In this paper a novel sensorless adaptive neurofuzzy speed controller for induction motor derives is formulated. An artificial neural network (ANN) is adopted to estimate the motor speed and thus provide a sensorless speed estimator system. The performance of the proposed adaptive neurofuzzy speed controller is evaluated for a wide range of operating conditions for induction motor. These include startup, step changes in reference speed, unknown load torque and parameters variations. Obtained results show that the proposed ANN provides a very satisfactory speed estimation under the above mentioned operation conditions and also the sensorless adaptive neurofuzzy speed controller can achieve very robust and satisfactory performance and could be used to get the desired performance levels. The response time is also very fast despite the fact that the control strategy is based on bounded rationality.

The purpose of this paper is to design a high performance sliding mode controller through the use of a new switching function. This method uses the idea of boundary layer sliding mode while taking the boundary layer width as a function of the angle between the state trajectory and the sliding surface which we call approach angle. By incorporating the approach angle into the switching function, the overall sliding mode controller guarantees the asymptotical stability of the system while having only a slight amount of chattering. This method overcomes the shortcomings of a pure discontinuous switching such as excessive chattering, while maintaining its benefit that is the asymptotical stability is guaranteed. The proposed method is used to control an inverted pendulum. It is also compared with a pure switching function. Simulation results show that the new sliding mode controller has good control performance with negligible chattering.

A global power system transient stabilizer and voltage regulator based on a simple neuron structure is proposed in this paper. Two independent controllers i.e. transient controller and voltage regulator are designed. To this end, a simple structure controller that consists of only one neuron is used. The proposed neuro-controller does not need any offline training and the parameters can be determined on-line. To achieve the global control action that guarantees both transient stability and voltage regulation, we used a membership function that was a function of measurable parameters of the system. The proposed global control law acts in a manner in which in the transient period, the transient stabilizer is the dominant controller and in the post transient period, the voltage controller is the dominant one. The effectiveness of the proposed global control action is demonstrated through some computer simulations on a single machine infinite-bus (SMIB) power system.

A robust active queue management system is designed to secure high utilization, bounded delay and loss, while the network complies with the demands each traffic class sets. To this end, we use the H/sub /spl infin// control theory. Simulation results of the proposed control action demonstrate the effectiveness of the controller in providing robust queue management system.

This paper provides a model predictive approach to control switched reluctance motors (SRM's). A local linear neuro-fuzzy model is used to model SRM. Then a predictive control schema is devised considering an appropriate energy term in the optimization phase. Commutation occurs naturally as an outcome of the predictive control design process, not as an extra step added to the control policy. From a computational view point, we use locally linear model predictive control that with a quadratic cost and linear constraints reduces to a simple quadratic program, which can be solved very fast in a closed form. Simulation studies justify applicability of our proposed method to SRM applications.

In this paper, we propose an atlas-based method for hippocampus-amygdala complex segmentation. An atlas is registered on all subjects and its transformation is calculated for each subject. This transformation is applied to the structural segmentation of the complex in atlas to construct an initial surface for the hippocampus-amygdala complex of each subject. A possibility approach is introduced for the segmentation process. Two different kinds of deformation based on edges and information obtained from tissue segmentation are used to find different parts of the complex. A new energy is defined to use tissue information. This energy is adopted to expand the model to embed dominant gray matter points in the volume and also withdraw from dominant white matter and CSF points. The initial shape is divided into several parts. In the normal direction of the center of each part, we construct a profile which search for the best poult that maximizes this new energy. This algorithm is reliable for finding the overall shape of the complex. It overcomes the poor features of the complex such as weak edges and noise. The algorithm is examined on 5 different subjects and validated using two different validation methods. © 2004 IEEE.

In this paper we present a generalized authorization model for multimedia digital libraries. Our aim is to support the enforcement of access control requirements of the original data sources without the need to create a new, unified model for the digital library. We integrate the three most widely used access control models (i.e., mandatory, discretionary, and role-based) within a single framework, allowing seamless accesses to data protected by these security models. In particular, we address the access control needs of continuous media data while supporting quality of service (QoS) requirements and preserving operational semantics. The technical core of the paper focuses on the development of metadata and the corresponding metastructure to represent authorization policies and QoS requirements and shows their applicabilty to continuous media. We define our security objects based on the Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL), which controls multimedia presentations. Following the synchronization constructs 〈par〉 and 〈seq〉 of SMIL, we define a normal form for multimedia streams, called SMIL normal form. SMIL normal form provides a syntax-independent representation of semantically equivalent multimedia data. SMIL normal form compositions are extended (decorated) with RDF statements, representing security and QoS metadata. Interpretation of these statements and, therefore, the authorization and QoS requirements of the decorated multimedia object are defined by the metastructure, represented as a DAML+OIL ontology. We propose the concept of generalized subject that encompasses all access permissions of a given user regardless of the multiple permissions in different access control models. Finally, we develop methods to generate secure views for each generalized subject and retrieve them using a secure multimedia server. © Springer-Verlag 2004.

Analysis of allographs (characters) and allograph combinations (words) is the key for the identification/verification of a writer's handwriting. While allographs are usually part of words and the segmentation of a word into allographs is a subjective process, analysis of handwritten words is a natural option, complementary to allograph and document-level analysis. We consider four different types of features obtained using both segmentation-based and segmentation-free approaches: (i) GSC (gradient, structural and concavity) features that are extracted from the cells of a grid superimposed on the word image (ii) WMR (word model recognizer) features, extracted from the cells of superimposed grids on the segmented characters (iii) SC (shape curvature) features that describe characters by the distribution of curvature values on their contours and (iv) SCON (shape context) features that measure the similarity between character contour shapes. Their individual and accumulated performance is evaluated for the writer identification and verification tasks on over 75000 words images, written by more than 1000 writers. Experimental results show that handwritten words are very effective in discriminating handwriting and that both segmentation-free and segmentation-based approaches are valid.

A new tracking algorithm, based on the maximum likelihood (ML) algorithm for time-varying flat fading multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels, is introduced. The maximum likelihood algorithm is optimum with known channel model assumptions. The performance and tracking behavior of the proposed algorithm is justified via various simulations for a first-order time-varying MIMO channel, and it is shown that this algorithm is applicable, even for moderately fast Rayleigh fading MIMO channels.
