This study aims to address the urban vehicle parking issues by proposing a solution using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) through image processing and a sensor-based hardware system. Integrating these technologies forms a Smart Parking Management System (SPMS) to automate parking processes and enhance the parking experience. The study aims to create an efficient system that eliminates manual vehicle registration and optimizes space utilization. ANPR and IoT-based sensors help users identify the available slots and pay only for the actual parking duration, which will help to minimize the fixed billing rates. The proposed ANPR system processes vehicle number plates at entry, ensuring seamless identification and eliminating manual registration. IoT sensors monitor real-time slot occupancy, transmitting data to a web admin panel. This panel provides insights such as entry and exit times, total parking duration, and billing costs, facilitating efficient management and remote monitoring. The ANPR-based SPMS reduces reliance on manual processes, streamlining entry procedures. By dynamically assessing slot availability through IoT sensors, users can locate unoccupied spaces quickly, which enhances user convenience. The web admin panel allows administrators to monitor the system remotely, ensuring smooth operations and maintaining accurate records. This study introduces a comprehensive solution to urban parking challenges by integrating ANPR and IoT technologies. The SPMS improves efficiency, reduces human resource needs, and enhances user experience with flexible billing based on actual duration. In mobile edge computing (MEC), task offloading can significantly reduce task execution latency and energy consumption of end user (EU). However, edge server (ES) resources are limited, necessitating efficient allocation to ensure the sustainable and healthy development for MEC system. In this paper, we propose a dynamic pricing mechanism based near-optimal resource allocation for elastic edge offloading. First, we construct a resource pricing model and accordingly develop the utility functions for both EU and ES, the optimal pricing model parameters are derived by optimizing the utility functions. In the meantime, our theoretical analysis reveals that the EU's utility function reaches a local maximum within the search range, but exhibits barely growth with increased resource allocation beyond this point. To this end, we further propose the Dynamic Inertia and Speed-Constrained particle swarm optimization (DISC-PSO) algorithm, which efficiently identifies the near-optimal resource allocation. Comprehensive simulation results validate the effectiveness of DISC-PSO algorithm, demonstrating that it significantly outperforms existing schemes by reducing the average number of iterations to reach a near-optimal solution by 86.88%, increasing the EU utility function value by 0.13%, and decreasing the variance of results by 96.78%. © 2025 IEEE. This paper investigates a distributed formation tracking control law for large-scale networks of mechanical systems. In particular, the formation network is represented by a directed communication graph with leaders and followers, where each agent is described as a port-Hamiltonian system with a constant mass matrix. Moreover, we adopt a distributed parameter approach to prove the scalable asymptotic stability of the network formation, i.e., the scalability with respect to the network size and the specific formation preservation. A simulation case illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed control approach.

Machine Translation has played a critical role in reducing language barriers, but its adaptation for Sign Language Machine Translation (SLMT) has been less explored. Existing works on SLMT mostly use the Transformer neural network which exhibits low performance due to the dynamic nature of the sign language. In this paper, we propose a novel Gated-Logarithmic Transformer (GLoT) that captures the long-term temporal dependencies of the sign language as a time-series data. We perform a comprehensive evaluation of GloT with the transformer and transformer-fusion models as a baseline, for Sign-to-Gloss-to-Text translation. Our results demonstrate that GLoT consistently outperforms the other models across all metrics. These findings underscore its potential to address the communication challenges faced by the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

This paper classifies and summarises the historical literature on carousel systems in automated storage and retrieval systems in recent years. As an automated storage and retrieval system for distribution centers and production facilities, carousels facilitate the storage and dispatching of goods, significantly improving warehouse turnover efficiency. Their performance have been investigated by many scholars and experts. As carousels evolve and upgrade, more and more innovative algorithms have been used to improve the efficiency of outbound carousel storage. In this paper, we collate articles investigating how the carousel system is stored inbound versus retrieved outbound. We then discuss articles on the dual-command model of automatic storage retrieval systems as a whole. By reviewing over 50 papers, we summarise research on how to store and unload goods, focusing on the performance of automatic storage retrieval systems under dual-command conditions. On this basis, we review the current research's limitations and suggest future research directions.

Event-based visual odometry is a specific branch of visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) techniques, which aims at solving tracking and mapping sub-problems (typically in parallel), by exploiting the special working principles of neuromorphic (i.e., event-based) cameras. Due to the motion-dependent nature of event data, explicit data association (i.e., feature matching) under large-baseline viewpoint changes is difficult to establish, making direct methods a more rational choice. However, state-of-the-art direct methods are limited by the high computational complexity of the mapping sub-problem and the degeneracy of camera pose tracking in certain degrees of freedom (DoF) in rotation. In this paper, we tackle these issues by building an event-based stereo visual-inertial odometry system on top of a direct pipeline [1]. Specifically, to speed up the mapping operation, we propose an efficient strategy for sampling contour points according to the local dynamics of events. The mapping performance is also improved in terms of structure completeness and local smoothness by merging the temporal stereo and static stereo results. To circumvent the degeneracy of camera pose tracking in recovering the pitch and yaw components of general 6-DoF motion, we introduce IMU measurements as motion priors via pre-integration. To this end, a compact back-end is proposed for continuously updating the IMU bias and predicting the linear velocity, enabling an accurate motion prediction for camera pose tracking. The resulting system scales well with modern high-resolution event cameras and leads to better global positioning accuracy in large-scale outdoor environments. Extensive evaluations on five publicly available datasets featuring different resolutions and scenarios justify the superior performance of the proposed system against five state-of-the-art methods. Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled systems have shown tremendous impact in our national defense and in our society due to recent advances in artificial neural networks, deep learning, machine learning, and Internet of Things, big data, computing and communications. New AI capabilities can improve efficiency, trust, and efficacy for mission critical applications for tactical autonomy with minimal supervision from human operators in multi-domain battlefield (MDB) environments that are complex, contested and unpredictable. Although AI-enabled tools have been responsive to people and complementary to human capabilities, in order to realize its full potential in tactical applications, there are several challenges to be addressed for making trustworthy, ethical, fair, real-time explainable AI-enabled autonomous systems. Collaborations between platforms/systems as well as joint human-machine learning/teaming could address many of these issues to provide trusted and shared understanding and delivering cost-effective and adaptive systems to assist operations across military domains (space, air, land, maritime, and cyber) at combat speed using a shared set of resources. In this paper, we present some challenges and perspectives for AI enabled tactical autonomy.

The MURDOC project introduces an application to enhance trustworthiness and explainability in computer vision models, focusing on camouflage detection. It aims to address the need for transparent and interpretable AI systems in sensitive domains such as security and defense. MURDOC integrates advanced eXplainable AI techniques including off-ramps for collecting interpretable insights, attention mechanisms for high-lighting relevant features, and a user-centric image pre-processing tool within the visualization interface. This paper offers an assessment of MURDOC's potential impact on trustworthiness and explainability in camouflaged object detection tasks. It discusses and assesses the potential effectiveness of off-ramps in gathering XAI output at various model stages, such as feature maps, attention mechanisms, and activation maps. Additionally, the paper investigates how user-driven image pre-processing mechanisms may enhance the trustworthiness of the model's predictions and decisions, allowing users to modify the input and observe prediction changes. As a work in progress, the development of MURDOC shows promise in bridging the gap for transparency and interpretability in camouflage detection. The paper also discusses the challenges, future directions, and potential applications of MURDOC's capabilities in diverse domains requiring transparent and trustworthy AI systems. The Internet has opened the floor to stakeholders by redefining the way of organizing, communicating, and collaborating that was initiated by the Web’s development. The advancement of the World Wide Web is an outright phenomenon and significant and we witnessed the evolution of the Web. As decentralized technologies continue to gain traction, Web3, or the decentralized internet, has emerged as a promising approach to enable a more secure, transparent, and privacy-preserved digital landscape. In this paper, we thoroughly conduct a systematic study to explore the challenges and opportunities encountered by blockchain developers in the context of decentralized applications (dApps) in Web3. We analyze a set of peer-reviewed research articles, whitepapers, and technical reports and present an in-depth understanding of the current state of Web3 development and its implications. Our finding indicates the opportunities that Web3 can facilitate, such as expanded use cases, enhanced security and privacy, decentralized infrastructure, and the potential for enabling inclusive development resources for blockchain developers. Additionally, we highlight various challenges that blockchain developers deal with including scalability, security, privacy, interoperability, and the need for standardized tools and frameworks along with various challenges in the software development lifecycle (SDLC). While there are significant challenges to overcome, the potential benefits of Web3 are substantial and could lead to a more inclusive, secure, and transparent digital ecosystem. Furthermore, we emphasize the importance of continued research, collaboration, and innovation among stakeholders to address the identified challenges and capitalize on Web3’s opportunities.

STDEN: Towards Physics-Guided Neural Networks for Traffic Flow Prediction

High-performance traffic flow prediction model designing, a core technology of Intelligent Transportation System, is a long-standing but still challenging task for industrial and academic communities. The lack of integration between physical principles and data-driven models is an important reason for limiting the development of this field. In the literature, physics-based methods can usually provide a clear interpretation of the dynamic process of traffic flow systems but are with limited accuracy, while data-driven methods, especially deep learning with black-box structures, can achieve improved performance but can not be fully trusted due to lack of a reasonable physical basis. To bridge the gap between purely data-driven and physics-driven approaches, we propose a physics-guided deep learning model named Spatio- Temporal Differential Equation Network (STDEN), which casts the physical mechanism of traffic flow dynamics into a deep neural network framework. Specifically, we assume the traffic flow on road networks is driven by a latent potential energy field (like water flows are driven by the gravity field), and model the spatio-temporal dynamic process of the potential energy field as a differential equation network. STDEN absorbs both the performance advantage of data-driven models and the interpretability of physics-based models, so is named a physics-guided prediction model. Experiments on three real-world traffic datasets in Beijing show that our model outperforms state-of-the-art baselines by a significant margin. A case study further verifies that STDEN can capture the mechanism of urban traffic and generate accurate predictions with physical meaning.
