EEG based emotion recognition technology is currently an important concept in artificial intelligence, and also holds great potential in emotional health care. Nevertheless, one major limitation of the prior approaches is they do not capture the relationships between different time-series and channels explicitly, resulting in inevitable low performance, especially in subject-independent recognition settings. In this paper, we propose a novel graph attention network based model to address this issue. Our framework includes dual-pipeline Graph Attention Network layers in parallel to learn the complex dependencies of multi-channel EEG in both temporal and spatial dimensions. The proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art models on benchmark SEED dataset. Further analysis shows that our method also has good interpretability. As far as we know, it is the first work that introduce graph attention network into EEG based emotion detection research. © 2021 IEEE.

Federated learning (FL) has witnessed an increase in adoption mainly because of its practical implications and ability to leverage large amounts of data while safeguarding their privacy. However, at its core, FL highly relies on the resources of its participants (i.e., clients), that directly influence the accuracy of the global model in any given training task. A significant challenge arises from the presence of clients that do not fully engage in the training process, yet still benefit from the updated models provided by the server. This lack of active participation has the potential to undermine the overall performance of the global model. Furthermore, free-riders create an unfair scenario where honest participants contribute more while receiving the same overall benefit. In this work, we propose a strategy that relies on an ensemble of several distance measures to mitigate the impact of free-riders in FL environments. By integrating multiple distance metrics into a unified ensemble approach, our objective is to detect and identify free-riders effectively. Extensive simulations and experimental results highlight the robustness of our approach.

In this paper, we present a digital twin (DT)-assisted adaptive video streaming scheme to enhance personalized quality-of-experience (PQoE). Since PQoE models are user-specific and time-varying, existing schemes based on universal and time-invariant PQoE models may suffer from performance degradation. To address this issue, we first propose a DT-assisted PQoE model construction method to obtain accurate user-specific PQoE models. Specifically, user DTs (UDTs) are respectively constructed for individual users, which can acquire and utilize users' data to accurately tune PQoE model parameters in real time. Next, given the obtained PQoE models, we formulate a resource management problem to maximize the overall long-term PQoE by taking the dynamics of users' locations, video requests, and buffer statuses into account. To solve this problem, a deep reinforcement learning algorithm is developed to jointly determine segment version selection, and communication and computing resource allocation. Simulation results on the real-world dataset demonstrate that the proposed scheme can effectively enhance PQoE compared with benchmark schemes.

To deal with the complexity of today's engineering demands, leading universities intend to investigate educational advances and facilities to provide students a creative academic experience that integrates disciplinary knowledge and student transition to the world of the competitive job environment. By tackling a challenging design problem, the capstone project (CP) harnesses creative learning and transfer hands-on abilities into the industrial environment. Effective coaching on the understanding of course objectives aids both advisors and students to properly plan their tasks in CP design. Students and advisors must have a shared understanding of their roles and responsibilities, as well as the extent of independence anticipated from students. This study identifies specific areas in the capstone project that require direct advisor mentoring, aside with other areas in which students are anticipated to work independently, through a questionnaire survey consisting of 206 participants from both segments: advisors and final year engineering students. The survey results outline the discrepancies and consensus of perceptions amongst both segments, provide insights about current CP delivery, and highlight potential modifications that may be considered for improving the delivery of the capstone project where optimum levels of knowledge and skills are obtained by students. The results of this study serve as basis for guiding faculty members about finding the right balance of mentorship and students' independence, as students progress throughout different stages of their final year design capstone projects.

Plant identification and categorization tasks require accurate leaf classification. In this study, we investigate the use of deep learning approaches for categorizing the leaves of cempedak (Artocarpus integra) and jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus). We use the well-known deep learning architectures VGG16 and Inception v3 to correctly categorize the leaf images. A dataset of 204 leaf images, with equal representation from jackfruit and cempedak, is used to train and assess the models. According to the experimental findings, the VGG16 and Inception v3 architectures both perform exceptionally well when classifying leaves. Jackfruit and cempedak leaves are accurately classified with 97.57% accuracy by the VGG16 model. These high accuracy rates demonstrate how well deep learning models are able to differentiate between the two leaf varieties.

In this study, we investigate a novel "dimerized" dielectric metasurface featuring dual-mode resonances governed by symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum (BICs). The metasurface design offers advantages such as insensitivity to incident light polarization and exceptionally high quality factors exceeding 105 for low and moderate structural deviations from the monoatomic array. By introducing mastered perturbations in the metasurface via the Brillouin zone folding method, without reducing symmetry, we explore the behavior of symmetry-protected BIC states and their polarization-independent responses. Through numerical simulations and analysis, we demonstrate the superiority of Q factors for specific BIC-based resonances, leading to precise control over interaction behaviors and light engineering in both near and far fields. Our findings contribute to the understanding of BIC resonance interactions and offer insights into the design of high-performance sensing applications and meta-devices with enhanced functionalities. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

In this research, we advanced a spoken language recognition system, moving beyond traditional feature vector-based models. Our improvements focused on effectively capturing language characteristics over extended periods using a specialized pooling layer. We utilized a broad dataset range from Common-Voice, targeting ten languages across Indo-European, Semitic, and East Asian families. The major innovation involved optimizing the architecture of Time Delay Neural Networks. We introduced additional layers and restructured these networks into a funnel shape, enhancing their ability to process complex linguistic patterns. A rigorous grid search determined the optimal settings for these networks, significantly boosting their efficiency in language pattern recognition from audio samples. The model underwent extensive training, including a phase with augmented data, to refine its capabilities. The culmination of these efforts is a highly accurate system, achieving a 97% accuracy rate in language recognition. This advancement represents a notable contribution to artificial intelligence, specifically in improving the accuracy and efficiency of language processing systems, a critical aspect in the engineering of advanced speech recognition technologies. The Federal District and RIDE region is emerging as a new wine tourism destination in Brazil. Wine tourism offers opportunities for modernization at economic, social, and cultural levels. It is important to understand the most relevant experiences and the level of satisfaction among wine tourists to plan and structure the sector effectively in the region. This research aimed to present a roadmap to enhance the satisfaction and experience of wine tourists. Researchers conducted an exploratory study using structural equations with a quantitative approach involving 67 wine tourists. The findings indicate that quality of service accounts for 43.82% of tourist satisfaction, making it the most critical aspect of the wine tourism experience. Consequently, the study produced a roadmap based on the importance and performance matrix, outlining strategies to enhance service quality perceptions through high-quality wines during tastings, memorable tour experiences, and staff friendliness.

Silicon Dangling Bonds have established themselves as a promising competitor in the field of beyond-CMOS technologies. Their integration density and potential for energy dissipation advantages of several orders of magnitude over conventional circuit technologies sparked the interest of academia and industry alike. While fabrication capabilities advance rapidly and first design automation methodologies have been proposed, physical simulation effectiveness has yet to keep pace. Established algorithms in this domain suffer either from exponential runtime behavior or subpar accuracy levels. In this work, we propose a novel algorithm for the physical simulation of Silicon Dangling Bond systems based on statistical methods that offers both a time-to-solution and an accuracy advantage over the state of the art by more than one order of magnitude and a factor of more than three, respectively, as demonstrated by an exhaustive experimental evaluation.

Metamaterial-induced-transparency engineering through quasi-bound states in the continuum by using dielectric cross-shaped trimers

This study presents a novel approach to activate a narrowband transparency line within a reflecting broadband window in all-dielectric metasurfaces, in analogy to the electromagnetically-induced transparency effect, by means of a quasi-bound state in the continuum (qBIC). We demonstrate that the resonance overlapping of a bright mode and a qBIC-based nearly-dark mode with distinct Q-factor can be fully governed by a silicon trimer-based unit cell with broken-inversion-symmetry cross shape, thus providing the required response under normal incidence of a linearly-polarized light. Our analysis that is derived from the far-field multipolar decomposition and near-field electromagnetic distributions uncovers the main contributions of different multipoles on the qBIC resonance, with governing magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole terms supplied by distinct parts of the dielectric "molecule." The findings extracted from this research open up new avenues for the development of polarization-dependent technologies, with particular interest in its capabilities for sensing and biosensing. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.
