Accurately estimating wildfire propagation is pivotal for effective firefighting strategies and informed decision-making. This paper introduces a novel solution that harnesses an autonomous uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) agent with advanced sensing capabilities in conjunction with a wildfire spread model and the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) to enhance wildfire propagation estimations. By strategically guiding the UAV to specific areas ahead of the fire, it collects real-time data on fuel types and weather conditions, which are fused with available historical data to improve accuracy. The updated data are then utilized by the wildfire spread model and EnKF to provide estimations of wildfire propagation, which further improves the UAV path planning. The performance of the proposed solution is demonstrated in a simulated environment, highlighting its ability to enhance wildfire propagation estimation and improve the fire’s current perimeter state estimation.

Distinguishing the manifestations of pulmonary nodules poses a significant challenge in the medical field, demanding the expertise of experienced radiologists. This complexity results in the high cost and inadequacy of sample labeling. In response, this study introduces a reinforcement learning approach, denoted as TriCaps-RL, for the classification of pulmonary nodules based on CT signs. This approach initially employs the Q-value loss to train a single CapsNet. When the performance of the CapsNet plateaus and further enhancement becomes challenging, the loss function is progressively replaced by a triplet metric to augment performance. Consequently, a more nuanced differentiation among various types of pulmonary nodules is achieved. The proposed method can improve its performance through interactions with radiologists during their CT image reading process, thereby mitigating the shortage of radiologists and addressing the time-consuming issue of training sample labeling in medical image research. This paper delves into the fine-grained classification of pulmonary nodules using deep reinforcement learning based on CT imaging signs. In comparison to previous studies that primarily concentrate on the benign/malignant classification of lung nodules, this fine-grained classification of nodules founded on CT imaging signs proves to be more valuable for medical practitioners in making accurate diagnostic decisions. © 2024, Taiwan Ubiquitous Information CO LTD. In the evolving landscape of cloud computing, federated cloud infrastructures present unique challenges and opportunities for resource and application monitoring. Monitoring the diverse array of cloud resources and applications within a federated cloud environment is crucial for delivering consistent Quality of Service (QoS) and continuous oversight across various cloud applications and infrastructure. Despite the various successes documented in the literature on multi-cloud monitoring, existing frameworks have not fully explored or provided enough insights into centralized monitoring of resources, applications, and network devices in a federated cloud environment. This paper introduces FedMonitor, an implementation architecture designed to enhance the monitoring and notification capabilities in federated cloud environments by building on the theoretical ideals in our earlier work (i.e. FEDARGOS-V1). FedMonitor leverages Prometheus and Grafana to crawl, manage and visualize metrics from diverse software services, hardware resources, and network devices within a federated cloud environment. The results demonstrate hat FedMonitor improves the effectiveness of resource and application monitoring in federated cloud environments. © 2024 IEEE.

Although U-Net and its variants have achieved some great successes in medical image segmentation tasks, their segmentation performances for small objects are still unsatisfactory. Therefore, in this work, a new deep model, co-Net, is proposed to achieve more accurate medical image segmentations. The advancements of co-Net are mainly threefold: First, it incorporates an additional expansive path into U-Net to import an extra supervision signal and obtain a more effective and robust image segmentation by dual supervision. Then, a multi-dimensional self-attention mechanism is further developed to highlight salient features and suppress irrelevant ones consecutively in both spatial and channel dimensions. Finally, to reduce semantic disparity between the feature maps of the contracting and expansive paths, we further propose to integrate diversely-connected multi-scale convolution blocks into the skip connections, where several multi-scale convolutional operations are connected in both series and parallel. Extensive experimental results on three abdominal CT segmentation tasks show that (i) co-Net greatly outperforms the state-of-the-art image segmentation methods in medical image segmentation tasks;(ii) the proposed three advancements are all effective and essential for co-Net to achieve the superior performances;and (iii) the proposed multi-dimensional self-attention (resp., diversely-connected multi scale convolution) is more effective than the state-of-the-art attention mechanisms (resp., multi-scale solutions) for medical image segmentations. In recent years, Silicon Dangling Bond (SiDB) logic has emerged as a promising beyond-CMOS technology. Unlike conventional circuit technology, where logic is realized through transistors, SiDB logic utilizes quantum dots with variable charge states. By strategically arranging these dots, logic functions can be constructed. However, determining such arrangements is a tremendously complex task. Because of that, the automatic obtainment of SiDB logic implementations is inefficient. To address this challenge, we propose an idea to speed up the design process by utilizing dedicated search space pruning strategies. Initial results show that the combined pruning techniques yield 1) a drastic reduction of the search space, and 2) a corresponding reduction in runtime by up to a factor of 33.

Revisiting Kernel Attention with Correlated Gaussian Process Representation

Transformers have increasingly become the de facto method to model sequential data with state-of-the-art performance. Due to its widespread use, being able to estimate and calibrate its modeling uncertainty is important to understand and design robust transformer models. To achieve this, previous works have used Gaussian processes (GPs) to perform uncertainty calibration for the attention units of transformers and attained notable successes. However, such approaches have to confine the transformers to the space of symmetric attention to ensure the necessary symmetric requirement of their GP’s kernel specification, which reduces the representation capacity of the model. To mitigate this restriction, we propose the Correlated Gaussian Process Transformer (CGPT), a new class of transformers whose self-attention units are modeled as cross-covariance between two correlated GPs (CGPs). This allows asymmetries in attention and can enhance the representation capacity of GP-based transformers. We also derive a sparse approximation for CGP to make it scale better. Our empirical studies show that both CGP-based and sparse CGP-based transformers achieve better performance than state-of-the-art GP-based transformers on a variety of benchmark tasks. Lip-reading is to utilize the visual information of the speaker's lip movements to recognize words and sentences. Existing event-based lip-reading solutions integrate different frame rate branches to learn spatio-temporal features of varying granularities. However, aggregating events into event frames inevitably leads to the loss of fine-grained temporal information within frames. To remedy this drawback, we propose a novel framework termed Multi-view Temporal Granularity aligned Aggregation (MTGA). Specifically, we first present a novel event representation method, namely time-segmented voxel graph list, where the most significant local voxels are temporally connected into a graph list. Then we design a spatio-temporal fusion module based on temporal granularity alignment, where the global spatial features extracted from event frames, together with the local relative spatial and temporal features contained in voxel graph list are effectively aligned and integrated. Finally, we design a temporal aggregation module that incorporates positional encoding, which enables the capture of local absolute spatial and global temporal information. Fog computing is an emerging paradigm that supplies storage, computation, and networking resources between traditional cloud data centers and end devices. This article focuses on the resource provisioning problem in collaborative fog computing for multiple delay-sensitive users. Our goal is to implement a resource provisioning strategy for network operators to minimize the total monetary cost by considering the deadline and capacity constraints. Two scenarios are considered: unlimited-processor fog nodes (UPFN) and limited-processor fog nodes (LPFN). In either scenario, we prove that the resource provisioning problem is NP-hard. First, we consider the UPFN scenario that the processors of fog nodes are unlimited and users' requests can be ideally processed in parallel. Two algorithms are proposed which greedily delete fog nodes based on the local or global collaborative influences until there is no feasible provisioning to guarantee the deadline of users. Then we extend the resource provisioning problem to a more realistic and complicated scenario LPFN in which the scheduling delay cannot be ignored. Two types of tasks are considered. One is the arbitrarily divided tasks, and a near-optimal solution bounded by (Formula presented.) has been found. m is the number of fog nodes, and (Formula presented.) is the upper bound on the Lipschitz constant of the delay function. Another one is the application-driven tasks, and we propose a heuristic algorithm. Extensive experiments validate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms. © 2021 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

News story segmentation is a challenging task mainly due to the dynamic range of topics, smooth story transitions, and varied duration of each story. This paper presents a technique to segment stories from Urdu news bulletins. The technique relies on a Long Short-Term Memory-based Siamese neural network that is trained on positive (belonging to the same story) and negative (belonging to different stories) pairs of sentences. The model, once trained, identifies the transition between stories by detecting the dissimilarity between the adjacent sentences of a given text. For algorithmic development and experimental study, we employ two datasets, a dataset of Urdu news as well as transcriptions of news bulletins from multiple news channels. This paper emphasizes the significance of implementing an effective control system to enhance the performance of a three-stage DC–DC buck converter (TDDC). Herein, we present the development of an observer controller (OC) for TDDC, where average modeling of the DC–DC converter was employed alongside an observer algorithm for the OC. The primary focus is on the adoption of an observation topology aimed at enhancing system responsiveness under various conditions, including variable input voltages, reference voltage changes, load fluctuations, integration with photovoltaics, and battery charging. This approach ensures improved stability and performance, addressing the dynamic challenges inherent in such systems. A comparative analysis was conducted on two distinct control topologies for the proposed TDDC system, namely proportional–integral (PI) and advanced OC. Simulink software was used to model and simulate the proposed system. The results demonstrate lower rising and settling times of the TDDC for the OC and PI implementations, respectively. Additionally, the system with the OC eliminates 20% of the overshoot, while the system with OC minimizes the output voltage oscillations from 13% to 2% compared to the PI system. The OC was integrated into the TDDC to enhance system stability and improve the control loops, particularly the third loop. These improvements make the TDDC with OC suitable for application to renewable energy systems, microgrids, telecommunication networks, and electric vehicles, where precise control and stability are essential.
