Improving algorithmic literacy empowers people to engage with algorithm-driven products across myriad applications with material impact. However, there remains a shortage of interventions aimed at nurturing algorithmic literacy within everyday life. With algorithmic awareness and algorithmic knowledge serving as vital pillars for algorithmic literacy, we initiated a heuristic intervention. This intervention drew upon official information from platforms including Taobao, Bilibili, and Weibo, integrating stimulus questions and heuristic materials. We conducted online experiments, amassing a dataset of 622 responses. The outcomes of our data analysis substantiated the efficacy of the heuristic intervention in bolstering algorithmic awareness and advancing algorithmic knowledge. Moreover, the results indicated a positive correlation between users’ algorithmic knowledge and their algorithmic awareness, suggesting that as users’ algorithmic knowledge increased, so did their level of algorithmic awareness. These findings hold substantial significance for guiding future practices in the cultivation of algorithmic literacy. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Relevance judgment has been studied in the information field for a long time. Eye movement data contains a large amount of user subjective information, and the way of its collection is becoming easier. With the rising penetration rate of mobile Internet, people are getting used to adopt the mobile search to solve problems. The higher the utilization rate of mobile search, the higher the user's requirements for the accuracy of mobile search results. In order to explore the user relevance judgment in the mobile reverse image search scenario, this paper combines eye movement data to figure out the relation between relevance judgment and users’ eye movement. With the help of the relation the user's relevance experience can be inferred through eye movement data, thereby optimizing the SERP page, so as to achieve the effect of reasonable search results ranking and recommendation accuracy. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In this paper, we present a review of how the various aspects of any study using an eye tracker (such as the instrument, methodology, environment, participant, etc.) affect the quality of the recorded eye-tracking data and the obtained eye-movement and gaze measures. We take this review to represent the empirical foundation for reporting guidelines of any study involving an eye tracker. We compare this empirical foundation to five existing reporting guidelines and to a database of 207 published eye-tracking studies. We find that reporting guidelines vary substantially and do not match with actual reporting practices. We end by deriving a minimal, flexible reporting guideline based on empirical research (Section "An empirically based minimal reporting guideline").

Design is often done by teams of designers and other stakeholders. Design also creates a time-lapsed collaborative relationship between designer(s) and user(s), who "complete the design through use". The intentions of designers in designing and crafting computational artifacts are therefore important for multiple HCI and CSCW related research and design traditions, including (a) appropriation studies, (b) participatory design, (c) design criticism, and (d) design collaborations in organizational contexts. All of these design philosophies handle intentions differently, including normative, organizational, and ethical aspects of what designers and designs 'should' intend. Some people consider intentions to be highly important, and demand explicit articulations of intentions;some people question whether we give the wrong kind of weight to designers' intentions. With this panel, we will bring these notions to the discussion table to allow a deeper understanding of the diverse theoretical perspectives and research methods available to account for designers' intentions. This will help to theorize design as a social activity, and to understand how people negotiate, evolve, and change designs over the lifecycle of a product or a system. This panel opens a conversation, comprising multiple perspectives, to help HCI and CSCW develop new ways to consider designers' intentions from an empirical and theoretical perspective. © ECSCW 2017 - Proceedings of the 15th European Conference on computer Supported Cooperative Work. Dual eye-tracking (DUET) is a promising methodology to study and support collaborative work. The method consists of simultaneously recording the gaze of two collaborators working on a common task. The main themes addressed in the workshop are eye-tracking methodology (how to translate gaze measures into descriptions of joint action, how to measure and model gaze alignment between collaborators, how to include gaze in multimodal interaction models, how to address task specificity inherent to eye-tracking data), empirical studies involving dual eye tracking and more generally future applications of dual eye-tracking in CSCL. The DUET 2013 workshop is a follow-up to DUET 2011 held at ECSCW 2011 conference and DUET 2012 held at the CSCW 2012 conference and brings together scholars who currently develop the approach as well as a larger audience interested in applications of eye-tracking in collaborative situations. A number of recent studies have demonstrated that groups benefit considerably from access to shared visual information. This is due, in part, to the communicative efficiencies provided by the shared visual context. However, a large gap exists between our current theoretical understanding and our existing models. We address this gap by developing a computational model that integrates linguistic cues with visual cues in a way that effectively models reference during tightly-coupled, task-oriented interactions. The results demonstrate that an integrated model significantly outperforms existing language-only and visual-only models. The findings can be used to inform and augment the development of conversational agents, applications that dynamically track discourse and collaborative interactions, and dialogue managers for natural language interfaces. Context awareness perspectives for mobile personal media

Dr. Lehikoinen's current research interests include human– computer interaction especially from the interaction and collaboration point of view and mobile augmented reality.

This article reviews the ongoing evolution of context awareness technologies in mobile devices using personal media as an illustrative application domain. Augmented with metadata, files containing personal media can include significant information about the contexts they describe. The article discusses personal media applications from two different perspectives: (1) through an example that describes the use of context data in a personal media diary application, and (2) with a classification of context architectures that includes three classes of context-aware mobile systems (inbound, shared, and network assisted). These systems are classified on the basis of such factors as their architecture, data flow types, privacy, and interoperability requirements. The article concludes by discussing implications for research and practice.

Purpose - The paper introduces methods for the evaluation of new software applications that build on semantic knowledge technology for use in information- and knowledge-intensive application domains. Design/methodology/approach - While user-centred design is a mature and proven field, the new knowledge-centred applications also require that information quality is assessed in a more profound manner than was considered previously, and the business value generated by semantic knowledge technology is quantified. The methods to be used in different phases of the development cycle are described. Findings - The approaches used in ongoing RTD projects and in different user organizations are described. Research limitations/implications - The analysis of organisational aspects of knowledge management and the benefits of improvements in cooperation mechanisms provide further challenges for methodological development. Practical implications - Recommendations and suggestions for similar innovative research and application development projects are given. Originality/value - While some of the methods are proven and well documented, there is a need to collect further experience with the user validation of applications using semantic knowledge technology. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.
