Many researchers have been interested in approximation properties of fuzzy logic systems (FLS), which like neural networks, can be seen as approximation schemes. Almost all of them tackled Mamdani fuzzy model, which was shown to have many interesting features. This paper aims to present an alternative for traditional inference mechanisms and CRI method. The most attractive advantage of this new method is its higher robustness with respect to changes in rule base and ability to operate when latter is sparse. In this paper interpolation with high order polynomials and /spl beta/-function is reported.

In this paper, we focus on the issue of adaptive H ∞ -control design for a class of linear parameter-varying (LPV) systems based on the Hamiltonian-Jacobi-Isaac (HJI) method. By combining the idea of polynomially parameter-dependent quadratic functions and vector projection method to derive an adaptive H ∞ -control, sufficient conditions with high precision are given to guarantee both robust asymptotic stability and disturbance attenuation of the LPV systems with unknown constant parameters. The applicability of the proposed design method is illustrated on a simple example.

software measurement programs can help organizations make better decisions regarding their software projects. However, creating and establishing software measurement programs can be both costly and difficult. This paper addresses the problem by focusing on reusability of metrics for software measurement programs through the identification of measurement patterns. We illustrate our work with identifying measurement patterns by providing an extensive and detailed measurement example that is broken down into interdependent building blocks and activities.

Reservation in advance provides a solution for the need of reserving the network resource for future. Advance reservation for global grids becomes an important research area as it allows users to gain concurrent access for their applications to be executed in parallel, and guarantees the availability of resources at specified future times. But performance of reservation for grid was seldom considered. In this paper, an adaptive advance reservation is introduced. It can modify not only the parameters of latest request but also that of admitted requests because sometimes the latest request is fixed with parameters. Particular admission control algorithm for this new type of reservation is provided too. Simulation shows that it can improve performance of resource reservation in terms of both call acceptance rate and resource utilization when the percentage of fixed requests is not very high.

We propose a low complexity frequency diversity technique for OFDM to improve its error performance in a frequency-selective wireless channel. Recently, linear precoding has been proposed to achieve frequency diversity (multipath diversity) in OFDM, which overcomes the problem of channel nulls (deep fades in frequency-domain). However, currently reported precoding techniques for OFDM have high computational complexity due to associated maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding or pseudo-inverse of large matrices (linear decoding). In the proposed diversity enhanced-OFDM (DE-OFDM), the decoding complexity is minimal as maximum ratio combining (MRC) is incorporated at the receiver to generate a decision variable for each repeatedly transmitted symbol over multiple subcarriers. Moreover, we show that DE-OFDM does not cause any effective data rate (throughput) loss as DE-OFDM using a higher-order modulation scheme (thus the same data rate as conventional OFDM) can provide a better error performance. Both analytical and simulation results are provided to demonstrate the efficiency of DE-OFDM in achieving frequency diversity benefit with low receiver complexity in multipath (frequency-selective) channels. DE-OFDM also outperforms the previously proposed ICI self-cancellation schemes in a frequency-selective fading channel with small frequency offset error.

Distributed systems commonly replicate data to enhance system dependability. In such systems, a logical update on a data item results in a physical update on a number of copies. The synchronization and communication required to keep the copies of replicated data consistent introduces a delay when operations are performed. In time-constrained systems or systems distributed over a bandwidth-constrained area, such operational delays generally prove unacceptable. Asynchronous data replication is commonly used to mitigate these delays. We look to develop a general solution for the introduction of an adaptive data replication scheduler to optimize asynchronous replications based on a user-developed priority model in overloaded situations. The solution uses a multi-layer perceptron neural network to mimic the behavior of a historically optimal scheduler through functional approximation with its evaluation through simulation.

A theme-based spiral curriculum approach is being adopted to initiate the department-level reform (DLR) of the freshman engineering and the bioprocess engineering curricula at Virginia Tech. A large number of engineering faculty members are collaborating with experts in educational psychology and academic assessment to accomplish the objectives of this 3-year NSF supported project that began in September 2004. Successful implementation of the spiral approach will be used as a model for incorporating similar reforms in other engineering departments and elsewhere. © 2005 IEEE.

Given a plant system and a desired system, we study conditions for which there exists a controller that interconnected with the plant, yields a system that is bisimilar to the desired system. Some sufficient and some necessary conditions are provided in the general case of (non-deterministic) abstract state systems and stronger results are obtained for the special classes of autonomous abstract state systems, finite abstract state systems, and non-deterministic linear dynamical systems.

Autonomic Computing (AC), self-management based on high level guidance from humans, is increasingly gaining momentum as the way forward in designing reliable systems to hide complexity and conquer IT management costs. Effectively, AC may be viewed as Policy-Based Self-Management. In this paper we look at the motivation for utilizing NASA requirements-based programming technologies for mechanically transforming policies (expressed in restricted natural language, or appropriate graphical notations) into a provably equivalent formal model that can be used as the basis for code generation and other transformations, with the goal of self-generation of provable autonomic policies. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2005.

This paper describes a design for adaptive control of transverse flux permanent magnet machines as nonlinear systems with unknown nonlinearities by utilizing Takagi-Sugeno-Kang type neuro-fuzzy networks. The technique of feedback linearization and H infin control are used to design the adaptive control law for compensating the unknown nonlinear parts, such the effect of cogging torque, as a disturbance on the rotor angle and angular velocity tracking performances. Finally, the capability of the proposed method is shown by the simulation results
