Recent advancements in ophthalmology foundation models such as RetFound have demonstrated remarkable diagnostic capabilities but require massive datasets for effective pre-training, creating significant barriers for development and deployment. To address this critical challenge, we propose FundusGAN, a novel hierarchical feature-aware generative framework specifically designed for high-fidelity fundus image synthesis. Our approach leverages a Feature Pyramid Network within its encoder to comprehensively extract multi-scale information, capturing both large anatomical structures and subtle pathological features. The framework incorporates a modified StyleGAN-based generator with dilated convolutions and strategic upsampling adjustments to preserve critical retinal structures while enhancing pathological detail representation. Comprehensive evaluations on the DDR, DRIVE, and IDRiD datasets demonstrate that FundusGAN consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods across multiple metrics (SSIM: 0.8863, FID: 54.2, KID: 0.0436 on DDR). Furthermore, disease classification experiments reveal that augmenting training data with FundusGAN-generated images significantly improves diagnostic accuracy across multiple CNN architectures (up to 6.49% improvement with ResNet50). These results establish FundusGAN as a valuable foundation model component that effectively addresses data scarcity challenges in ophthalmological AI research, enabling more robust and generalizable diagnostic systems while reducing dependency on large-scale clinical data collection. We introduce a stacking strategy to design nonlinear chiral metasurfaces with high rotational symmetry, enabling degenerate quasi-bound-in-the-continuum resonances of absolute chirality. This symmetry allows for converting a circularly polarized pump into a circularly polarized nonlinear signal. Consequently, our rotation-symmetric bilayered metasurface design, tailored to respond solely to one specific circular polarization, can up-convert a linear or arbitrary polarized pump into circularly polarized nonlinear signals. The intensity ratios of these signals scale as the fourth (second) power of the chiral resonance amplitude for the second (third) harmonic.

Deep Neural Cellular Potts Models

The cellular Potts model (CPM) is a powerful computational method for simulating collective spatiotemporal dynamics of biological cells. To drive the dynamics, CPMs rely on physics-inspired Hamiltonians. However, as first principles remain elusive in biology, these Hamiltonians only approximate the full complexity of real multicellular systems. To address this limitation, we propose NeuralCPM, a more expressive cellular Potts model that can be trained directly on observational data. At the core of NeuralCPM lies the Neural Hamiltonian, a neural network architecture that respects universal symmetries in collective cellular dynamics. Moreover, this approach enables seamless integration of domain knowledge by combining known biological mechanisms and the expressive Neural Hamiltonian into a hybrid model. Our evaluation with synthetic and real-world multicellular systems demonstrates that NeuralCPM is able to model cellular dynamics that cannot be accounted for by traditional analytical Hamiltonians. A VLSI-oriented parallel FFT algorithm

Usually, parallel pipelined PFT processors are used to compute long FFT's due to high processing rate and easy implementation. The efficient VLSI implementation of each FFT processor at the pipelines is a critical problem to be considered. We propose a new parallel FFT algorithm that removes the complex multiplier between the two pipeline stages. The new algorithm also simplifies the address generation of twiddle factors and reduces the number of twiddle factors to a minimum. With the new algorithm, each FFT processor at the pipelines can be integrated easily onto a single chip.

Quantum memory assisted entangled state verification with local measurements

We consider the quantum memory assisted quantum state verification task, where an adversary prepares independent multipartite entangled states and sends them to the local verifiers, who then store several copies in the quantum memory and measure them collectively to make a decision. We establish an exact analytic formula for optimizing two-copy state verification, where the verifiers store two copies, and give a globally optimal two-copy strategy for multiqubit graph states involving only Bell measurements. When the verifiers can store arbitrarily many copies, we present a dimension expansion technique that designs efficient verification strategies for this case, showcasing its application to efficiently verifying Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ)-like states. These strategies become increasingly advantageous with growing memory resources, ultimately approaching the theoretical limit of efficiency. Our findings demonstrate that quantum memories enhance state verification efficiency, shedding light on error-resistant strategies and practical applications of large-scale quantum memory assisted verification.

COph100: A comprehensive fundus image registration dataset from infants constituting the "RIDIRP" database

Retinal image registration is vital for diagnostic therapeutic applications within the field of ophthalmology. Existing public datasets, focusing on adult retinal pathologies with high-quality images, have limited number of image pairs and neglect clinical challenges. To address this gap, we introduce COph100, a novel and challenging dataset known as the Comprehensive Ophthalmology Retinal Image Registration dataset for infants with a wide range of image quality issues constituting the public "RIDIRP" database1. COph100 consists of 100 eyes, each with 2 to 9 examination sessions, amounting to a total of 491 image pairs carefully selected from the publicly available dataset. We manually labeled the corresponding ground truth image points and provided automatic vessel segmentation masks for each image. We have assessed COph100 in terms of image quality and registration outcomes using state-of-the-art algorithms. This resource enables a robust comparison of retinal registration methodologies and aids in the analysis of disease progression in infants, thereby deepening our understanding of pediatric ophthalmic conditions. MM-Retinal V2: Transfer an Elite Knowledge Spark into Fundus Vision-Language Pretraining

Vision-language pretraining (VLP) has been investigated to generalize across diverse downstream tasks for fundus image analysis. Although recent methods showcase promising achievements, they significantly rely on large-scale private image-text data but pay less attention to the pretraining manner, which limits their further advancements. In this work, we introduce MM-Retinal V2, a high-quality image-text paired dataset comprising CFP, FFA, and OCT image modalities. Then, we propose a novel fundus vision-language pretraining model, namely KeepFIT V2, which is pretrained by integrating knowledge from the elite data spark into categorical public datasets. Specifically, a preliminary textual pretraining is adopted to equip the text encoder with primarily ophthalmic textual knowledge. Moreover, a hybrid image-text knowledge injection module is designed for knowledge transfer, which is essentially based on a combination of global semantic concepts from contrastive learning and local appearance details from generative learning. Extensive experiments across zero-shot, few-shot, and linear probing settings highlight the generalization and transferability of KeepFIT V2, delivering performance competitive to state-of-the-art fundus VLP models trained on large-scale private image-text datasets. We present our theoretical analysis and coarse- grained molecular dynamics （CGMD） simulation results to describe the mechanics of breakup of spherical vesi- cles driven by changes in spontaneous curvature. System- atic CGMD simulations reveal the phase diagrams for the breakup and show richness in breakup morphologies. A the- oretical model based on Griffith fracture mechanics is devel- oped and used to predict the breakup condition.

Neuroblastoma is a prevalent pediatric tumor with a low 5-year survival rate among high-risk patients, and the prognosis remains poor despite available therapeutic interventions. Therefore, identifying novel and effective therapeutic targets is critical for improving outcomes in these patients. In this study, we performed an integrative analysis of two neuroblastoma circRNA sequencing datasets to identify potential drug targets. By comparing circRNA expression levels between neuroblastoma tissues and adjacent normal tissues, we identified differentially expressed circRNAs and subsequently predicted 30 hub circRNAs through Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis. To elucidate the functional roles of these circRNAs, we investigated their interactions with RNA-binding proteins. The results suggest that hsa_circ_0051680 and hsa_circ_0006107 may influence neuroblastoma progression through interactions with FUS and IGF2BP1, respectively. Furthermore, we analyzed the translational potential of the hub circRNAs, revealing that six circRNAs encode proteins with complex secondary structures. Molecular docking analysis identified five high-affinity complexes between circRNA-encoded proteins (hsa_circ_0000786, hsa_circ_0005087, hsa_circ_0006867) and their corresponding ligands. These circRNA-derived proteins present promising novel drug targets for both the diagnosis and treatment of neuroblastoma.

Vision-Amplified Semantic Entropy for Hallucination Detection in Medical Visual Question Answering

Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have demonstrated significant potential in medical Visual Question Answering (VQA). Yet, they remain prone to hallucinations—incorrect responses that contradict input images, posing substantial risks in clinical decision-making. Detecting these hallucinations is essential for establishing trust in MLLMs among clinicians and patients, thereby enabling their real-world adoption. Current hallucination detection methods, especially semantic entropy (SE), have demonstrated promising hallucination detection capacity for LLMs. However, adapting SE to medical MLLMs by incorporating visual perturbations presents a dilemma. Weak perturbations preserve image content and ensure clinical validity, but may be overlooked by medical MLLMs, which tend to over rely on language priors. In contrast, strong perturbations can distort essential diagnostic features, compromising clinical interpretation. To address this issue, we propose Vision Amplified Semantic Entropy (VASE), which incorporates weak image transformations and amplifies the impact of visual input, to improve hallucination detection in medical VQA. We first estimate the semantic predictive distribution under weak visual transformations to preserve clinical validity, and then amplify visual influence by contrasting this distribution with that derived from a distorted image. The entropy of the resulting distribution is estimated as VASE. Experiments on two medical open-ended VQA datasets demonstrate that VASE consistently outperforms existing hallucination detection methods. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.
