This paper presents a new neural network-based approach for self-tuning control of nonlinear MIMO dynamic systems. According to the approach, a neural network ARMAX (NN-ARMAX) model of the system is identified and continuously updated, using an online training algorithm. Control design is accomplished by solving an optimal discrete-time linear quadratic tracking problem using an observable block companion form Kalman innovation model, which is built from the parameters of a local linear version of the NN-ARMAX model. The state-feedback control law is implemented using the Kalman estimated state, which is calculated without estimating the noise covariance properties. The effectiveness of the proposed control approach is illustrated using a simulation example.

Gait is an idiosyncratic biometric that can be used for human identification at a distance and as a result gained growing interest in intelligent visual surveillance. In this paper, an efficient gait recognition method based on describing subject outer body contour deformations using wavelet packets is proposed. With the use of matching pursuit algorithm, k bases of wavelet packet tree that have maximum similarity to the signal are selected and corresponding coefficients are used as features. Finally, transductive support vector machine (TSVM) classification is utilized on computed eigengait space for semi-supervised identification. The proposed method of selecting features which uses a complete orthogonal or near orthogonal basis from a wavelet packet library of bases and investigating the correlational structure of gait features for each individual using TSVM, result in encouraging identification performance.

Building upon of a set of innovative hands-on laboratory courses developed at Virginia Tech (VT) known as Lab-in-a-Box (LiaB), LiaB is now being expanded to Virginia Community Colleges (VCCS) where faculty from VT and the VCCS are working to incorporate LiaB into the engineering and engineering technology programs. As implemented at VT, the students design, build, and test at home various d.c. and a.c. circuits using an inexpensive electronics and demonstrate the operation of these circuits in an open classroom environment. LiaB covers topics ranging from simple resistive circuits to filters and provides students a physical representation of models created in various circuit modeling software programs. Modifications to the way in which the students are engaged in the LiaB experiments have been instituted at three VCCS community colleges to tailor the laboratory experience to instructional environment at each school. Learning materials are under development, to support students to achieve a deeper depth of learning of the underlying circuit theory. Non-traditional dissemination avenues, such as podcasts and Flash tutorials, are being considered as a means to engage students in the learning process. Evaluation of the courses and learning materials and assessment of the learning outcomes at VT and at the three VCCS has recently begun.

Parallel disk systems consume a significant amount of energy due to the large number of disks. To design economically attractive and environmentally friendly parallel disk systems, in this paper we design and evaluate an energy-aware prefetching strategy for parallel disk systems consisting of a small number of buffer disks and large number of data disks. Using buffer disks to temporarily handle requests for data disks, we can keep data disks in the low-power mode as long as possible. Our prefetching algorithm aims to group many small idle periods in data disks to form large idle periods, which in turn allow data disks to remain in the standby state to save energy. To achieve this goal, we utilize buffer disks to aggressively fetch popular data from regular data disks into buffer disks, thereby putting data disks into the standby state for longer time intervals. A centrepiece in the prefetching mechanism is an energy-saving prediction model, based on which we implement the energy-saving calculation module that is invoked in the prefetching algorithm. We quantitatively compare our energy-aware prefetching mechanism against existing solutions, including the dynamic power management strategy. Experimental results confirm that the buffer-disk-based prefetching can significantly reduce energy consumption in parallel disk systems by up to 50 percent. In addition, we systematically investigate the energy efficiency impact that varying disk power parameters has on our prefetching algorithm.

'Location cloaking' allows services to access larger location description (for instance, 'Austria'), instead of fine grained location information (for instance, 'a restaurant in Tyrol') to preserve privacy, while keeping any useful services (for instance, 'automatic language-translation') continuing. This paper proposes an extension of location/spatial cloaking technique for RDF data based on view-based access control. Our system starts from a fine-grained view defining method, making use of structural characteristics of interlinked RDF data. It supports cloaking of non-hierarchical data by allowing abstract hierarchy definitions of resources and views. We implement a prototype system named 'Husk' on top of an RDF repository system.

Rotary cement kiln is the main part of a cement plant that clinker is produced in it. Clinker is the main ingredient of cement. Continual and prolonged operation of rotary cement kiln is vital in cement factories. However, prolonged operation of the kiln is not possible and periodic repairs of the refractory lining would become necessary, due to non-linear phenomena existing in the kiln, such as sudden falls of coatings in the burning zone and probability of damages to the refractory materials during production. This is the basic reason behind the needs for a comprehensive model which is severely necessary for better control of this process. Such a model can be derived based on the mathematic analysis with consultation of expert operator experiences. In this paper both linear and nonlinear model are identified for rotary kiln of Saveh white cement factory. The linear model is introduced using Box-Jenkins structure. The results of the obtained model were satisfactory compared to some other linear models and can be used for designing adaptive or robust controllers. Also, nonlinear system identification via Neural Network technique is performed and its result was compared to linear models.

It is widely recommended by both academia and industry that today's technology and software engineering students be well prepared for industry before graduation, especially given global outsourcing and other trends. Various methods have been developed to ensure student readiness, including co-ops and capstone courses. These approaches increasingly use real-world projects for their benefits to industry and often to the community at large. In this paper, we argue that students can be prepared to effectively join industry and keep the US technology workforce competitive through a curriculum that includes a theoretical software engineering course with real-world projects and the collaboration of paired teams across two or more universities. We present a case study of a successful teaching experience that features these aspects, and describe the outcome along with the unique perspective of a participating student.

Reversible data embedding is a technique widely used to embed secret data into a specific media, such as military or medical images. In the past, many researchers have applied this scheme to the vector quantization (VQ) compression technique; however, the hiding capacity remains low. This paper proposes a novel data embedding scheme with reversibility for VQ compressed images. From our experimental results, we can confirm that the proposed scheme increases the hiding capacity and maintains high bit rates. Also, the VQ compressed images can be completely restored after extracting the embedded secret data.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has complementary spatiotemporal resolution compared to Electroencephalography (EEG) as well as Magnetoencephalography (MEG). Thus, their integrated analysis should improve the overall resolution. To integrate analysis of E/MEG and fMRI, we extend our previously proposed integrated E/MEG and fMRI neural mass model to a multi-area model by defining two types of connections: the Short-Range Connections (SRCs) between minicolumns within the areas and Long-Range Connections (LRCs) between inter-areas minicolumns. The nonlinear input/output relationship in the proposed model is derived from the state space representation of the multi-area model. The E/MEG signals are originated from the overall synaptic activities of the pyramidal cells of all minicolumns and can be calculated using the lead field matrix (i.e., forward electromagnetic model). The fMRI signal is extracted from the proposed integrated model by calculating the overall neural activities in the areas and using it as the input of the extended balloon model (EBM). Using the simulation results, the capabilities of the proposed model to generate E/MEG and fMRI signals is shown. In addition, changes in the dynamics of the model to variations of its parameters were evaluated and lead us to the appropriate ranges for the parameters. In conclusion, this work proposes an effective method to integrate E/MEG and fMRI for the more effective use of these techniques in functional neuroimaging. © 2009 SPIE.

This paper focuses on the development and application of a Neuro-Fuzzy (NF) networks-based scheme for Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) in a U-tube Steam Generator (UTSG). First, a NF network is trained with data collected from a full scale UTSG simulator, and residuals are generated for fault detection. To identify the UTSG, a Locally Linear Neuro-Fuzzy (LLNF) model is used. This model is trained using the Locally Linear Model Tree (LOLIMOT) algorithm which is an incremental tree structure algorithm. Then, an evolutionary algorithm is used to train a Mamdani type NF network to classify the residuals. The residuals are analyzed by using this NF classifier for fault isolation purposes.
