K-BALL is a general method for localization of anatomical phenomena of the same origin with natural discrepancies distributed over a reference space, e.g., human brain anatomical structures. In this paper, we focus on information analysis step (2nd step) of K-BALL during which landmarks extracted in its first step are evaluated. We provide a framework in which rules are automatically generated based on estimated and derived models. We show that the rules based on the derived models can improve the overall success rate of K-BALL. Each rule evaluates the extracted points by producing an intermediate confidence factor (ICNF). A total confidence factor is calculated using ICNF's to facilitate the acceptance or rejection of a set of points as landmarks of interest. Using the rules merely based on the estimated models, simulation study produced an overall success rate of 91.8%. Using the rules based on both of the estimated and derived models, this rate increased to 92.5%

This paper discusses modelling and prediction of faults in cellular networks. We derive probabilistic models of the cellular network systems in which the independence relations between the variables of interest are represented explicitly. We use a directed graph in which two nodes are connected by an edge if one is a direct cause of the other. We present the process of construction of a structure of a Bayesian network. We explored the complexity and performance of fault prediction using Bayesian network.

This paper presents a very fast and low-power address bus encoder which is less dependent on address bus width. Its encoding scheme is the same as T0-XOR encoding method but its encoder and decoder architectures are much faster. Both the analytical analysis and the simulation results show that the delay of proposed architecture is about one third of delay of optimized T0-XOR encoder/decoder.

Our energy production increasingly depends on renewable energy sources, which impose new challenges for distributed and decentralized systems. One problem is that the availability of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar is not continuous as it is affected by meteorological factors. The challenge is to develop forecast methods capable of determining the level of power generation in near real-time in order to control power plants for optimal energy production. Another scenario is the identification of optimal locations for such power plants. In our collaborative project, these tasks are investigated in the domain of energy meteorology. For that purpose large data sources from many different sensors (e.g., satellites and ground stations) are the base for complex computations. The idea is to parallelize these computations in order to obtain significant speedup. This paper reports on an ongoing project employing Grid technologies in that context. Our approach to processing large data sets from a variety of heterogeneous data sources as well as ideas for parallel and distributed computing in energy meteorology are presented. Preliminary experience with several Grid middleware systems in our application scenario is discussed.

In clinical problems, numerous factors are usually involved in a medical syndrome. New advances in medicine provide a broad range of diagnosis methods to cover all aspects of a disease. However, huge amounts of raw information may confuse clinicians and decrease decision accuracy. computerized knowledge extraction is an active area of research in medical informatics. This paper suggests a new medical data mining approach using an advanced swarm intelligence data mining algorithm. Considering medical knowledge discovery difficulties, this approach addresses common issues such as missing value management and interactive rule extraction. Here, surgery candidate selection in temporal lobe epilepsy is the main target application. However, the general idea can be applied to other medical knowledge discovery problems. Experimental results show noticeable performance improvement in the final rule-set quality while the method is flexible and fast.

As the Internet becomes more mature and a part of our daily life, the management of its resources to provide guaranteed services is crucial and beyond the capability of every individual network domain. How to maintain its continuous services in critical conditions is a challenge and would affect the design of next generation network infrastructure. In this paper, we study the survivability of normal traffics under the influences of flooding-based denial of service attacks and propose a potential framework which would reduce such influences. Our research increases the understanding of the behaviors of flooding-based DoS attacks and provides potential trends for developing better malicious attack mitigating solutions. By taking advantages of the survivability of specific flows, the potential mechanisms will not change or only slightly change current network infrastructure and be able to perform quality of service for several existing applications with no or little investment.

Using archetypes is a promising approach in providing semantic interoperability among healthcare systems. To realise archetype based interoperability, the healthcare systems need to discover the existing archetypes, based on their semantics;annotate their archetypes with ontologies;compose templates from archetypes and retrieve corresponding data from the underlying medical information systems. In this paper, we describe how ebXML Registry semantic constructs can be used for annotating, storing, discovering and retrieving archetypes. For semantic annotation of archetypes, we present an example of an archetype metadata ontology anddescribe the techniques to access archetype semantics through ebXML query facilities. We present a GUI query facility and describe how the stored procedures, which we introduce, move the semantic support beyond what is currently available in ebXML registries. We also address how archetype data can be retrieved from clinical information systems by using ebXML web services. A comparison of web service technology with the ebXML messaging system is provided to justify the reasons for using web services. Copyright © 2006 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

The focus of this paper is to devise a service-oriented architecture for multi-agents system (called SAM), to reach a wide adoption and routine use of agents, web services, and semantic web technologies. In order to better integrate agents, web applications and information sources in an open and distributed environment such as the Internet, a service matchmaker called middle agent is responsible for registering and spotting services in SAM. In the making of the service matchmaker there are four components involved: (1) a possibilistic Petri-nets (PPN) based service matchmaking mechanism for discovering services, (2) a service description language based on PPN for describing agent services and web services, (3) a set of ontologies for facilitating the semantic matchmaking, and (4) newly-defined extension mechanisms for bridging the linkage between web service standards and the service matchmaker through a translator.

When agents are initially created, they have little knowledge and experience with relatively low capability. They strive to adapt themselves to the changing environment. It is an advantage if they have the ability to learn and evolve. This paper addresses evolution of intelligent agents in transport information system. Fuzzy theory and ontological reasoning approach are proposed as evolution mechanisms, and fuzzy soft goal is introduced to facilitate the evolution process. Genetic programming operators are employed to restructure agents in the proposed multi-agent evolution cycle. We have also built an agent system to demonstrate our approach.
