We present a hierarchical simulation approach for the dependability analysis and evaluation of a highly available commercial cache-based RAID storage system. The architecture is complex and includes several layers of overlapping error detection and recovery mechanisms. Three abstraction levels have been developed to model the cache architecture, cache operations, and error detection and recovery mechanism. The impact of faults and errors occurring in the cache and in the disks is analyzed at each level of the hierarchy. A simulation submodel is associated with each abstraction level. The models have been developed using DEPEND, a simulation-based environment for system-level dependability analysis, which provides facilities to inject faults into a functional behavior model, to simulate error detection and recovery mechanisms, and to evaluate quantitative measures. Several fault models are defined for each submodel to simulate cache component failures, disk failures, transmission errors, and data errors in the cache memory and in the disks. Some of the parameters characterizing fault injection in a given submodel correspond to probabilities evaluated from the simulation of the lower-level submodel. Based on the proposed methodology, we evaluate and analyze: the system behavior under a real workload and high error rate (focusing on error bursts); the coverage of the error detection mechanisms implemented in the system and the error latency distributions; and the accumulation of errors in the cache and in the disks.

The pair-pair correlation function of the two-dimensional t−J model is studied by using the power-Lanczos method under the assumption of monotonic behavior. In comparison with the results of the ideal Fermi gas, we conclude that the 2D t−J model does not have long-range d-wave superconducting correlation in the interesting parameter range of J/t≤0.5. Implications of this result are also discussed.

An approximate method for solving the Riemann problem is needed to construct Godunov schemes for relativistic hydrodynamical equations. Such an approximate Riemann solver is presented in this paper which treats all waves emanating from an initial discontinuity as themselves discontinuous. Therefore, jump conditions for shocks are approximately used for rarefaction waves. The solver is easy to implement in a Godunov scheme and converges rapidly for relativistic hydrodynamics. The fast convergence of the solver indicates the potential of a higher performance of a Godunov scheme in which the solver is used.

Coherence protocols and memory consistency models are two improtant issues in hardware coherent shared memory multiprocessors and softare distributed shared memory(DSM) systems. Over the years, many researchers have made extensive study on these two issues repectively. However, the interaction between them has not been studied in the literature. In this paper, we study the coherence protocols and memory consistency models used by hardware and software DSM systems in detail. Based on our analysis, we draw a general definition for memory consistency model, i.e., memory consistency model is the logical sum of the ordering of events in each processor and coherence protocol. We also point that in hardware DSM system the emphasis of memory consistency model is relaxing the restriction of event ordering, while in software DSM system, memory consistency model focuses mainly on relaxing coherence protocol. Taking Lazy Release Consistency(LRC) as an example, we analyze the relationship between coherence protocols and memory consistency models in software DSM systems, and find that whether the advantages of LRC can be exploited or not depends greatly on it's corresponding protocol. We draw the conclusion that the more relaxed consistency model is, the more relaxed coherence protocol needed to support it. This conclusion is very useful when we design a new consistency model. Furthermore, we make some improvements on traditional multiple writer protocol, and as far as we aware, we describe the complex state transition for multiple writer protocol for the first time. In the end, we list the main research directions for memory consistency models in hardware and software DSM systems.
