We propose a novel framework for incorporating unlabeled data into semi-supervised classification problems, where scenarios involving the minimization of either i) adversarially robust or ii) non-robust loss functions have been considered. Notably, we allow the unlabeled samples to deviate slightly (in total variation sense) from the in-domain distribution. The core idea behind our framework is to combine Distributionally Robust Optimization (DRO) with self-supervised training. As a result, we also leverage efficient polynomial-time algorithms for the training stage. From a theoretical standpoint, we apply our framework on the classification problem of a mixture of two Gaussians in Rd, where in addition to the m independent and labeled samples from the true distribution, a set of n (usually with n m) out of domain and unlabeled samples are given as well. Using only the labeled data, it is known that the generalization error can be bounded by ∝ (d/m)1/2. However, using our method on both isotropic and non-isotropic Gaussian mixture models, one can derive a new set of analytically explicit and non-asymptotic bounds which show substantial improvement on the generalization error compared to ERM. Our results underscore two significant insights: 1) out-of-domain samples, even when unlabeled, can be harnessed to narrow the generalization gap, provided that the true data distribution adheres to a form of the "cluster assumption", and 2) the semi-supervised learning paradigm can be regarded as a special case of our framework when there are no distributional shifts. We validate our claims through experiments conducted on a variety of synthetic and real-world datasets. © 2024 12th International Conference on Learning Representations, ICLR 2024. Pedestrian-related accidents account for an estimated 20-25% of the approximately 1.19 million road fatalities occurring annually, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced detection systems in surveillance and smart transportation to mitigate such incidents. The escalating demand for Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications (URLLC) in modern surveillance and transportation systems has become a solution to that problem but highlighted significant challenges in reducing inference times of machine learning models, particularly on constrained hardware. The maximum permissible latency for most vehicular applications ranges from 6 to 20 milliseconds based on the application. When tested on an 8GB RAM setup using the NTU, LLVIP, and VIRAT datasets, YOLOv8n achieved a minimum inference time of approximately 200 milliseconds per frame, making it unsuitable for URLLC applications despite 8GB RAM being an adequate hardware setup for edge devices. This research introduces a new two-stage pipeline that integrates Oculi's Sensing and Processing Unit (SPU) simulation with the YOLOv8n one-stage object detection model to enhance pedestrian detection, thereby addressing these challenges. By leveraging Regions of Interest (ROIs) generated by Oculi's SPU, our approach optimizes the input data for the YOLO model, substantially reducing computational overhead and thus making it suitable for URLLC applications. This integration can lead to a reduction in inference time by up to 93% in the tested frames when being compared to YOLOv8n pre-trained model. © 2024 IEEE.

This study presents an autoencoder-embedded optimization(AEO)algorithm which involves a bi-population cooperative strategy for medium-scale expensive problems(MEPs).A huge search space can be compressed to an informative lowdimensional space by using an autoencoder as a dimension reduction *** search operation conducted in this low space facilitates the population with fast convergence towards the *** strike the balance between exploration and exploitation during optimization,two phases of a tailored teaching-learning-based optimization(TTLBO)are adopted to coevolve solutions in a distributed fashion,wherein one is assisted by an autoencoder and the other undergoes a regular evolutionary ***,a dynamic size adjustment scheme according to problem dimension and evolutionary progress is proposed to promote information exchange between these two phases and accelerate evolutionary convergence *** proposed algorithm is validated by testing benchmark functions with dimensions varying from 50 to *** indicated in our experiments,TTLBO is suitable for dealing with medium-scale problems and thus incorporated into the AEO framework as a base *** with the state-of-the-art algorithms for MEPs,AEO shows extraordinarily high efficiency for these challenging problems,t hus opening new directions for various evolutionary algorithms under AEO to tackle MEPs and greatly advancing the field of medium-scale computationally expensive optimization.

Decentralized Droop-based Finite-Control-Set Model Predictive Control of Inverter-based Resources in Islanded AC Microgrid

This paper presents an improved droop control method to ensure effective power sharing, voltage regulation, and frequency stabilization of inverter-based resources (IBRs) connected in parallel in an islanded AC microgrid. In the contemporary droop control algorithm, the distance between connected inverters affects the effectiveness of the active power-frequency and the reactive power-voltage droop characteristics which results in poor power sharing at the primary level of the microgrid. That is, high impedance emanating from long transmission lines results in instability, poor voltage tracking, and ineffective frequency regulation. Hence, in this work, we use a finite-control-set model predictive controller (FCS-MPC) in the inner loop, which gives efficient voltage tracking, good frequency regulation, and faster performance response. FCS-MPC is easy to implement in fast switching converters and does not suffer from computational burden unlike the continuous-set MPC and is also devoid of issues of multiple-loop, parameter variation, and slow response associated with conventional droop control methods. We derived the condition for bounded stability for the FCS-MPC and the proposed method is tested via a numerical simulation on three IBRs. The results show effective power sharing, capacitor voltage tracking, and efficient frequency regulation with reduced oscillations to changes in load.

This paper explores the application of large-scale foundation models (LSF -Models) for the improved prognostic management of smart grid power transformers. One of the foun-dational architectures of many LSF -Models, including ChatGPT, is the Transformer architecture. This architecture helps LSF-Models perform complex classification predictions and provide users with an appropriately predicted response. The advanced natural language processing techniques of the Transformer ar-chitecture interpret the nuances of power transformer-related data and efficiently extract valuable insights for fault detection and diagnosis. The multiple self-attention mechanisms of the architecture provide an enhanced form of feature extraction which expedites the creation of comprehensive models for large multiclass datasets. During testing, this fault classification method performed with 97.2 % accuracy according to the Matthews Correlation Coefficient when evaluating 45 classes of simulated power transformer internal faults and external transient disturbances. To better represent the diverse multimodal data that compose smart grid systems, this research explores a unified system that integrates multiple machine-learning models into one simple and easy-to-use interface. The backend of this interface again takes advantage of the Transformer architecture to perform conversation-based classification and to provide a response or prediction from the appropriate system-integrated model. The success of the Transformer architecture in diverse applications within the same overall system showcases its potential to analyze the wide range of data typically found throughout a robust smart grid system. © 2023 IEEE.

In the modern landscape of Natural Language Processing (NLP), intelligent chatbots like ChatGPT 3.5 and Google's Bard have shown remarkable competence in generic question-answering (QA) tasks. However, their performance falters when navigating domain-specific QA, particularly in the Arabic language, which is celebrated for its complex morphology and syntax. This paper presents a comprehensive approach to address these issues. The aim of this research is to build a chatbot tailored for a university community. We first create an extensive Arabic Q&A dataset by extracting data from academic documents, employing state-of-the-art Optical Character Recognition (OCR) tools. Then, we evaluate multiple text similarity measures like Pooled FastText Word embedding, BM25 ranking functions, and various semantic sentence embedding models. A thorough performance assessment reveals that the domain-specific model excels at both sentence-level similarity and context-relevance tasks. The developed web application chatbot, leveraging LangChain library and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) methods, outperforms existing chatbots in domain-specific, Arabic language QA scenarios. © 2023 ACM.

At present, there exist some problems in granular clustering methods, such as lack of nonlinear membership description and global optimization of granular data boundaries. To address these issues, in this study, revolving around the parabolic granular data, we propose an overall architecture for parabolic granular modeling and clustering. To begin with, novel coverage and specificity functions are established, and then a parabolic granular data structure is proposed. The fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm is used to obtain the numeric prototypes, and then particle swarm optimization (PSO) is introduced to construct the parabolic granular data from the global perspective under the guidance of principle of justifiable granularity (PJG). Combining the advantages of FCM and PSO, we propose the parabolic granular modeling and optimization (PGMO) method. Moreover, we put forward attribute weights and sample weights as well as a distance measure induced by the Gaussian kernel similarity, and then come up with the algorithm of weighted kernel fuzzy clustering for parabolic granularity (WKFC-PG). In addition, the assessment mechanism of parabolic granular clustering is discussed. In summary, we set up an overall architecture including parabolic granular modeling, clustering, and assessment. Finally, comparative experiments on artificial, UCI, and high-dimensional datasets validate that our overall architecture delivers a good improvement over previous strategies. The parameter analysis and time complexity are also given for WKFC-PG. In contrast with related granular clustering algorithms, it is observed that WKFC-PG performs better than other granular clustering algorithms and has superior stability in handling outliers, especially on high-dimensional datasets. © 2020 IEEE.

Automated lumpy skin grading in bovine images using novel deep convolutional neural networks

The diagnosis and prevention of lumpy skin disease, a viral ailment affecting cattle and buffalo, present significant financial implications for the livestock industry. Traditional methods for identifying lumpy skin disease rely on manual visual inspection by veterinarians, which can be labor-intensive, subjective, and prone to errors. To address these challenges, this study proposes a novel deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) model for the automatic recognition and grading of lumpy skin disease from bovine images. The primary contributions of this research include the development of a DCNN architecture specifically tailored for this task, comprising five convolutional layers, five max pooling layers, two fully connected layers with ReLU activation, and a final fully connected layer with softmax activation. The model’s detection accuracy is further enhanced by applying image cropping and patching techniques, which divide each input image into 12 patches to improve local feature extraction. The proposed model was trained and tested using a publicly available dataset from Kaggle. Comparative analysis was conducted against several state-of-the-art models, including InceptionV3, ResNet50, MobileNetV3, VGG19, and Xception. The DCNN model demonstrated superior performance, achieving the highest validation accuracy of 0.96875, outperforming the compared models in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score. Additionally, the study explores the potential of transitioning from binary to multiclass classification, which would allow for the assessment of the severity of lumpy skin disease. This future direction aims to provide more nuanced and actionable information for veterinary diagnostics. The significance of this research lies in its potential to offer an objective, efficient, and scalable solution for early disease detection and prevention in livestock, thereby presenting considerable economic benefits for farmers and the livestock industry as a whole. The advent of the SiC Bidirectional FET (BiDFET), a monolithic 1.2 kV bidirectional switch, has rendered the single-stage three-phase AC/DC converter topology a promising approach for implementing AC/DC converters. This topology, which integrates a full-bridge converter with a single-phase to three-phase matrix converter via a high-frequency transformer, is particularly suitable for applications requiring galvanic isolation, buck-boost functionality, and bidirectional power flow. The single-stage design eliminates the need for bulky and unreliable electrolytic capacitors, and utilizes a single magnetic component for power transfer. In the matrix converter, bidirectional switches, which were traditionally implemented using combinations of multiple semiconductor devices such as MOSFETs, IGBTs, and diodes, can now be realized using the single-chip solution, BiDFET. This advancement leads to a lower switch count, compact converter implementation, with lower inductance commutation cells, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency and compactness of the system. The paper presents a unified model of the converter, considering all control parameters, including the duty cycles and phase shift of transformer voltages. Detailed expressions for power transfer, transformer currents, and currents at AC and DC ports are provided. Additionally, the paper outlines the conditions necessary for soft-switching of all switches and the commutation schemes required for the practical implementation of the matrix converter modulation scheme. A hardware prototype of a 10 kW, 480 VRMS, LL/ 800 V AC/DC system has been developed, and experimental results are presented to demonstrate its performance. © 2023 IEEE.
