System inertia directly affects the power system‘ $s$ frequency response when an active power imbalance between generation and demand occurs. Therefore, determining the inertia level is becoming crucial to the system operators to ensure the secure and stable operation of a power system. This paper presents a method for estimating the total inertia of a generation bus considering only frequency and active power measurements recorded by Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs). The method allows online inertia monitoring utilizing ambient data, while a disturbance is not required to provide sufficient excitation to the system for accurate estimation. The Least Squares (LS) method is applied for parameter estimation to extract the inertia values from the identified models. Three different models have been studied to approximate the system's ambient response and extract the value of the inertia constant. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated using actual measurements obtained from two substations of the Cyprus power system.

Proportional integral derivative controller is commonly used to control devices, which is a transfer function consisting of three parameters which are: Proportional Gain (kp), Integral Gain (ki) and Derivative Gain (kd). The problem of the PID controller is that the gains (kp, ki and kd) must be chosen carefully in order to get better performance. In this paper, Particle swarm optimization (PSO) applies to obtain these gains. PID controller applies to Automatic Voltage Regulator in this paper. Furthermore, this paper presents simulation results that are used for comparing the proposed gains of PID controller and base system gains based on performance criteria in the time domain (Transient Analysis), including the overshoot, rise time, settling time, and steadystate error. In addition, this paper presents a simulation for the terminal voltage response to show the efficiency of the PSO method compared with the Genetic Algorithm (GA) method and the simulated Annealing (SA) method.

We study quantum hypothesis testing between orthogonal states under restricted local measurements in the many-copy scenario. For testing arbitrary multipartite entangled pure state against its orthogonal complement state via the local operation and classical communication (LOCC) operation, we prove that the optimal average error probability always decays exponentially in the number of copies. Second, we provide a sufficient condition for the LOCC operations to achieve the same performance as the positive-partial-transpose (PPT) operations. We further show that testing a maximally entangled state against its orthogonal complement and testing extremal Werner states both fulfill the above-mentioned condition. Hence, we determine the explicit expressions for the optimal average error probability, the optimal trade-off between the type-I and type-II errors, and the associated Chernoff, Stein, Hoeffding, and strong converse exponents. Then, we show an infinite asymptotic separation between the separable (SEP) and PPT operations by providing a pair of states constructed from an unextendible product basis (UPB). The quantum states can be distinguished perfectly by PPT operations, while the optimal error probability, with SEP operations, admits an exponential lower bound. On the technical side, we prove this result by providing a quantitative version of the well-known statement that the tensor product of UPBs is a UPB. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

Electromagnetic phenomena, especially those in the Very Low Frequency/Low Frequency (VLF/LF) bands are promising for short-term earthquake prediction. Seismo-ionospheric perturbations cause a variety of changes in different receiver-transmitter VLF/LF signal paths. Therefore, independent and simultaneous observations at different points thus in different VLF/LF signal propagation paths are necessary to better predict the earthquake. Most of the previous research on VLF data have been based on one path or limited number of paths which examined perturbations in the time domain and less attention has been paid to estimate the location of the earthquake. In the present research, using wavelet analysis, the temporal variations of seismo-ionospheric perturbations and the approximate time of earthquake are predicted. Clear disturbances are observed two weeks before the Kumamoto earthquake happened in Japan in 2016. The novelty of this study is to present an approach called Intersection-Union method to predict earthquake location. Based on the geometry of a VLF/LF network, the Intersection-Union method was introduced to estimate the earthquake epicenter. This method is based on the overlay of earthquake occurrence probable areas. With simultaneous use of different propagation paths by the Intersection-Union method, an area with a radius of about 300 km was determined as the probable location of the earthquake epicenter. The accuracy of the proposed method is 300 km compared with 1000 km accuracy of other earthquake location prediction scenarios. © Copyright: Author(s) 2021.

Solar energy is considered one of the best essential energy sources to solve the present power crisis. The solar photovoltaic system has a low conversion efficiency that inflicts maximum power extractions. The non-linear relationship between the voltage and current insists on using a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller. Perturb and observe (P&O) MPPT controller is popular because of its simple design and cost-effectiveness features;nonetheless, it has drawbacks while operating under partial shading conditions (PSC). The maximum power trapezium (MPT) method modified the P&O algorithm by incorporating an appropriate scanning mechanism for PSC. Despite having good PSC performance, this method's tracking time is much longer than the conventional algorithm in both uniform irradiance conditions (UIC) and PSC. The algorithm proposed in this paper modifies the MPT method with an extra strategy to distinguish between the UIC and PSC. If the pattern is recognized as UIC, the proposed method utilizes the conventional P&O algorithm to track the MPP;otherwise, scanning techniques are being used. The proposed algorithm's operation was tested on simulation using distinct UIC and PSC patterns and worked effectively. © 2022 IEEE.

Recently, smart cities have become more and more popular as a way to enhance society and the standard of living for its people. These are the results of the increased social and economic prospects that the advancement of information and communication technology (ICT) has brought about. But there are certain issues with our presumptions about privacy and security. The usage of cellphones and other technologies has already enhanced people’s engagement and sense of connection. Gadgets, smart energy meters, and security appliances are commonplace these days. The Internet of Things will soon be fully connected to homes, public spaces, healthcare systems, and other social institutions. In this work, we improve the security performance of communication networks in smart cities by implementing a novel framework and scheme to guarantee strong data secrecy and authentication. The smart city system can set up shared session key procedures and mutual authentication to secure a two-way communication channel between the control center and smart meters. Our comprehensive simulation was used to test and evaluate the security performance of the smart city communication network both with and without our suggested technique. Throughput, latency, load, and traffic received packets per second were all measured. The resources available in our suggested solution were further limited by the fact that we used a network intrusion detection system (NIDS) and a man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack to evaluate and validate the security criteria. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Tea leaf diseases represent a substantial danger to tea plants and agricultural production. In this study, we investigate the usefulness of an automated learning-based technique for the exact classification of diverse tea leaf diseases. We used precision, recall, F1-Score, assistance, and overall accuracy as critical performance indicators to evaluate the categorization model's proficiency using a large dataset covering eight separate disease categories. The results revealed exceptional model performance, including precision, recall, and overall F1-Score values consistently surpassing 91% across all illness classes. The model achieved an amazing general precision of 98%, suggesting its ability to accurately recognize and distinguish between distinct tea leaf illnesses. This study sheds light on the potential of artificial intelligence as an effective tool for illness classification in leaves of tea. The findings are a significant resource for investigators, agronomists, and business practitioners working to improve tea leaf disease control, so adding to the long-term viability and efficiency of tea farms.

The demand for expanding connectivity to remote and isolated areas has intensified the need for global Internet of Things (IoT) solutions. Direct-to-Satellite IoT (DtS-IoT), enabled by advances in nanosatellite technology, allows cost-effective global and direct connectivity between IoT devices and low Earth orbit satellites. However, the most cost-effective DtSIoT networks face resource limitations in user, ground, and space segments, demanding scalable solutions to fully realize their scalability potential. While several resource allocation protocols have been proposed for DtS-IoT, they have mainly been evaluated using static topologies or simplified simulations, overlooking the time-evolving orbital and channel dynamics crucial to DtS-IoT performance. This work bridges this gap by introducing the DtS-IoT Resource Allocation Analysis Framework (DRAAF), a comparison methodology and toolchain for evaluating resource allocation mechanisms in realistic DtS-IoT scenarios. Our method is framed in scalability, energy efficiency, throughput, delay, fairness, and overhead metrics. Utilizing FLoRaSat, a realistic LoRa-based DtS-IoT network simulator, we showcase the methodology with a use case investigating two energy-efficient MAC protocols for DtS-IoT: RESS-IoT and Distributed Queuing (DQ). Results indicate that DQ excels in throughput and node energy efficiency, whereas RESS-IoT reduces delay. Both protocols maintain satellite energy efficiency and enhance fairness in uplink transmissions. These findings underscore the value of our approach in evaluating resource allocation within complex DtS-IoT systems.

Silicon Dangling Bonds (SiDBs) have emerged as a promising post-CMOS technology for achieving ultra-low power dissipation, establishing themselves as a highly anticipated and environmentally friendly competitor in the realm beyond conventional CMOS. To support the SiDB logic framework, design automation approaches have rapidly evolved. However, at the atomic scale of SiDBs, material imperfections pose a significant roadblock in scaling these devices. Consequently, es-tablished design automation flows, which are defect-agnostic, are inadequate and have not kept pace with the latest experimental findings and advances in fabrication capabilities. A first attempt was recently proposed that extends established defect-agnostic physical design methods by rudimentary defect-aware capabilities. While promising at first glance, in this work, we show that this first attempt yields unsatisfactory results. Subsequently, we present a novel approach that automatically designs a tailored SiDB gate on-the-fly whenever an SiDB gate encounters atomic defects in its vicinity, thereby incorporating these atomic defects into its layout as an integral part. Our experimental evaluations confirm that the proposed approach is capable of designing SiDB circuits of significant complexity and size, even in the presence of atomic defects for the first time. Therefore, this work contributes to advancing this promising post-CMOS technology.
