Intellectual capital and knowledge management literature is prolific relates to the importance of measuring intellectual capital but a few of the retrieved literature address the pragmatic application of these management philosophies within companies in real world. This paper explains a proposed method to measuring intellectual capital as a main source of sustainable competitive advantages for most companies especially in service sectors. Based on our research in measurement phases managers should decide about choosing the most appropriate indicators. We use fuzzy-AHP method to find these indicators in Iran insurance industry. Although the application of such model in other industries and in other countries can be arguable, to measuring IC in each industry in each country the application of proposed method seems useful

This paper describes a replication conducted to compare the effectiveness of inspectors using Perspective Based Reading (PBR) to the effectiveness of inspectors using a checklist. The goal of this replication was to better understand the complementary aspects of the PBR perspectives. To this end, a brief discussion of the original study is provided as well as a more detailed description of the replication. A detailed statistical analysis is then provided along with analysis of the PBR perspectives. For the individual PBR perspectives, we saw an interesting dichotomy: In the original study there was little overlap among the sets of defects found by each of the three perspectives, while in the replication two of the three perspectives found similar sets of defects on one of the two documents used in the study. Interestingly this document was the only case where the users of PBR were not more effective than the users of a checklist. This result leads to a new hypothesis that the complementary aspect of the PBR perspectives is the characteristic that provides the benefit over other defect detection techniques. © Springer Science + Business Media, Inc. 2006.

An orthogonal hill-climbing algorithm for dynamic optimization problems with continuous variables (labeled ODHC ) is proposed in present paper. The local peak climber is not a solution x, but rather a "niche", a small hyperrectangle. An orthogonal design method is employed on the niches for the niche to climb a potentially peak fast. An archive is used to store the latest found higher peaks for the ODHC algorithm learning from the past search. The randomly creating niches implement the global search. Numerical experiments show that the ODHC algorithm performs a lot better than the SOS (self organizing scouts) algorithm [J. Branke, T. Kaufler, C. Schmidt, and H. Schmeck. There are rather few articles in the literature so far that deal with dynamic multi-objective optimization problems. This article introduces a dynamic orthogonal multi-objective evolutionary algorithm called "DOMOEA", that generalizes an earlier paper of ours (on an orthogonal multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (OMOEA-II) (Zeng et al., 2005)) to dynamic environments. DOMOEA solves a particular class of dynamic multi-objective optimization problems, namely those that have continuous decision variables. This new algorithm uses the evolutionary results, before any environmental change, as the initial population after the environmental change. It applies an "orthogonal design method" to enhance the fitness of the population during the static stages between two successive changes of environment. We obtained satisfactory results when testing this algorithm against the benchmark problems proposed in the literature. Our new algorithm is based on an ordinary evolutionary algorithm that does not have the capacity to detect environmental changes. Hence it has a comparatively simple structure, making comparisons with other dynamic multi-objective evolutionary algorithms relatively easy.

Exploiting shared ontology with default information for web agents

When different agents communicate with each other, there needs to be some way to ensure that the meaning of what one agent embodies is accurately conveyed to another agent. It has been argued that ontologies play a key role in communication among different agents. However, in some situations, because there exist terminological heterogeneities and incompleteness of pieces of information among ontologies used by different agents, communication among agents will be very complex and difficult to tackle. In this paper, we proposed a solution to the problem for these situations. We used distributed description logic to model the mappings between ontologies used by different agents and further make a default extension to the DDL for default reasoning. Then, base on the default extension of the DDL model, a complete information query can be reduced to cheeking default satisfiability of the complex concept corresponding to the query. © 2006 SWPS.

K-BALL is a general method for localization of anatomical phenomena of the same origin with natural discrepancies distributed over a reference space, e.g., human brain anatomical structures. In this paper, we focus on information analysis step (2nd step) of K-BALL during which landmarks extracted in its first step are evaluated. We provide a framework in which rules are automatically generated based on estimated and derived models. We show that the rules based on the derived models can improve the overall success rate of K-BALL. Each rule evaluates the extracted points by producing an intermediate confidence factor (ICNF). A total confidence factor is calculated using ICNF's to facilitate the acceptance or rejection of a set of points as landmarks of interest. Using the rules merely based on the estimated models, simulation study produced an overall success rate of 91.8%. Using the rules based on both of the estimated and derived models, this rate increased to 92.5%

This paper presents a very fast and low-power address bus encoder which is less dependent on address bus width. Its encoding scheme is the same as T0-XOR encoding method but its encoder and decoder architectures are much faster. Both the analytical analysis and the simulation results show that the delay of proposed architecture is about one third of delay of optimized T0-XOR encoder/decoder.

This paper discusses modelling and prediction of faults in cellular networks. We derive probabilistic models of the cellular network systems in which the independence relations between the variables of interest are represented explicitly. We use a directed graph in which two nodes are connected by an edge if one is a direct cause of the other. We present the process of construction of a structure of a Bayesian network. We explored the complexity and performance of fault prediction using Bayesian network.

Our energy production increasingly depends on renewable energy sources, which impose new challenges for distributed and decentralized systems. One problem is that the availability of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar is not continuous as it is affected by meteorological factors. The challenge is to develop forecast methods capable of determining the level of power generation in near real-time in order to control power plants for optimal energy production. Another scenario is the identification of optimal locations for such power plants. In our collaborative project, these tasks are investigated in the domain of energy meteorology. For that purpose large data sources from many different sensors (e.g., satellites and ground stations) are the base for complex computations. The idea is to parallelize these computations in order to obtain significant speedup. This paper reports on an ongoing project employing Grid technologies in that context. Our approach to processing large data sets from a variety of heterogeneous data sources as well as ideas for parallel and distributed computing in energy meteorology are presented. Preliminary experience with several Grid middleware systems in our application scenario is discussed.
