A QFT/EEAS Design of Multivariable Robust Adaptive Controllers

This paper presents a robust adaptive control design methodology for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) plants based on Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT) and Externally Excited Adaptive System (EEAS), both of which are the novel ideas of Horowitz. Self Oscillating Adaptive Systems (SOAS) are proposed to mainly overcome the problem of large gain variations, which is important in certain applications. To further improve the SOAS design, the idea of EEAS was developed. Finally, combined QFT and EEAS proposed a robust adaptive controller for SISO uncertain plants. However, due to the complex design nature of the proposed combined methodology and the difficulty of an optimal design, this line of Horowitz's research was not followed further. In this paper, to overcome the above mentioned problems the design procedure is reformulated as a set of cost functions and constraints. Genetic Algorithms are then used to solve the optimal design. Also, QFT/EEAS design is extended to multivariable uncertain plants. Sufficient conditions are derived to assure the achievement of given off-diagonal performance. Then, the given main channel performance could be achieved by using SISO QFT/EEAS method. Simulation studies indicate the effective performance of the proposed QFT/EEAS MIMO design methodology. It is shown that the proposed approach can handle large plant parameter uncertainties with lower loop bandwidths.

Efficient and scalable fault detection algorithm for grid systems

Aimed at the problem that grids are more prone to failures, and existing failure detection algorithms can not satisfy the unique requirement of grids, an efficient and scalable failure detection algorithm is then presented. According to the characteristics of grids and the small world theory, the authors established a small world based grid system model and a fault detection model;Combined unreliable fault detection method with heartbeat strategy and grey prediction model, they designed a dynamic heartbeat mechanism, and presented the efficient and scalable fault detection algorithm for grid systems further. They also analyzed the performance of the: algorithm theoretically, such as how to select performance factors, as well as accuracy, completeness and scalability of the algorithm. At last, experimental result demonstrates that the algorithm is valid and effective, can be used for fault detection under grid environments.

Analyses and syntheses are a pair of fundamental cognitive processes at the meta-inference layer of the brain. This paper presents the cognitive processes of analysis and synthesis as a part of the brainpsilas inference mechanisms. The cognitive foundations of analysis and synthesis are explored, and their mathematical models are created in concept algebra and system algebra by concept and/or system decomposition, composition, specification, and aggregation. Based on the cognitive and mathematical models, the cognitive processes of analysis and synthesis are formally described in real-time process algebra (RTPA). The formal modeling and rigorous explanation of this pair of cognitive processes for formal inference reveal a part of the mechanisms of the brain as modeled in the layered reference model of the brain (LRMB).

We build on PTIDES, a programming model for distributed embedded systems that uses discrete-event (DE) models as program specifications. PTIDES improves on distributed DE execution by allowing more concurrent event processing without backtracking. This paper discusses the general execution strategy for PTIDES, and provides two feasible implementations. This execution strategy is then extended with tolerance for hardware errors. We take a program transformation approach to automatically enhance DE models with incremental checkpointing and state recovery functionality. Our fault tolerance mechanism is lightweight and has low overhead. It requires very little human intervention. We incorporate this mechanism into PTIDES for efficient execution of fault- tolerant real-time distributed DE systems.

Sensor networks employed by scientific applications oftenneed to support localized collaboration of sensor nodes to perform in-network data processing. This includes new quantitative synthesis andhypothesis testing in near real time, as data streaming from distributedinstruments, to transform raw data into high level domain-dependent information. This paper investigates in-network data processing mechanismswith dynamic data requirements in resource constrained heterogeneoussensor networks. Particularly, we explore how the temporaland spatial correlation of sensor measurements can be used to trade offbetween the complexity of coordination among sensor clusters and thesavings that result from having fewer sensors involved in in-network processing,while maintaining an acceptable error threshold. Experimentalresults show that the proposed in-network mechanisms can facilitate theefficient usage of resources and satisfy data requirement in the presenceof dynamics and uncertainty.

Singular systems have been the subject of interest over the last two decades due to their many practical applications. But it has to be said that system identification of such system is still a challenging area because of the difficulty of identification of such systems for their complex structures. In addition, it seems that by developing a useful method for identification of singular system, one can use the useful property of such systems in describing the natural complex phenomena. This paper presents a novel methodology for identifying nonlinear singular systems from empirical data. Singular systems are idealized models for systems with slow and quick modes of change. However, their identification is a challenging problem even for the linear case. A new learning method, generalized locally linear model tree (GLoLiMoT) algorithm is introduced. The contribution of this paper is to provide a method for adjusting the parameters of fuzzy descriptor model, e.g. the splitting ratio and the standard deviation, the number of locally linear neurons or the number of linear singular systems for the consequent part in fuzzy descriptor model as well as the order of the singular system. By these modifications an accurate model of nonlinear singular system is obtained which is compared with several other methods in two case studies. Results depict the power of the proposed approach in describing nonlinear complex phenomena. © 2008 IEEE.

Designed to diminish the artifacts caused by application of the state-of-the-art error concealment methods, a hybrid error concealment scheme is introduced. The proposed scheme stands out by using the inherent spatial redundancy of natural images along with a data hiding technique to obtain the information required for reconstruction of the lost parts of the image at the receiver. Furthermore, to maintain the quality of the received image in high packet loss conditions, an alternative scheme is proposed which will be activated in response to a receiverpsilas feedback reporting a high packet loss ratio. Our simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing methods in terms of the quality of the received image and computational cost.

Recent researches reveal that various paradigms of intelligence, such as natural, artificial, machinable, and computational intelligence, can be unified at the logical and functional levels known as abstract intelligence. This paper introduces abstract intelligence as a form of driving force that transfers information into knowledge and behaviors. An architectural framework of abstract intelligence and the generic abstract intelligence mode (GAIM) are formally developed that provide a unified theory for explaining the mechanisms of advanced intelligence. In order to deal with the highly complex and abstract objects in abstract intelligence, denotational mathematics is introduced as a category of expressive mathematical structures for modeling and manipulating high-level mathematical entities beyond numbers and sets, such as abstract objects, complex relations, behavioral information, abstract concepts, knowledge, processes, and systems. Applications of denotational mathematics in abstract intelligence, cognitive informatics, and computational intelligence are elaborated.

This paper presents a cognitive informatics theory of visual information and knowledge processing in the brain and natural intelligence. A set of cognitive principles of visual perception is reviewed, such as the gestalt principles, the cognitive informatics principles, and the hypercolumn theory. A visual frame theory is developed to explain the visual information processing mechanisms of human vision, where the size of a unit visual frame is tested and calibrated based on vision experiments. Then, the framework of human visual information processing is established. Based on it, the mechanisms of visual information processing and the compatibility of internal representations between visual and abstract information and knowledge are elaborated.
