The rapid advancement of 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) architecture is facilitating the construction of 5G networks, marking a significant milestone in telecommunications evolution. Given the complexity of the 5G core architecture, traditional simulation methods are insufficient, necessitating novel approaches. Emulator systems are crucial for creating dynamic, controlled environments that enable exploration of real-world scenarios without physical constraints. SEMU5G, a 5G core emulator, SDN controller, and RAN simulator, utilizes Open5GS implemented in Docker Container for test system flexibility and isolation. Additionally, an SDN controller is integrated to monitor data flows in the User Plane Function (UPF) and gNB simulated by UERANSIM in Mininet-WiFi. This comprehensive integration facilitates effective and flexible real-world exploration, providing a dynamic and controlled test environment for 5G core research. Scenario testing comprises two stages: firstly, a fixed network topology is employed to compare resource usage and confirm successful SEMU5G integration. Secondly, a mobile network topology is utilized to implement a mobile device scenario and compare the Quality of Service (QoS) of SEMU5G with other available emulators. These stages ensure thorough evaluation of SEMU5G's performance and its comparative advantage over existing solutions.

Using EEG Signals to Assess Workload during Memory Retrieval in a Real-world Scenario

Objective: The Electroencephalogram (EEG) is gaining popularity as a physiological measure for neuroergonomics in human factor studies because it is objective, less prone to bias, and capable of assessing the dynamics of cognitive states. This study investigated the associations between memory workload and EEG during participants’ typical office tasks on a single-monitor and dual-monitor arrangement. We expect a higher memory workload for the single-monitor arrangement. Approach: We designed an experiment that mimics the scenario of a subject performing some office work and examined whether the subjects experienced various levels of memory workload in two different office setups: 1) a single-monitor setup and 2) a dual-monitor setup. We used EEG band power, mutual information, and coherence as features to train machine learning models to classify high versus low memory workload states. Main results: The study results showed that these characteristics exhibited significant differences that were consistent across all participants. We also verified the robustness and consistency of these EEG signatures in a different data set collected during a Sternberg task in a prior study. Significance: The study found the EEG correlates of memory workload across individuals, demonstrating the effectiveness of using EEG analysis in conducting real-world neuroergonomic studies. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

Fast target-aware learning for few-shot video object segmentation

Few-shot video object segmentation(FSVOS) aims to segment a specific object throughout a video sequence when only the first-frame annotation is given. In this study, we develop a fast target-aware learning approach for FSVOS, where the proposed approach adapts to new video sequences from its firstframe annotation through a lightweight procedure. The proposed network comprises two models. First, the meta knowledge model learns the general semantic features for the input video image and up-samples the coarse predicted mask to the original image size. Second, the target model adapts quickly from the limited support set. Concretely, during the online inference for testing the video, we first employ fast optimization techniques to train a powerful target model by minimizing the segmentation error in the first frame and then use it to predict the subsequent frames. During the offline training, we use a bilevel-optimization strategy to mimic the full testing procedure to train the meta knowledge model across multiple video *** proposed method is trained only on an individual public video object segmentation(VOS) benchmark without additional training sets and compared favorably with state-of-the-art methods on DAVIS-2017, with a J &F overall score of 71.6%, and on YouT ubeVOS-2018, with a J &F overall score of 75.4%. Meanwhile,a high inference speed of approximately 0.13 s per frame is maintained.

Exciton-Exciton Interactions in Van der Waals Heterobilayers

Exciton-exciton interactions are key to understanding nonlinear optical and transport phenomena in van der Waals heterobilayers, which emerged as versatile platforms to study correlated electronic states. We present a combined theory-experiment study of excitonic many-body effects based on first-principle band structures and Coulomb interaction matrix elements. Key to our approach is the explicit treatment of the fermionic substructure of excitons and dynamical screening effects for density-induced energy renormalization and dissipation. We demonstrate that dipolar blueshifts are almost perfectly compensated by many-body effects, mainly by screening-induced self-energy corrections. Moreover, we identify a crossover between attractive and repulsive behavior at elevated exciton densities. Theoretical findings are supported by experimental studies of spectrally narrow, mobile interlayer excitons in atomically reconstructed, h-BN-encapsulated MoSe2/WSe2 heterobilayers. Both theory and experiment show energy renormalization on a scale of a few meV even for high injection densities in the vicinity of the Mott transition. Our results revise the established picture of dipolar repulsion dominating exciton-exciton interactions in van der Waals heterostructures and open up opportunities for their external design.

The field of natural language processing (NLP) has dramatically expanded within the last decade. Many human-being applications are conducted daily via NLP tasks, starting from machine translation, speech recognition, text generation and recommendations, Part-of-Speech tagging (POS), and Named-Entity Recognition (NER). However, low-resourced languages, such as the Central-Kurdish language (CKL), mainly remain unexamined due to shortage of necessary resources to support their development. The POS tagging task is the base of other NLP tasks;for example, the POS tag set has been used to standardized languages to provide the relationship between words among the sentences, followed by machine translation and text recommendation. Specifically, for the CKL, most of the utilized or provided POS tagsets are neither standardized nor comprehensive. To this end, this study presented an accurate and comprehensive POS tagset for the CKL to provide better performance of the Kurdish NLP tasks. The article also collected most of the POS tags from different studies as well as from Kurdish linguistic experts to standardized part-of-speech tags. The proposed POS tagset is designed to annotate a large CKL corpus and support Kurdish NLP tasks. The initial investigations of this study via comparison with the Universal Dependencies framework for standard languages, show that the proposed POS tagset can streamline or correct sentences more accurately for Kurdish NLP tasks. © 2025, CC BY.

Elastic scaling in response to changes on demand is a main benefit of serverless computing. When bursty workloads arrive, a serverless platform launches many new containers and initializes function environments (known as cold starts), which incurs significant startup latency. To reduce cold starts, platforms usually pause a container after it serves a request, and reuse this container for subsequent requests. However, this reuse strategy cannot efficiently reduce cold starts because the schedulers are agnostic of container lifecycle. For example, it may ignore soon available containers or evict soon needed containers. We propose a container lifecycle-aware scheduling strategy for serverless computing, CAS. The key idea is to control distribution of requests and determine creation or eviction of containers according to different lifecycle phases of containers. We implement a prototype of CAS on OpenWhisk. Our evaluation shows that CAS reduces 81% cold starts and therefore brings a 63% reduction at 95th percentile latency compared with native scheduling strategy in OpenWhisk when there is worker contention between workloads, and does not add significant performance overhead. © 2021 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Volatile threshold resistive switching and neuronal oscillations in phase-change materials, specifically those undergoing metal-to-insulator and charge density wave transitions, offer unique attributes such as fast and low-field volatile switching, tunability, and non-linear behaviors. These characteristics are particularly promising for emulating neuronal behavior and thus hold great potential for realizing energy-efficient neuromorphic computing. In this review, we summarize recent advances in the development of neuronal oscillator devices based on three archetypal electronic phase-change materials: the correlated oxide VO2, the charge density wave transition metal dichalcogenide 1T-TaS2, and the emerging phase-change chalcogenide perovskite BaTiS3. We discuss progress from the perspective of materials development, including structural phase transitions, synthesis methods, electrical properties, and device implementation. Finally, we emphasize the major challenges that must be addressed for practical applications of these phase-change materials and provide our outlook on the future research directions in this rapidly evolving field. © 2025, CC BY.

The survey evaluates various algorithms for identifying structural abnormalities and diagnosing retinal diseases, and it identifies future research directions based on a critical analysis of existing literature. This comprehensive study, which reviews both clinical and automated detection methods using different modalities, appears to be unique in its scope. With the substantial improvement of people’s living standards, the amount of domestic garbage is increasing rapidly, and intelligent waste classification has become an urgent need in modern society. In this paper, we propose a real-time garbage detection model based on the improved YOLOv5 (you only look once version 5) algorithm. Firstly, mosaic data enhancement is introduced to enrich the background of the detection object and improve the robustness of the network. Secondly, Distance-IOU Non-Maximum Suppression is used to replace the traditional Non-Maximum Suppression to improve the suppression effect of prediction boxes. Finally, the network is further optimized from the aspect of activation function. The experimental results show that among the four versions of YOLOv5, their mean average precision(mAP) all reach more than 84%, The improved YOLOv5x has the best recognition effect, whose mAP reaches 89.4%, which is 2.1% higher than that of YOLOv5x and 5.3% higher than that of YOLOv5s. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Adaptive mixture approximation for target tracking in clutter

Target tracking represents a state estimation problem recurrent in many practical scenarios like air traffic control, autonomous vehicles, marine radar surveillance and so on. In a Bayesian perspective, when phenomena like clutter are present, the vast majority of the existing tracking algorithms have to deal with association hypotheses which can grow in the number over time;in that case, the posterior state distribution can become computationally intractable and approximations have to be introduced. In this work, the impact of the number of hypotheses and corresponding reductions is investigated both in terms of employed computational resources and tracking performances. For this purpose, a recently developed adaptive mixture model reduction algorithm is considered in order to assess its performances when applied to the problem of single object tracking in the presence of clutter and to provide additional insights on the addressed problem.
