In this paper, we propose an ultra wide band (UWB)-based full-body motion capture system for gait analysis. The system is designed to reduce the implementation complexity and cost of current gait analysis setups, which require expensive locomotion laboratories and equipment. The solution exploits recent developments in wearable computing (i.e., electronic textiles) and relies on estimating the relative distance between body-worn sensors through time-of-flight measurements. While such a system may find application in several areas, substantial research is still required to prove its feasibility and accuracy. From this perspective, the present contribution addresses two key aspects to enable its development: i) the interaction between UWB electromagnetic pulses and the human body is analyzed and, by contrast to most results in the literature, the body- induced pulse distortion is characterized in terms of an equivalent channel impulse response, and ii) by explicitly taking into account that body-induced distortion, the accuracy of various time-of- flight-based ranging algorithms is investigated.

It is generally agreed that faces are not recognized only by utilizing some holistic search among all learned faces, but also through a feature analysis that aimed to specify more important features of each specific face. This paper addresses a novel decision strategy that efficiently uses both holistic and facial component (left eye, right eye, nose and mouth) feature analysis to recognize faces. The proposed algorithm uses the whole face features in the first step of recognition task. If the decision machine fails to assign a class (with high confidence) then the individual facial components are processed and the resulting information are combined with those obtained from the whole face to assign the output. Simulation studies justify the superior performance of the proposed method as compared to that of Eigenface method. Experimental results also show that the proposed system is robust against small errors in facial component extractor.

A new approach to control system design has been implemented in the software described here. The set of controllers simultaneously satisfying multiple design specifications can be obtained without performing a traditional optimization procedure. The most notable strength of the method is that the entire set of controllers, satisfying some of the most important specifications such as stability and robust stability can be described first by sets of linear inequalities within which performance is sought. This paper describes the basic principle of the design method along with a series of examples for illustration.

Then the facial features of these probable candidates are compared and classified with the stored patterns in the train set. Finally the classification results are fused with a weighted majority voting to form the final decision. Simulation studies justify the superior performance of the proposed method as compared to that of Eigenface method.

software maintenance is a very expensive activity in software life cycle. As in conventional systems, Web-based applications also needs a considerable cost of maintenance efforts and in general the more cost because of their inherent complex architecture. To estimate the maintainability cost of software, many software metrics have been proposed. This paper presents the result of an experimental study to explore the relationship between maintainability and some typical software metrics. We have collected time really spent for maintenance activity for Web-based applications. In the experimental study, we have found that for web-based systems, the existing metrics may not be indicators to maintenance effort on the contrary to conventional systems.

Partnerships can be effective tools for engaging universities with their communities. In this paper we present an academia-government partnership between the software engineering, Graphics, and Visualization research group established in the department of computer Science at Rowan University and the Federal Aviation Administration's Simulation and Analysis Group at William J. Hughes Technical center in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This partnership was established with the primary goal of increasing Rowan University's computer Science undergraduate students exposure to real-world projects in software engineering and other upper-level courses, while allowing the FAA to receive quality professional software products by spending only limited resources. As a result, students acquire skills necessary to enter professional science and engineering occupations immediately after graduation. We present the major outcomes of this partnership, which include quality software products and publications in national conferences, and discuss the set up which allowed us to overcome both academia and government difficulties.

Data Modeling is an essential first step for data preparation in any data mining procedure. Conventional entity-relational (E-R) data modeling is lossy, irreproducible, and time-consuming especially when dealing with unstructured image data associated with complex systems like the human brain. We propose a methodological framework for more objective E-R data modeling by eliminating the structured content-dependent metadata associated with the unstructured data. The proposed method is applied to epilepsy-related image data and a system called the human brain image database system (HBIDS) is developed accordingly. Supported with navigation, segmentation, data fusion, and feature extraction modules, HBIDS provides a content-based support environment (C-BASE). Such an environment potentially provides an unlimited (ad hoc) query support with a reproducible and efficient database schema. Switching between different modalities of data, while confining the feature extractors within the object(s) of interest, HBIDS yields anatomically specific query results. The price of such scheme is large storage requirements and relatively high computational cost. Examples of navigation through unstructured image data and content-based retrieval are presented in this paper. The results show the potential of HBIDS in content-based data management for decision support systems in real life medical applications. © 2007 IEEE.

software risk advisory tools have been developed to support Verification and Validation (V&V) processes for NASA flight projects on the Constellation program. The Orthogonal Defect Classification COnstructive QUALity MOdel (ODC COQUALMO) predicts software defects introduced and removed classifying them with ODC defect types, allowing various tradeoff analyses. We have been exploring methods to design and optimize V&V processes with static and dynamic versions of the quality model by integrating it with different risk minimization techniques. These techniques allow "what-if" experimentation to determine the impact of V&V techniques on specific risks and overall flight risk. V&V techniques are quantified from a value-based perspective when the defect model is integrated with machine learning, strategic optimization and JPL's Defect Detection and Prevention (DDP) risk management method. Results to-date show that the automated methods are practical for flight projects to design higher value V&V processes in shorter time and with fewer resources.

Accurate iris detection is a crucial part of an iris recognition system. One of the main issues in iris segmentation is coping with occlusion that happens due to eyelids and eyelashes. In the literature, some various methods have been suggested to solve the occlusion problem. In this paper, two different segmentations of iris are presented. In the first algorithm, a circle is located around the pupil with an appropriate diameter. The iris area encircled by the circular boundary is used for recognition purposes then. In the second method, again a circle is located around the pupil with a larger diameter. This time, however, only the lower part of the encircled iris area is utilized for individual recognition. Wavelet-based texture features are used in the process. Hamming and harmonic mean distance classifiers are exploited as a mixed classifier in suggested algorithm. It is observed that relying on a smaller but more reliable part of the iris, though reducing the net amount of information, improves the overall performance. Experimental results on CASIA database show that our method has a promising performance with an accuracy of99.31. The sensitivity of the proposed method is analyzed versus contrast, illumination, and noise as well, where lower sensitivity to all factors is observed when the lower half of the iris is used for recognition.
