Water diffusion measurements have been shown to be sensitive to tissue cellular size, extra cellular volume, and membrane permeability. Therefore, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) by MRI can be used to characterize highly cellular regions of tumors versus acellular regions, distinguishing cystic regions from solid regions. An automatic segmentation method is proposed in this paper based on a multi-phase clustering algorithm to segment the brain tumors in a feature space extracted from DTI images. The algorithm is applied on images of a total of 20 patients with 4 different types of tumors. The tumor region segmentation was 92% accurate based on the segmentation results using anatomical images and 100% accurate based on biopsy results. In general, the segmentation results obtained by the proposed method revealed a strong agreement with the biopsy results and anatomical images, providing support for the accuracy and robustness of the proposed feature space and the segmentation procedure.

Link analysis is a critical component of current Internet search engines' results ranking software, which determines the ordering of query results returned to the user. The ordering of query results can have an enormous impact on web traffic and the resulting business activity of an enterprise; hence businesses have a strong interest in having their Web pages highly ranked in search engine results. This has led to attempts to artificially inflate page ranks by spamming the link structure of the Web. Building an artificial condensed link structure called a "link farm" is one technique to influence a page ranking system, such as the popular PageRank algorithm. In this paper, we present an approach to remove the bias due to link farms from PageRank computation. We propose a method to first measure the PageRank weight accumulated by link farms, and then distribute the weight to other web pages by a modification of the transition matrix in the standard PageRank algorithm. We present results of a selected Web graph that is manually spammed. The results show that the proposed approach can effectively reduce the bias from link farms in PageRank computation.

In this paper we present a linear time invariant controller for bilateral teleoperation of a pair of N-DOF linear robotic systems under constant time delay. Our framework uses position and velocity signals to achieve position tracking in free motion. It also uses force feedback for compensating the human/environment disturbances to achieve position coordination in contact tasks. In passifying position and velocity feedback terms, for simplicity reasons there is no need to consider the dynamics of the robotic systems as long as they satisfy Euler-Lagrangian dynamic system equation. However when the force feedback is applied, we have to consider the dynamics of the robot in controller design. We do passivity analysis in the frequency domain by using Parseval's identity. Simulation has been performed to illustrate the proposed algorithm and to clarify some points in the design procedure.

Given the requirement for software engineering graduates to operate in Global software Development (GSD) environments, educators need to develop teaching methods to enhance and instill GSD knowledge in their students. In this paper, we discuss two projects that provided students with a first-hand learning experience of working within GSD teams. One project was with Siemens Corporate Research, whose focus was to shadow the development of a real-life GSD project. The second project, whose focus was virtual team software testing, was carried out in collaboration with Ball State University. In parallel with these projects we undertook qualitative research during which we analyzed students' own written reflections and face-to-face interviews that focused on their learning experiences in these contexts. We identified three specific forms of learning which had taken place: pedagogical, pragmatic and the acquisition of specific globally distributed knowledge. Our findings confirm that mimicking real work settings has educational benefits for problem-based learning environments.

In this paper, we present a procedure for designing a digital proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller based on input-output data of an arbitrary stable plant without identifying plant models. Based on an impulse input to the plant, the response of the plant is obtained which is then used to directly find the stabilizing set of PID controllers. The method makes use of Tchebyshev representation for discrete- time systems and the set is determined by obtaining a set of linear inequalities with two unknowns while keeping the third parameter fixed. By sweeping on the third parameter, the entire set can be obtained. This result is useful because it does not depend upon knowing the model of the system and the operations performed are directly on the data obtained. It is also observed that the region becomes more and more accurate as more and more sample points are included. This is shown through illustrative examples.

Mutual information has been used in many clustering algorithms for measuring general dependencies between random data variables, but its difficulties in computing for small size datasets has limited its efficiency for clustering in many applications. A novel clustering method is proposed which estimates mutual information based on information potential computed pair-wise between data points and without any prior assumptions about cluster density function. The proposed algorithm increases the mutual information in each step in an agglomerative hierarchy scheme. We have shown experimentally that maximizing mutual information between data points and their class labels will lead to an efficient clustering. Experiments done on a variety of artificial and real datasets show the superiority of this algorithm, besides its low computational complexity, in comparison to other information based clustering methods and also some ordinary clustering algorithms.

software reengineering involves the activities of studying target system's architecture. However, enterprise legacy software systems tend to be large and complex. The analysis of system architecture therefore becomes a difficult task. To solve the problem, we propose an approach that decomposes software architecture to reduce the complexity associated with analyzing large scale architecture artifacts. Our study has shown that architecture decomposition is an efficient way to limit the complexity and risk associated with the re-engineering activities of a large legacy system. It divides the system into a collection of meaningful modular parts with low coupling, high cohesion, and minimizes the interface, thus to facilitate the incremental approach to implement the progressive software re-engineering process. To fulfill this goal, we have developed two major techniques to decompose legacy system architecture. In this paper, we present them in detail. The approach is also supported by our automated reverse engineering tools, and the preliminary experimental result shows our approach is very promising. Copyright 2007 ACM.

The combination of wireless mobile service and spatial information service introduces location-based services (LBS). LBS utilizes GIS, spatial positioning and embedded technologies in mobile computing environment to provide mobile terminal users location relevant information. The purpose of this paper is to design a framework supporting advanced LBS over 4G mobile-IP networks, with the transition of existing LBS services to an all mobile-IP based architecture. The architecture, compositions and challenges for LBS in 4G are discussed. The detailed functions of each component are presented. On the base of this, the research points in implementation including positioning methods, new service management model, mobile spatial data compression and transmission, data cache in mobile terminals are also proposed.

Hybrid approaches have been applied widely in image recognition system to adapt the increasing requirement of real-time and high accuracy and there are a lot of successful hybrid image recognition algorithms. To use hybrid approaches more effectively, some basic research about it is very necessary. This paper analyzes current typical hybrid samples, then presents basic hybrid image recognition patterns and evaluates their performance about real-time, accuracy, robustness, expandability and flexibility. At last a developing hybrid image recognition system would be introduced as a sample.

Anomaly detection is an important challenge for tasks such as fault diagnosis and intrusion detection in energy constrained wireless sensor networks. A key problem is how to minimise the communication overhead in the network while performing in-network computation when detecting anomalies. Our approach to this problem is based on a formulation that uses distributed, one-class quarter-sphere support vector machines to identify anomalous measurements in the data. We demonstrate using sensor data from the Great Duck Island Project that our distributed approach is energy efficient in terms of communication overhead while achieving comparable accuracy to a centralised scheme.
