This work considers the problem of intercepting rogue drones targeting sensitive critical infrastructure facilities. While current interception technologies focus mainly on the jamming/spoofing tasks, the challenges of effectively locating and tracking rogue drones have not received adequate attention. Solving this problem and integrating with recently proposed interception techniques will enable a holistic system that can reliably detect, track, and neutralize rogue drones. Specifically, this work considers a team of pursuer UAVs that can search, detect, and track multiple rogue drones over a sensitive facility. The joint search and track problem is addressed through a novel multiagent reinforcement learning scheme to optimize the agent mobility control actions that maximize the number of rogue drones detected and tracked. The performance of the proposed system is investigated under realistic settings through extensive simulation experiments with varying number of agents demonstrating both its performance and scalability.

Modern real-time systems are susceptible to cyber-attacks. The growing adoption of multi-core platforms, where safety and non-safety critical tasks coexist, further introduces new security challenges. Existing solutions suffer from either a lack of determinism or excessive cost. This paper addresses these shortcomings and proposes an offline analysis to compute all feasible schedules for real-time tasks running on a multi-core platform, isolating compromised tasks while guaranteeing a fail-operational system and low-cost reconfigurable scheduling. Our experimental results using a UAV autopilot system on a quad-core platform (Raspberry Pi) demonstrate that the proposed scheme incurs run-time recovery overhead at the level of microseconds. Also, the reconfiguration process covers up to 100% of all possible responses for compromised tasks in the synthetic test cases.

The safe and effective computer control of different types of autonomous vehicles is becoming an increasingly important task in modern Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and in future transportation solutions of the Smart Cities. Paper discusses the linearized mechanical model and Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) control mathematics of a Self-Driving Car (SDC) of 1200 kg weight class. We demonstrate in the Simulink/MATLAB environment the applicability of this cost functions based advanced optimized control approach for reliable performing of a two-step obstacle avoidance maneuver. Study is related to improvement of control algorithms of a real autonomous shuttle ISEAUTO operating in the campus of Tallinn University of Technology. © 2022 IEEE.

Agile software development methods are widely used by software organisations, focusing on short developmental life cycles and customer satisfaction through the iterative and incremental development of software products. Despite their popularity, these methods present risks that may be underappreciated. This paper examines certain risks attributed to agile software development, with a focus on the lack of documentation, scope creep, technical debt and job satisfaction. Through the application of a multivocal literature review, we find that agile software development can greatly benefit projects. However, when agile methods are implemented inappropriately or sub-optimally, projects risk over-spending, delayed or defective software, employee turnover, and overall decreased productivity. Understanding the risks associated with agile software development can help practitioners to achieve higher efficiency and success in their software development projects. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Serverless computing is on the rise but developing software to exploit this space involves a deep rethink of software architecture, deployment, and operation (perhaps also, software development processes and team structures). Central to this revolution, we find a compelling argument for distributed, services-based software architectures. But converting a large, established monolith architecture system to microservices is non-trivial and fraught with both cost and risk. For the many firms with established software systems, this architectural system conversion might be considered the first stop-off on the journey to serverless computing. In tandem, software deployment and production monitoring also require reinvention. The focus of this paper involves an examination of the advantages of microservices architectures, include techniques for migrating from monolith architectures. Through application of a Multivocal Literature Review (MLR), we find that migrating from a monolith architecture to a microservices architecture is risky and non-trivial, but that there are techniques that can be employed to support the transition. We find also that monoliths have their advantages which might be overlooked to some extent in the race to serverless computing. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Robust rateless space time block coding for mmWave massive MIMO system

In the vast growing wireless communication system creating robust encoding mechanisms using space-time block codes (STBC) for mmWave massive MIMO to overcome uncertainty and ensure reliability is a critical concept to be covered. This article reviews the core concepts behind MIMO communication, Massive MIMO communication, space-time block codes, and rateless codes in the context of wireless communication systems. Building on the foundational concepts of information theory and mmWave massive MIMO, we developed space-time block codes that maintain orthogonality for real-valued symbols. Following a thorough analysis of these codes, we successfully extended them into rateless orthogonal space-time block codes (ROSTBC) for massive MIMO. This extension enables the codes to adapt their rates dynamically based on the unknown channel conditions at the transmitter. The research work was concluded by comparing static G4 encoded Tarokah work and other Orthogonal Space Time Block Codes (OSTBCs) with Rateless Space Time Block Codes (ROSTBCs). The results show that as the number of blocks used to encode the message in Rateless Space Time Block Code (ROSTBC) increases, this coding scheme can outperform static Rateless Space Time Block Codes (OSTBC) in very low SNR values by a minimum of 8.5 %. This work can enhance wireless communication by creating reliable communication over inherently unreliable systems. © 2024 The Authors

This paper investigates the technology for selecting communication scheme based on the amount of traffic in LTE-M (Marine) and 5G communication environments. Recently, it has been possible to use LTE-M and 5G communications for preventing collisions between ships and obstacles in coastal areas, moving from a focus on terrestrial users. This paper proposes a scheme for efficiently handling both small-scale and large-volume traffic generated from terminals on ships. LTE-M can accommodate more terminals by utilizing the wide coverage of coastal areas, but it can be vulnerable to high-volume video processing for real-time obstacle detection. 5G provides a high data transmission rate and low latency, making it suitable for large data exchanges between ships or real-time services, but its short coverage makes it unsuitable for accommodating a wide area. Therefore, this paper proposes a scheme for dynamically selecting LTE-M or 5G communication schemes according to the amount of data generated by terminals on ships, to transmit data. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to decide which communication scheme, LTE-M or 5G, should be chosen based on the amount and type of traffic. The algorithm dynamically selects the optimal communication scheme considering real-time traffic information and network status. By implementing a simulation environment for coastal areas using the technique proposed in this paper, we compare the scheme where terminals installed on ships selectively use LTE-M and 5G communication schemes with the scheme where two communication schemes are chosen randomly for transmission. The simulation results confirm that the proposed technique can process more data compared to the existing schemes. Copyright 2023 KICS.

Traditional visual-inertial SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) systems predominantly rely on feature point matching from a single robot to realize the robot pose estimation and environment map construction. However, in complex scenarios, these traditional systems struggle with issues such as tracking failures due to illumination changes, rapid movements, and low-texture environments, and they perform poorly in terms of mapping efficiency and global consistency. To address these challenges, we propose a centralized collaborative SLAM system that employs both point and line features for tracking in the robot and map fusion in the cloud. The proposed system leverages the fusion of point and line features across all instances in the process, which allows our method to achieve higher localization accuracy in structured, low-texture scenes. With the aid of classifying gravity-aligned vertical lines and spatial parallel lines, the proposed system can deliver faster and more accurate odometry in complex scenes. Furthermore, we developed intra-robot and inter-robot loop closure detection methods based on point and line features, generating a globally consistent sparse point cloud and structured scene map in the cloud. Our method is able to build richer maps while improving accuracy compared to existing methods. Experimental results on public datasets and in real-world environments show that, compared to existing advanced methods, our approach demonstrates better performance. © 2014 IEEE.

Medical errors contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality, emphasizing the critical role of Clinical Guidelines (GLs) in patient care. Automating GL application can enhance GL adherence, improve patient outcomes, and reduce costs. However, several barriers exist to GL implementation and real-time automated support. Challenges include creating a formalized, machine-comprehensible GL representation, and an episodic decision-support system for sporadic treatment advice. This system must accommodate the non-continuous nature of care delivery, including partial actions or partially met treatment goals. We describe the design and implementation of an episodic GL-based clinical decision support system and its retrospective technical evaluation using patient records from a geriatric center. Initial evaluation scores of the e-Picard system were promising, with a mean 94% correctness and 90% completeness based on 50 random pressure ulcer patients. Errors were mainly due to knowledge specification, algorithmic issues, and missing data. Post-corrections, scores improved to 100% correctness and a mean 97% completeness, with missing data still affecting completeness. The results validate the system's capability to assess guideline adherence and provide quality recommendations. Despite initial limitations, we have demonstrated the feasibility of providing, through the e-Picard episodic algorithm, realistic medical decision-making support for noncontinuous, intermittent consultations. © 2024 The Authors.

With the growing complexity of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and the integration of Internet of Things (IoT), the use of sensors for online monitoring generates large volume of multivariate time series (MTS) data. Consequently, the need for robust anomaly diagnosis in MTS is paramount to maintaining system reliability and safety. While significant advancements have been made in anomaly detection, localization remains a largely underexplored area, though crucial for intelligent decisionmaking. This paper introduces a novel transformer-based model for unsupervised anomaly diagnosis in MTS, with a focus on improving localization performance, through an in-depth analysis of the self-attention mechanism's learning behavior under both normal and anomalous conditions. We formulate the anomaly localization problem as a three-stage process: time-step, window, and segment-based. This leads to the development of the SpaceTime Anomaly Score (STAS), a new metric inspired by the connection between transformer latent representations and spacetime statistical models. STAS is designed to capture individual anomaly behaviors and inter-series dependencies, delivering enhanced localization performance. Additionally, the Statistical Feature Anomaly Score (SFAS) complements STAS by analyzing statistical features around anomalies, with their combination helping to reduce false alarms. Experiments on real world and synthetic datasets illustrate the model's superiority over state-of-the-art methods in both detection and localization tasks.
