Multi-Objective DER Planning Framework as a TEP Alternative: An Augmented Epsilon-Constraint Approach

Recently, the construction of new transmission lines has faced extreme challenges due to ever-increasing environmental concerns and construction costs. Investing in distributed energy resources (DERs) offers a viable alternative to reduce reliance on new transmission lines. This study introduces a multi-objective bi-level DER planning model as an alternative to transmission network reinforcement. The upper-level problem aims to minimize the total cost of DERs, mitigate the congestion cost of the transmission network, and improve the system reliability while ensuring the profitability of the DER investment. In the lower-level problem, the wholesale electricity market is cleared to determine the optimal locational marginal prices and the operational status of the bulk power system. A scenario-based approach is employed to account for uncertainties in future loads, renewable generation, and generator bid prices. The bi-level problem is reformulated as a single-level optimization using the strong duality condition, with non-linear terms linearized through the big-M method and complementary slackness conditions. The augmented epsilon-constraint method is then employed to solve the multi-objective optimization problem. Finally, the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed DER planning model are evaluated using the IEEE 24-bus test system, offering insights from both system operators and DER investors. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Silicon Dangling Bonds have established themselves as a promising competitor in the field of beyond-CMOS technologies. Their integration density and potential for energy dissipation advantages of several orders of magnitude over conventional circuit technologies sparked the interest of academia and industry alike. While fabrication capabilities advance rapidly and first design automation methodologies have been proposed, physical simulation effectiveness has yet to keep pace. Established algorithms in this domain either suffer from exponential runtime behavior or subpar accuracy levels. In this work, we propose a novel algorithm for the physical simulation of Silicon Dangling Bond systems based on statistical methods that offers both a time-to-solution and an accuracy advantage over the state of the art by more than one order of magnitude and a factor of more than three, respectively, as demonstrated by an exhaustive experimental evaluation. This work proposes a novel approach that integrates super-resolution techniques with off-the-shelf object detection methods to tackle the problem of handling very low-resolution thermal images. The suggested approach begins by enhancing the low-resolution (LR) thermal images through a guided super-resolution strategy, leveraging a high-resolution (HR) visible spectrum image. Subsequently, object detection is performed on the high-resolution thermal image. The experimental results demonstrate tremendous improvements in comparison with both scenarios: when object detection is performed on the LR thermal image alone, as well as when object detection is conducted on the up-sampled LR thermal image. Moreover, the proposed approach proves highly valuable in camouflaged scenarios where objects might remain undetected in visible spectrum images.

Yield augmentation of solar distiller (SD) using low-cost modifications with minimum environmental impacts is highly desirable. In this study, we developed an eco-friendly steam generation device made of carbonized Ficus sycomorus wood to boost the yield of the conventional single-basin solar distiller. Moreover, a hybrid model composed of a long short-term memory (LSTM) network and a Starling murmuration optimizer (SMO) was developed to predict the yield of the established SD. To verify the accuracy of the model, three other models were employed and the distillate yield was predicted. The predicted data of all models was evaluated using different error measures. These models were standalone LSTM and LSTM optimized by an artificial hummingbird algorithm (AHA) or manta ray foraging optimizer (MRFO). Real field data were employed during the training and testing of all models. The thermal performance of the distiller with the steam generation device was compared with that of a traditional distiller based on exergy output, exergy efficiency, and energy efficiency. The distillate yield, exergy efficiency, and energy efficiency of the modified SD were enhanced by 34 %, 49 %, and 40 %, respectively, compared with that of the traditional distiller. Moreover, the total amount of produced drinkable water using the modified SD could reach a high value of 6.1 L/day with a low cost of 0.014 $/L. © 2025

Markov models of reliability of fault-tolerant computer systems are proposed, taking into account two stages of recovery of redundant memory devices. At the first stage, the physical recovery of memory devices is implemented, and at the second, the informational one consists in entering the data necessary to perform the required functions. Memory redundancy is carried out to increase the stability of the system to the loss of unique data generated during the operation of the system. Data replication is implemented in all functional memory devices. Information recovery is carried out using replicas of data stored in working memory devices. The model takes into account the criticality of the system to the timeliness of calculations in real time and to the impossibility of restoring information after multiple memory failures, leading to the loss of all stored replicas of unique data. The system readiness coefficient and the probability of its transition to a non-recoverable state are determined. The readiness of the system for the timely execution of requests is evaluated, taking into account the influence of the shares of the distribution of the performance of the computer allocated for the maintenance of requests and for the entry of information into memory after its physical recovery. © 2022 IEEE.

Owing to the high complexity of chip architecture and assay protocol, considerable effort has been directed toward the design automation of continuous-flow microfluidics over the past decade. Existing methods, however, perform the corresponding design tasks, including binding, scheduling, placement, and routing separately, leading to serious gaps between different steps and potentially even cause design failure. To overcome these drawbacks, in this article, we propose a one-pass design paradigm for continuous-flow microfluidic lab-on-a-chip systems, integrating all the design steps into an 'organic whole,' which has never been considered in prior work. With the proposed paradigm, all the design tasks can be synchronized seamlessly and performed in a combined manner, thereby eliminating the gaps between design steps. Consequently, optimized biochip architectures can be generated without any design adjustments and modifications. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed automation flows. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we investigate the performance of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted aerial communications, where a ground base station (GBS) communicates with distant terrestrial and/or aerial users through the assistance of a RIS-equipped unmanned aerial vehicle (RIS-UAV). The GBS uses the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme to transmit its signal, which is directed to the users via the RIS-UAV. First, the end-to-end channel is characterized, by considering the shadowed Rician fading, then the outage probability performance metric is derived for the underlying system model. Through numerical results, we demonstrate the impact of several system parameters on the performance of NOMA users. Specifically, we found that RIS elements need to be carefully allocated among different NOMA users, according to their channel conditions, in order to achieve the needed quality of service.

Educational operating systems are crucial for facilitating learning in the digital age, as they exist at the intersection of technology and education. While their technical role is well understood, improving their educational value requires enhancing traditional approaches. This paper explores ways to enrich educational operating systems not just through technological advancement, but also by integrating pedagogical principles. In an ever-changing world, the need for an adaptive and responsive educational operating system to meet diverse student needs is crucial. Through case studies, we analyze how design, interactivity, and accessibility can transform these systems into effective and appealing learning environments. We propose a series of recommendations for the future development of educational operating systems, focusing on enhancing the learning experience and promoting student autonomy, thereby offering a fresh perspective on how technology and education can blend harmoniously and efficiently.

Imitation Learning from Purified Demonstrations

Imitation learning has emerged as a promising approach for addressing sequential decision-making problems, with the assumption that expert demonstrations are optimal. However, in real-world scenarios, most demonstrations are often imperfect, leading to challenges in the effectiveness of imitation learning. While existing research has focused on optimizing with imperfect demonstrations, the training typically requires a certain proportion of optimal demonstrations to guarantee performance. To tackle these problems, we propose to purify the potential noises in imperfect demonstrations first, and subsequently conduct imitation learning from these purified demonstrations. Motivated by the success of diffusion model, we introduce a two-step purification via diffusion process. In the first step, we apply a forward diffusion process to smooth potential noises in imperfect demonstrations by introducing additional noise. Subsequently, a reverse generative process is utilized to recover the optimal demonstration from the diffused ones. We provide theoretical evidence supporting our approach, demonstrating that the distance between the purified and optimal demonstration can be bounded. Empirical results on MuJoCo and RoboSuite demonstrate the effectiveness of our method from different aspects. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Price based demand response schemes may significantly improve power system efficiency. Additionally, it is desired that such schemes yield improved power operation, by reducing the peak consumption. This paper proposes the Intraday Block Pricing (IBP) scheme, aiming to promote effective demand response among consumers by charging their electricity usage based on intraday time-slots. To design the prices associated with the proposed scheme, we formulate a bilevel optimization problem that aims to minimize the Peak-to-Average Ratio (PAR) and simultaneously benefit the consumers and the utility company. The bilevel problem is converted into a single-level Mathematical Program with Equilibrium Constraints (MPEC). The resulting MPEC is non-convex and includes nonlinear constraints. Hence, to obtain a solution, it is relaxed into a Mixed Integer Linear Program by dealing with all nonlinearities. To evaluate the conservativeness of the proposed approach, a lower bound to the cost of the original bilevel problem is obtained. The applicability of the proposed scheme is demonstrated with simulations on various case studies, which exhibit a significant reduction in PAR and economic gains for the utility company and consumers. Moreover, simulation results show that the solutions of the original and relaxed problems are equivalent, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed solution approach. Further simulation results demonstrate significant advantages in the performance of the IBP scheme when compared to existing schemes in the literature. © 2022, CC BY-SA.
