Fast fault detection and converter reconfiguration is necessary for fault tolerant doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) in wind energy conversion systems (WECS) to prevent further damage and to make possible the continuity of service. Extra sensors are needed in order to detect the faults rapidly. In this paper, a very fast FPGA-based fault detection scheme is presented that minimizes the number of additional voltage sensors. A fault tolerant converter topology for this application is studied. control and fault detection system are implemented on a single FPGA and Hardware in the Loop experiments are performed to evaluate the proposed detection scheme, the digital controller and the fault tolerant structure.

In this paper a novel soft switching isolated buck rectifier is proposed. Various switching state sequences of a three-phase three-switch buck-type unity power factor rectifier are reviewed and the value of switching power loss in each state transition is investigated. The switching power loss of the converter is decreased by using zero current switching (ZCS) method. The operation modes of the converter are explained and analyzed. By using an auxiliary circuit with a simple method of energy recovery, the current is diverted away from the main power switches before they are turned off;so, switching losses in the converter are reduced. In this topology, the power transformer has only the primary and the secondary windings and the transformer is demagnetized in each switching period without the demagnetizing winding. The auxiliary circuit consists of an auxiliary switch and a resonant inductance-capacitance circuit connected to the auxiliary switch. The proper operation of the converter is confirmed by the results obtained from the digital simulations. ©2010 IEEE.

In this paper, the Line-Modulated Fixed Off-Time method is used as the current control strategy for a power Factor Corrector (PFC) pre-regulator. A zero voltage switching PWM (ZVS-PWM) auxiliary circuit is configured to perform ZVS in the switches. Soft commutation of the main switch is achieved without additional current stress. A significant reduction in the total conduction loss is achieved, since the circulating current for the soft switching flows only through the auxiliary circuit and a minimum number of switching devices are involved in the circulating current path .The proposed rectifier uses a single converter instead of the conventional configuration composed of a four-diode front-end rectifier followed by a boost converter. A 250W, with an input ac voltage of 90-265 Vrms, output voltage of 400 Vdc and switching frequency of 100 kHz is designed and simulated to verify the system performance. ©2010 IEEE.

Providing more choices to customers for determining the cost of their required reliability levels is one of the most important targets of restructured power system. Centralized management of reliability in Vertically Integrated Utility (VIU) applying the same policies to different customers is replaced with decentralized management allowing customers to participate in reliability management based on their required reliability levels. Hence, the importance of implementing interruptible load contracts that specifies each customer's reliability level has been increased in power system studies. In this paper, stochastic programming based on Monte Carlo approach has been used to implement interruptible load contracts in security constrained unit commitment. The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated by applying it to a 6-bus system. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper proposes a stochastic mixed-integer programming (SMIP) model for the reliability-constrained unit commitment (RCUC) problem. The major objective of the paper is to examine both features of accuracy and efficiency of the proposed SMIP model of RCUC. The spinning reserve of generating units is considered as the only available reserve provision resource;however, the proposed formulation can be readily extended to comprise the other kind of reserve facilities. Expected load not served (ELNS) and loss of load probability (LOLP) are accommodated as the reliability constraints. Binding either or both reliability indices ensures the security of operation incorporating the stochastic nature of component outages. In this situation, the spinning reserve requirement is no longer considered explicitly. The Monte Carlo simulation method is used to generate scenarios for the proposed SMIP model. The scenario reduction method is also adopted to reduce computation burden of the proposed method. The IEEE reliability test system (RTS) is employed to numerically analyze the proposed model and the implementation issues are discussed. The simulations are conducted in the single- and multi-period bases and the performance of the model is investigated verses different reliability levels and various numbers of scenarios. ©2010 IEEE.

A novel control method is proposed for single-stage three-phase isolated buck+boost rectifier. The control method is based on the conventional cascade two-loop control structure and is modified to achieve constant instantaneous input power. Input voltages, output voltage, and DC-link inductor current are measured to control the power switches to achieve output voltage regulation as well as input power factor correction. In the proposed method, input currents are controlled such that input power is constant even for unbalanced mains. Thus for balanced mains converter behaves like an ideal rectifier, and for unbalanced mains, low-frequency harmonics of the output voltage are suppressed. The performance of the proposed control structure is verified by numerical simulation of a 6 kW, 380V/48Vdc designed prototype. © 2010 IEEE.

Identification of voltage and current disturbances is an important task in power system monitoring and protection. In this paper, a new algorithm for online characterization of a wide range of voltage disturbances based on two dimensional wavelet transformation is proposed. This algorithm is more complicated than algorithms based on one dimensional wavelet transformation, but it's more precise and is useful for steady state disturbances, transients with slow variations and transients with rapid changes. After each five cycles, a matrix is formed based on the last fourteen cycles, in a way that the voltage signal in one cycle forms one row of the matrix. Then, the resulted image is decomposed into approximation and details by two dimensional wavelet transformation. Details contain the useful information. By processing the details, special patterns associated with each type of disturbance can be detected. A new algorithm is proposed for extracting suitable features of disturbances based on the details. At the end, the algorithm is implemented using the nearest neighbor classifier system. © 2010 IEEE.
