Robust nonlinear controller design with constraint on the poles' location of the linear part of closed-loop system is proposed. The design method is based on the integrator backstepping procedure and linear constrained H ∞ for nonlinear strict-feedback systems with disturbance also in strict-feedback form. The resulted closedloop system will be globally stable, while both local robustness and desired α-stability are achieved. An analytic example is used to compare the performance of the proposed methodology with that of the locally optimal backstepping design with no closed-loop poles constraint. Copyright © 2005 IFAC.

Active Queue Management (AQM) applies a suitable control policy upon detecting congestion in networks. in this paper, an adaptive Proportional-Integral (PI) controller based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) is applied to AQM for the objective of congestion avoidance and control in middle nodes. The proposed controller is simple and can be easily implemented in high-speed routers. Neural Network PI (NNPI) dynamically adapts its parameters with respect to changes in the system. It is anticipated that this results in better response compared to linear controllers due to the nonlinear nature of NNPI. We simulated our method in ns2 and compared its performance with the conventional PI controller. The simulation results show NNPI yields better performance. Copyright © 2005 IFAC.

The problem of designing a linear controller for nonlinear polynomial systems that results the largest domain of attraction is considered. Moreover, using the proposed algorithm, the shape of the approximation of domain of attraction can be defined, due to importance and change of different states of system. To compute the estimate of the region of attraction, a Lyapunov function has been used. The designing problem involves solving a double non-convex optimization problem, which can be changed to a semi-convex optimization problem, via Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI). © 2005 IEEE.

software co-evolution can be characterised as a way to "adjust" any given software implementation to a change ("shift") in the software requirements. In this paper, we propose a formal definition of evolution complexity to precisely quantify the cost of adjusting a particular implementation to a change ("shift") in the requirements. As a validation, we show that this definition formalises intuition about the evolvability of design patterns. © 2005 Elsevier B.V.

Agile and systematic development is important in Web application methodology because clients expect their frequent requirement changes to be implemented rapidly and regularly. However, previous studies may not be suitable for such development. In this paper we propose a methodology for agile and somewhat systematic development of Web application. The methodology includes models, tools, and an agile process. The models extended from UML focus on the behavior of Web application. The agile process aims to have quick-to-market property and adaptability to requirement changes. Tools including Process Manager and Web Modeler support process execution and modeling activity to guide developers in applying the process. An example of university assets management system and a comparison between our methodology and other processes are given to validate our methodology. © 2005 IEEE.

This paper addresses the design of state feedback H∞ robust controller that satisfies additional constraints on closed-loop poles location. Desired closed-loop poles location is considered to be a clipped sector, corresponding to some performance specifications such as suitable settling time and overshoot. In order to solve the H∞ optimization problem with two Lyapunov constraints, the Lagrange multiplier is used. It is shown that the appropriate controller is characterized by three coupled Algebraic Riccati Equations. The validity and applicability of this approach are illustrated by two benchmark examples and the results are compared with those of the conventional H∞ control problem and related works. © 2005 IEEE.

Secure Progressively Updatable Traffic Emergency Response System (SPUTERS) is a framework for collecting traffic-surveillance data in crash-prone areas of roadways. SPUTERS receives as input video, audio, and text-based data from an integrated collection of distributed cameras and sensors, both vehicle-borne and those embedded in the roadway infrastructure. Under nominal roadway operating conditions, the multimedia data are used to develop incident countermeasures. During degraded modes of roadway operation, SPUTERS generates progressive updates to create a shared situational awareness among the people who orchestrate responses to traffic incidents and emergencies. In addition to addressing performance-oriented quality-of-service requirements for interactive display of data on Itandheld devices, SPUTERS relies on role-based access control to safeguard the privacy of roadway users under surveillance, preventing privileged information collected and managed by the system from being leaked to unauthorized persons. In order to enhance security, SPUTERS uses symmetric key encryption to guard against the unauthorized alteration of the surveillance data. Copyright © Taylor and Francis Inc.

This paper describes a process dispatching technique that supports the execution of real-time processes specified in real-time process algebra (RTPA). The conventional formal methods provide a mathematical language in which the developer may describe the system data types and operations to be executed upon them. Theoretically, the developer would be able to develop a mathematical model of the system, proceed with the various stages of development, and at each stage check if the system still meets its specifications. However, most of the formal specifications are lack stringent validation techniques, do not ensure that the design satisfies its specifications. Further, most of them cannot satisfy efficiently the expression of system architecture, behaviors, and their implementation with a coherent notation system. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that real-time operating system, particularly its process dispatching mechanisms, can be formally and rigorously described using RTPA specifications. © 2005 IEEE.

SEMEST+ is an extended version of the software engineering measurement expert system tool (SEMEST), which provides a rule-based software engineering measurement and analysis system on the Internet. The core part of SEMEST+ is the measurement knowledge base. Therefore, how to represent the knowledge of experts is the central issue in designing the system. In classical rule base systems, a rule may be specified using some special language, such as Prolog, with a built-in backward chaining inference engine for implementing an expert system. However, it is impossible for SEMEST+ to use Prolog for implementing a complicated web-based application. Therefore, we should adopt a modern language to represent the inference rules and at the same time utilize the advantage of a generic database system to maintain the knowledge. Since XML has become the standard platform for structured data exchange especially on web applications, the knowledge rules of SEMEST+ are represented in XML. The SEMEST+ inference engine is implemented in Java. Based on both measurement classical theories and industrial experience, SEMEST+ is implemented as a multiple-layered web-based system supported by an expert inference engine and a knowledge base. SEMEST+ provides five categories of expert support, known as the goal-, process-, category-, application-domain- and organization-role-oriented measurement analyses, for the software industry to practice quantitative software engineering. © 2005 IEEE.
