consequently the inevitable variation in the electricity price. The placement process is done through an optimization problem wherein the common reliability indices, as the decisive factors in the placement process, are going to be minimized. The approach is successfully applied to a real power distribution feeder of Iran's power grid and well demonstrates its applicability accompanied by its accuracy in dealing with the practical planning concerns. © 2011 IEEE.
