Based on the advances of research in cognitive informatics and related fields, this paper attempts to develop a layered reference model of the brain that explains the functional mechanisms and cognitive processes of the natural intelligence. A variety of life functions and cognitive processes have been identified in cognitive informatics, cognitive science, neuropsychology, and neurophilosophy. In order to formally and rigorously describe a comprehensive and coherent set of mental processes and their relationships, an integrated reference model of the brain is established, which encompasses 37 cognitive processes at six layers known as the sensation, memory, perception, action, meta and higher cognitive layers from bottom up. The reference model of the brain may be applied to explain a wide range of physiological, psychological, and cognitive phenomena in cognitive informatics, particularly relationships between the inherited and the acquired life functions, as well as the subconscious and conscious cognitive processes.

Sliding mode control applied to motion control of linear structural systems under earthquake excitation

For dynamical systems expressed in state-space form or for systems with non-classical damping, the reduction of the structural model into the modal co-ordinates involves complex modal analysis with complex modal co-ordinates. In this paper, application of sliding mode control for vibration control of a linear structural system under earthquake excitation is investigated. The proposed controller is applied to a three-storey building structure and the motion of the floors under El-Centro earthquake is investigated. Simulation results show that using the proposed sliding mode controller the displacement of the floors is decreased significantly. This controller can be similarly applied for higher order building.

A number of empirical studies using students as subjects has been carried out in the last few years. These studies are usually conducted as pilot experiments that allow researchers to fine-tune an experiment before deploying it in an industrial environment. Though one of the issues usually taken into account with these experiments is their external validity, other issues need to be considered, such as the usefulness of these experiments in the context of a software engineering course. This chapter concisely reports on three empirical studies performed at the Università degli Studi dell'Insubria during the ESERNET project and two other empirical studies that we carried out previously, all with students as subjects, so as to provide the context for a discussion on the research and the educational goals that should be taken into account when carrying out an experiment with students to make it successful from both an empirical and an educational viewpoint. Finally, we provide some advice on how to carry out empirical studies with students based on our experiences. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

A GUI software development system for digital AV applications

The scale of software on digital AV appliances that handle large-volume multichannel digital data has been increased by the GUIs (graphical user interfaces) loaded on them in recent years. In addition, the GUIs of AV appliances use remote controls having cursor keys. Focus management must be performed by these to point to the object of operation, in contrast to the mouse, which is capable of pointing on the entire screen. Since focus management changes with changes in the specifications of GUIs, such as screen layouts and the like, software may not be reusable. In this paper, a development system that attempts to improve the productivity of GUI software requiring focus management is discussed from the points of view of (1) a software design model based on an object-oriented MVC model, (2) an execution model with good efficiency corresponding to the design model, (3) development tools performing synthesis of GUI software and automatic generation of focus management procedures, and (4) applications and evaluations of the system. In an example of the application of the system, software productivity with a GUI specification change was improved by a factor of three. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Efficient star query processing is crucial for a performant data warehouse (DW) implementation and much work is available on physical optimization (e.g., indexing and schema design) and logical optimization (e.g., pre-aggregated materialized views with query rewriting). One important step in the query processing phase is, however, still a bottleneck: the residual join of results from the fact table with the dimension tables in combination with grouping and aggregation. This phase typically consumes between 50% and 80% of the overall processing time. In typical DW scenarios pre-grouping methods only have a limited effect as the grouping is usually specified on the hierarchy levels of the dimension tables and not on the fact table itself. We suggest a combination of hierarchical clustering and pre-grouping as we have implemented in the relational DBMS Transbase. Exploiting hierarchy semantics for the pre-grouping of fact table result tuples is several times faster than conventional query processing. The reason for this is that hierarchical pre-grouping reduces the number of join operations significantly. With this method even queries covering a large part of the fact table can be executed within a time span acceptable for interactive query processing.

A transcutaneous bone digitizer for minimally invasive registration in orthopedics: A real-time focused ultrasound beam approach

computer-guided navigation of surgical tool position in computer-assisted orthopedic systems requires the registration of computer tomographic (CT) images with underlying bone. This process is presently performed by manually digitizing points on bone with a pointer and aligning them to a preoperative CT scan. We propose the use of ultrasound to obtain points on bone transcutaneously. A custom-made A-mode probe features a modular lens focusing system and a one-step calibration method. A stable and precise echo detection algorithm is also implemented. The accuracies of three signal detection algorithms standard deviation, cross-correlation (XCORR) and short-time Fourier transform were compared using a known reflected signal. XCORR showed the most accurate and stable operation. To test our method of obtaining bone surface points, a plastic model of the fourth human lumbar vertebra was CT scanned and then immersed in a water bath. Six surface registrations of the vertebra using an accurate pointing device were compared to ten registrations obtained using the US probe (using the XCORR algorithm). Student's T-test showed no significant difference in error between the two methods, proving that ultrasound registration, using our method, is equivalent to the more conventional pointer method. © 2003 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved.

This paper focuses on credit card fraud in Multimedia Products, which are soft-products. By soft-products, we mean intangible products that can be used and consumed without having them shipped physically, such as software, music and calling cards (calling time). The demand for soft-products, mainly Multimedia Products, on the Internet has grown in the last few years and is rapidly increasing. Credit card fraudulent transactions on such products are very easy to conduct, while very difficult to recover, compared to the fraud cases in hard-products transactions. This paper classifies the types of products sold on the Internet, and the usual fraud occurred in each type. It summarizes some of the existing best practices to prevent credit card fraud. Finally, it introduces the use of a Trusted Email as a way to authenticate the customer and to simulate his/her physical address (since on these products no actual shipping will happen). © 2002, Kluwer Academic Publishers.

The aim is to improve the monitoring and control of district heating systems through the use of agent technology. In order to increase the knowledge about the current and future state in a district heating system at the producer side, each substation is equipped with an agent that makes predictions of future consumption and monitors current consumption. The contributions to the consumers, will be higher quality of service, e.g., better ways to deal with major shortages of heat water, which is facilitated by the introduction of redistribution agents, and lower costs since less energy is needed for the heat production. Current substations are purely reactive devices and have no communication capabilities. Thus, they are restricted to making local decisions without taking into account the global situation. However, a new type of "open" substation has been developed which makes the suggested agent-based approach possible. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

The paper presents and elaborates on an automatic method for creating initial domain model using part of the knowledge contained in ontologies. It describes the method of how the initial domain model expressed in Unified Modeling Language (UML) can be obtained in an automated way from ontologies encoded in DAML+OIL. The solution is presented in the context of Unified software Development Process, which uses UML as a modelling language. The elements necessary for construction of domain models are identified;a procedure for finding them in DAML+OIL encoded ontologies is described followed by suggestions for incorporation of the automatic domain model construction into software development process. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002

This paper is based on a workshop held at the University of Southern California center for software engineering in March, 2002. The components of the Capability Maturity Model IntegrationSM (CMMISM) Systems engineering/ software engineering/Integrated Product and Process Model1 are evaluated for their support of agile methods.
