Vision Transformers ( $V$ iTs) have made significant progress in achieving performance comparable to traditional convolutional neural networks in computer vision tasks. However, high computational complexity restricts their application to resource-constrained edge devices. Previous methods for pruning redundant tokens have shown that it is possible to balance performance and computational cost by reducing the number of tokens. Unfortunately, simply removing redundant tokens often leads to the loss of crucial information. To address this issue, we propose a novel token compression scheme called TA-ASF. This scheme considers both the global role of low-importance tokens and the redundancy among similar tokens. TA-ASF employs novel approaches for token sampling and fusion, which are directly applicable to $V$ iTs without introducing additional trainable parameters. A comprehensive evaluation against several edge devices demonstrates our method effectively reduces model complexity while preserving Top-1 accuracy. Experimental results show that on the ImageNet dataset, the proposed method reduces FLOPs by 37% and increases throughput by 1.48 times on the DeiT-S model, with only a 0.1% decrease in accuracy. Specifically, on the DeiT-B model, the proposed method decreases FLOPs by 35% and increases throughput by 1.52 times while maintaining the same accuracy.

Emotion recognition technology through analyzing the EEG signal is currently an essential concept in Artificial Intelligence and holds great potential in emotional health care, human-computer interaction, multimedia content recommendation, etc. Though there have been several works devoted to reviewing EEG-based emotion recognition, the content of these reviews needs to be updated. In addition, those works are either fragmented in content or only focus on specific techniques adopted in this area but neglect the holistic perspective of the entire technical routes. Hence, in this paper, we review from the perspective of researchers who try to take the first step on this topic. We review the recent representative works in the EEG-based emotion recognition research and provide a tutorial to guide the researchers to start from the beginning. The scientific basis of EEG-based emotion recognition in the psychological and physiological levels is introduced. Further, we categorize these reviewed works into different technical routes and illustrate the theoretical basis and the research motivation, which will help the readers better understand why those techniques are studied and employed. At last, existing challenges and future investigations are also discussed in this paper, which guides the researchers to decide potential future research directions. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic revealed the criticality of timely intervention in a situation exacerbated by a shortage in medical staff and equipment. Pain-level screening is the initial step toward identifying the severity of patient conditions. Automatic recognition of state and feelings help in identifying patient symptoms to take immediate adequate action and providing a patient-centric medical plan tailored to a patient's state. In this paper, we propose a framework for pain-level detection for deployment in the United Arab Emirates and assess its performance using the most used approaches in the literature. Exploring Layer Thinning of Exfoliated β-Tellurene and Room Temperature Photoluminescence with Large Exciton Binding Energy Revealed in β-TeO2

Due to its tunable band gap, anisotropic behavior, and superior thermoelectric properties, device applications using layered tellurene (Te) are becoming attractive. Here, we report a thinning technique for exfoliated tellurene nanosheets using thermal annealing in an oxygen environment. We characterize different thinning parameters including temperature and annealing time. Based on our measurements, we show that controlled layer thinning occurs in the narrow temperature range of 325 oC to 350 oC. We also show a reliable method to form β-tellurene oxide (β- TeO2), which is an emerging wide band gap semiconductor with promising electronic and optoelectronic properties. This wide band gap semiconductor exhibits a broad photoluminescence (PL) spectrum with multiple peaks covering the range 1.76 eV to 2.08 eV. This PL emission coupled with Raman spectra are strong evidence of the formation of 2D βTeO2. We discuss the results obtained and the mechanisms of Te thinning and β-TeO2 formation at different temperature regimes. We also discuss the optical band gap of β-TeO2 and show the existence of pronounced excitonic effects evident by the large exciton binding energy in this 2D β-TeO2 system that reach 1.54 eV to 1.62 eV for bulk to monolayer, respectively. Our work can be utilized to have better control over Te nanosheet thickness. Prototype-Wise Self-Knowledge Distillation for Few-Shot Segmentation

Few-shot segmentation was proposed to obtain segmentation results for a image with an unseen class by referring to a few labeled samples. However, due to the limited number of samples, many few-shot segmentation models suffer from poor generalization. Prototypical network-based few-shot segmentation still has issues with spatial inconsistency and prototype bias. Since the target class has different appearance in each image, some specific features in the prototypes generated from the support image and its mask do not accurately reflect the generalized features of the target class. To address the support prototype consistency issue, we put forward two modules: Data Augmentation Self-knowledge Distillation (DASKD) and Prototype-wise Regularization (PWR). The DASKD module focuses on enhancing spatial consistency by using data augmentation and self-knowledge distillation. Self-knowledge distillation helps the model acquire generalized features of the target class and learn hidden knowledge from the support images. The PWR module focuses on obtaining a more representative support prototype by conducting prototype-level loss to obtain support prototypes closer to the category center. Broad evaluation experiments on PASCAL-5i and COCO-20i demonstrate that our model outperforms the prior works on few-shot segmentation. Our approach surpasses the state of the art by 7.5% in PASCAL-5i and 4.2% in COCO-20i. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A head wearable antenna array embedded on a multilayer substrate to enable unidirectional radiation pattern, broad bandwidth and compact size for trans cranial radiofrequency stimulation is proposed. The top layer consists of $4\mathrm{x}4$ radiating patches, an EBG array and feeding network while the bottom layer consists of $4\mathrm{x}4$ MTM reflectors. The EBG array consists of 9-unit cells arranged near the feeding network to reduce the surface waves while the MTM reflectors compel the antenna to radiate towards the broadside thus achieving a unidirectional radiation pattern for the complete structure. A broad impedance bandwidth and compact size are achieved by using the DNG properties of the meta material. The unidirectional pattern along with compact size and broad bandwidth enable the proposed design to be used for transcranial radiof-requency stimulation and other biomedical applications.

This work presents the design of a model-based algorithm that detects and identifies the location of faults that may occur in Air Handling Unit (AHU) components such as valves or temperature sensors in large-scale buildings. The detection process is based on the design of residuals;i.e., the difference between measured and estimated values of the system states, and adaptive thresholds;i.e., an online signal designed to bound the residual under fault-free conditions, considering known bounds on modeling uncertainty and measurement noise. The presence of a fault in a certain AHU component may cause the corresponding residual to exceed the adaptive threshold, thus triggering an alarm. Different types of faults can affect the relations of residuals and thresholds in a distinct manner, which facilitates the design of a combinatorial logic to indicate the type and location of faults. Generally, the use of ChatGPT is encouraged, but it needs to be embedded into an updated curriculum with more emphasis on validity constraints, systems thinking, and ethics.

Edge computing has emerged as a killer technology for a hyper-connected world due to its distributed architecture and customer-proximity property. Combined edge nodes with the cloud data center, a cloud-edge computing paradigm is formed, whose resource ecosystem calls for competitive pricing and optimal resource allocation. However, it is not feasible to realize global information-based optimization since some information is kept private to their owners. To solve this challenge, this paper develops the user-independent hierarchical reverse game and the user-assisted hierarchical reverse game to depict the relationship among the resource provider, the resource tenant, and the resource user. The aim is to seek the optimal strategies for players without revealing any private information. The common trait of both games is to force the players to report the optimal strategies based on their actual private information. This salient trait can produce privacy-preservation optimization since there is no requirement for the players to release their individual information directly, and the optimal strategies of other players can be deduced naturally. The difference between the user-independent hierarchical reverse game and the user-assisted one is that the game rules are stipulated entirely by the provider and the tenants (edge nodes) in the former, while some game rules can be customized according to the advice of users in the latter. This leads the user-independent hierarchical reverse game is more concise and easy to guarantee the incentive compatibility constraint, while the user-assisted hierarchical reverse game can attract more users since the game rules can adapt to their economic status, requirements, and preferences. © 1975-2011 IEEE.
