Chalcogenide perovskites such as BaZrS3 are promising candidates for next generation optoelectronics such as photodetectors and solar cells. Compared to widely studied polycrystalline thin films, single crystals of BaZrS3 with minimal extended and point defects, are ideal platform to study the material’s intrinsic transport properties and to make first-generation optoelectronic devices. However, the surface dielectrics formed on BaZrS3 single crystals due to sulfation or oxidation have led to significant challenges to achieving high quality electrical contacts, and hence, realizing the high-performance optoelectronic devices. Here, we report the development of electrical contact fabrication processes on BaZrS3 single crystals, where various processes were employed to address the surface dielectric issue. With the emergence of Cloud computing, Internet of Things-enabled Human-computer Interfaces, Generative Artificial Intelligence, and high-accurate Machine and Deep-learning recognition and predictive models, along with the Post Covid-19 proliferation of social networking, and remote communications, the Metaverse gained a lot of popularity. Metaverse has the prospective to extend the physical world using virtual and augmented reality so the users can interact seamlessly with the real and virtual worlds using avatars and holograms. It has the potential to impact people in the way they interact on social media, collaborate in their work, perform marketing and business, teach, learn, and even access personalized healthcare. Several works in the literature examine Metaverse in terms of hardware wearable devices, and virtual reality gaming applications. However, the requirements of realizing the Metaverse in realtime and at a large-scale need yet to be examined for the technology to be usable. To address this limitation, this paper presents the temporal evolution of Metaverse definitions and captures its evolving requirements. Consequently, we provide insights into Metaverse requirements. RDH-DES: Reversible Data Hiding over Distributed Encrypted-Image Servers Based on Secret Sharing

Reversible Data Hiding in Encrypted Image (RDHEI) schemes may redistribute the data hiding procedure to other parties and can preserve privacy of the cover image. Recently, cloud computing technology has led to the rapid growth of networked media, and many multimedia rights are owned by multiple parties, such as a film's producer and multiple distributors. Thus, the data hiding task could be distributed to multiple distributed servers. Multi-party data hiding has become an important demand for networked media. In addition, it is essential to preserve multi-server and multi-message privacy and data integrity. However, most of the RDHEI schemes involve only one data hider. That inspired us to design the secure multi-party embedding over distributed encrypted-image servers as a solution for multi-party RDHEI applications. In this article, we propose a novel Reversible Data Hiding over Distributed Encrypted-Image Servers (RDH-DES) based on secret sharing. The Chinese remainder theorem, secret sharing, and block-level scrambling are developed as a lightweight cryptography to generate the encrypted image shares. These shares are distributed to different image servers and are used to embed secret data in the proposed framework. The marked encrypted image can be constructed through the marked encrypted shares from different parties, and the decryption and extraction can be completed by the receiver. The experimental results and theoretical analysis have demonstrated that the proposed scheme is secure and effective. © 2023 Association for Computing Machinery.

Sparse common feature representation for undersampled face recognition

This work investigates the problem of undersampled face recognition (i.e., insufficient training data) encountered in practical Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. Insufficient and uncertain samples captured by IoT devices may include background and facial disguise that makes face recognition more challenging than that with sufficient and reliable images. Many models work well in face recognition on a big data set, but when training data are insufficient, they achieve unsatisfactory performance. This work proposes a novel method named sparse common feature-based representation (SCFR) that provides a unique and stable result and completely avoids very time-consuming training required by a deep learning model. Specially, it constructs a common feature dictionary using both training and test images. Thereinto, a common feature is based on a discriminative common vector and learned by a Gaussian mixture model for both training and test images in a semisupervised learninig manner, which would reduce the difference among samples in each class. In the optimization, the latent indicator of test data is initialized by the estimated label. This can avoid learning invalid information and lead to good prototype images. A new variation dictionary characterizes variables that can be shared by different classes. Finally, this work adopts minimum reconstruction residuals to recognize test images, thus bringing about a substantial improvement in SCFR's performance. Extensive results on benchmark face databases demonstrate that the proposed method is better than the state-of-the-art methods handling undersampled face recognition. © 2014 IEEE.

With the advancement and availability of the internet in the present age, everything is being wireless. Be it our home appliances or high defined monitoring systems, Wireless sensor networks play an important role. But with advancement comes a high probability of getting attacked. One of these attacks is the Blackhole attack (BHA), in which a node drains all the traffic towards itself and discards the data traffic without sending it towards the receiver. There exist multiple approaches that help to protect a network against BHA, but existing approaches have some drawbacks. Many proposed schemes make sure that the given technique uses less energy but failed to reduce the packet drop ratio. In the detection of BHA, the proposed scheme should not only detect defected nodes but also manages the efficiency. The proposed methodology used mobile agents with authentication of nodes and trust values to detect black hole nodes. The methodology is tested using different evaluation measures such as energy consumption, latency, network life, and packet delivery ratio. The proposed method uses a detection algorithm that increases energy consumption and hence networks lifetime. Packet delivery rate is increased by 19.51%, the energy consumption is reduced by 53.3%, and network life is increased by 43.3% as compared to the previous technique.

Age factors and muscular diseases like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and myopathy significantly reduce muscle activity. Early and accurate diagnosis of ALS and myopathy is of great significance for maintaining better life quality. Electromyogram (EMG) signals of the Biceps Brachii muscles are widely used for the diagnosis of ALS and myopathy through a computer-aided automated system. This results in early diagnosis of the diseases which is helpful in symptom management in the patients. In this article, EMG signals were first filtered using Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) through reconstruction of the signal using appropriate Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs). Preprocessed signals were reconstructed using relative energy-based thresholding of IMFs. Important features of preprocessed EMG signals were extracted using Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) and Gammatone Cepstral Coefficient (GTCC). The final feature vector was constructed by a combination of MFCC and GTCC features. These features were used to train and test Cubic Support Vector Machine (C-SVM). C-SVM yielded the best results of 91.1% mean accuracy for distinguishing between Normal, ALS, and Myopathy signals. The proposed method was compared with a range of other state-of-the-art classification methods. The results of this research advocate the effectiveness of the proposed framework for the accurate diagnosis of neuromuscular diseases in clinical environments.

A system built for both deterministic transfer processes and contact photolithography

A home-built compact system that functions as both a transfer stage for deterministic transfer processes and a mask aligner for contact photolithography, is constructed. The precision translation sample stage and optical microscope are shared between the two modes. In the transfer mode, assisted by either an adhesive or a heating element, the setup has been used to deterministically transfer freestanding semiconductors, 2D materials, and van der Waals electrodes. When configured in photolithography mode, the proposed instrument has been employed to fabricate various micro-scale patterns and devices, with minimum feature sizes of ~1-2 µm achieved. Our prototype instrument provides a feasible solution for preforming high quality deterministic transfer and photolithography processes on one single tool in house. © 2024, CC BY.

Role of masks in mitigating viral spread on networks

Masks have remained an important mitigation strategy in the fight against COVID-19 due to their ability to prevent the transmission of respiratory droplets between individuals. In this work, we provide a comprehensive quantitative analysis of the impact of mask-wearing. To this end, we propose a novel agent-based model of viral spread on networks where agents may either wear no mask or wear one of several types of masks with different properties (e.g., cloth or surgical). We derive analytical expressions for three key epidemiological quantities: The probability of emergence, the epidemic threshold, and the expected epidemic size. In particular, we show how the aforementioned quantities depend on the structure of the contact network, viral transmission dynamics, and the distribution of the different types of masks within the population. Through extensive simulations, we then investigate the impact of different allocations of masks within the population and tradeoffs between the outward efficiency and inward efficiency of the masks. Interestingly, we find that masks with high outward efficiency and low inward efficiency are most useful for controlling the spread in the early stages of an epidemic, while masks with high inward efficiency but low outward efficiency are most useful in reducing the size of an already large spread. Last, we study whether degree-based mask allocation is more effective in reducing the probability of epidemic as well as epidemic size compared to random allocation. The result echoes the previous findings that mitigation strategies should differ based on the stage of the spreading process, focusing on source control before the epidemic emerges and on self-protection after the emergence.

Simplify Implant Depth Prediction as Video Grounding: A Texture Perceive Implant Depth Prediction Network

Surgical guide plate is an important tool for the dental implant surgery. However, the design process heavily relies on the dentist to manually simulate the implant angle and depth. When deep neural networks have been applied to assist the dentist quickly locates the implant position, most of them are not able to determine the implant depth. Inspired by the video grounding task which localizes the starting and ending time of the target video segment, in this paper, we simplify the implant depth prediction as video grounding and develop a Texture Perceive Implant Depth Prediction Network (TPNet), which enables us to directly output the implant depth without complex measurements of oral bone. TPNet consists of an implant region detector (IRD) and an implant depth prediction network (IDPNet). IRD is an object detector designed to crop the candidate implant volume from the CBCT, which greatly saves the computation resource. IDPNet takes the cropped CBCT data to predict the implant depth. A Texture Perceive Loss (TPL) is devised to enable the encoder of IDPNet to perceive the texture variation among slices. Extensive experiments on a large dental implant dataset demonstrated that the proposed TPNet achieves superior performance than the existing methods. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. 科学正在进入一个新时代——第五范式——它被认为是知识整合到不同领域的主要特征,是基于无所不在的机器学习系统的计算社区中智能驱动的工作。在此,我们通过在天河一号超级计算机系统上构建的催化材料专门设计的典型平台案例,生动地阐明了第五范式的本质,旨在促进第五范式在其他领域的培养。第五范式平台主要包括模型自动构建(原始数据提取)、指纹自动构建(神经网络特征选择)以及跨学科知识串联的重复迭代(“火山图”)。与分解一起进行的是对迭代中实现的体系结构的性能评估。通过讨论,第五范式的智能驱动平台可以极大地简化和改进研究中极其繁琐和具有挑战性的工作,并通过补偿机器学习中缺少样本和替代一些由于计算资源不足而导致的数值计算来实现数值计算与机器学习之间的相互反馈,从而加速探索过程。在数据驱动的学科中,跨学科专家的协同作用和对动态数据需求的急剧增长仍然是一个挑战。我们相信,对第五范式平台的一瞥可以为其在其他领域的应用铺平道路。
