Evaluating the health condition of a material that could potentially contain micro-flaws is a common and important application within the field of non-destructive testing. Examples of such micro-defects include dislocation, fatigue cracks or impurities and are often hard to detect. The ability to precisely measure their type, size and position is a prerequisite for estimating the remaining useful life of the component. One technique that was shown successful in the past is based on traditional ultrasonic testing methods. In most cases, inner micro-flaws induce slight changes of acoustic wave spectrum components. However, these changes are often difficult to detect directly, as they tend to exhibit features that are most naturally analyzed using statistical and probabilistic methods. In this paper we apply Consensus Self-Organizing Models (COSMO) method to detect micro-flaws in metallic material. This approach is essentially an unsupervised deviation detection method based on the concept of “wisdom of the crowd”. This method is used to analyze the spectrum of acoustic waves received by the transducer attached on the surface of material being analyzed. We have modeled a steel board with micro-cracks and collected time-series of acoustic echo response, at different positions on material's surface. The experimental results show that the COSMO method is able to detect and locate micro-flaws.

Prolonged untreated cardiac alternans may lead to ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation or sudden cardiac death. Thus, it is important to develop an effective method for controlling alternans. In this paper, the suppression of cardiac alternans is studied using the recently proposed alternating-period feedback control scheme. Numerical simulations are performed on the Luo-Rudy dynamic (LRd) model for single cell. We showed that the action potential duration alternans and intracellular calcium alternans are significantly suppressed after the control is applied. In particular, our result suggests that the contractile force is more balanced from beat to beat after the alternans is reduced.

Social computing, as the technical foundation of future computational smart societies, has the potential to improve the effectiveness of opensource big data usage, systematically integrate a variety of elements including time, human, resources, scenarios, and organizations in the current cyber-physical-social world, and establish a novel social structure with fair information, equal rights, and a flat configuration. Meanwhile, considering the big modeling gap between the model world and the physical world, the concept of parallel intelligence is introduced. With the help of software-defined everything, parallel intelligence bridges the big modeling gap by means of constructing artificial systems where computational experiments can be implemented to verify social policies, economic strategies, and even military operations. Artificial systems play the role of ＂social laboratories＂ in which decisions are computed before they are executed in our physical society. Afterwards, decisions with the expected outputs are executed in parallel in both the artificial and physical systems to interactively sense, compute, evaluate and adjust system behaviors in real-time, leading system behaviors in the physical system converging to those proven to be optimal in the artificial ones. Thus, the smart guidance and management for our society can be achieved.

This paper extends the performance assessment of an underwater glider path planning approach recently proposed for constrained sub-mesoscale eddy border sampling conditions, for situations benefiting from extended mission planning time. The aim of addressing such situations is to improve the glider vehicle capabilities through improving its off-board controller, which computes an improved trajectory for the eddy sampling task, compared to the usual rather shorter planning time. The improvement in robustness for the controller for several scenarios in this global trajectory optimization is also analyzed, together with comparison to shorter planning time for this autonomous vehicle and environmental data sampling type. As shown through results, the approach is able to provide several useful and non-intuitive solutions, improving in helpful ways. The trajectories for sub-mesoscale eddy sampling are thereby improved, in a way that might be useful for possible machine controller pondering or auto-piloting at open sea, when piloting user feedback is not available or even amidst the consecutive interruptions of user-intensive planning instructions. Managing complexity under limited resources and designing vessel navigation schedule plan under uncertain conditions within such extended mission planning time, therefore improves the mission quality as well. By optimizing trajectories with differential evolution and then visualizing them, we provide human-machine interaction for rapid knowledge discovery, data mining, and presentation of possibly large space satellite captured data sets (Big Data) analysis and exploitation.

In this paper a hybrid algorithm that monitors the voltage at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) and dispatches the optimal power from battery integrated micro grid is proposed. The proposed architecture integrates a rule based dispatch and a predictive optimization algorithm and ensures optimal power dispatch with minimum voltage variations at the PCC. The methodology and the algorithmic flowchart are discussed first and then the linked systems optimal power dispatch capability is assessed.

This paper presents a model-based distributed scheme with emphasis on the isolation of sensor faults in multi-zone heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. A bank of local sensor fault detection and isolation agents are designed to diagnose sensor faults in a HVAC system, modeled as a set of interconnected, nonlinear subsystems. Each agent consists of the local sensor fault detection and adaptive estimation scheme for isolation of sensor faults. Detection and isolation signals are generated based on analytical redundancy relations. These signals are provided to a local decision logic in order to distinguish between local and propagated sensor faults. Simulation results are used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology applied to a four-zone HVAC system. © 2015

This work examines the characteristic modes and measurement of a circular canonical family (CCF) of ad-hoc array topologies in which element radiators are used independently to deliver both sum and difference beams. We present a mathematical framework for the analysis of radiation characteristics from randomly distributed antenna arrays of the generalized circular topologies. Fourier probabilistic methods (i.e. characteristic function analyses) are applied to derive associated n-th order characteristic functions governing the radiation pattern. Sum and difference pattern behavior is generated using even and odd element distributions. Numerical simulations are performed using both ANSYS HFSS and MATLAB to demonstrate beam steering and examine the modal pattern characteristics. To validate our analytical approach, we include measured results of uniformly distributed array topologies, geometrically constrained to a set of 32 elements. Scanned patterns are provided for the sum-difference modes in both the E and H planes under lossless conditions. These are compared to theoretically-derived pattern behavior. The results demonstrate the utility of the CCF topology in generating radiation modes; because of this, applying the CCF in radar and electronic warfare technology will lead to greater performance such as enhanced target resolution and increased range capabilities.

The co-channel interference (CCI) is the principal factor of signal degradation in cellular networks, even more when a better frequency planning is required, because it results in a high-power CCI. On the other hand, the cooperative communication allows to create a virtual antenna array in order to obtain a diversity gain and combat the fading effects. In the present paper, the impact of a high-power CCI in a decode-and-forward (DF) wireless cooperative network using optimum combining (OC), K relays and N antennas at destination is analysed. Analytical expressions of average bit-error rate (BER) and upper bound for BPSK modulation are derived. It is proved that only one link is used to eliminate the high-power CCI, obtaining a diversity gain of N(K+1)−1.

This paper presents a fully-integrated Ka-band 4RX/4TX phased-array transceiver IC. The four transceiver channels are synchronized by an I/Q standing wave oscillator (SWO). Their signal phases are shifted by hybrid analog IF and LO phase interpolators, and can be controlled digitally and independently. The SWO further composes an on-chip PLL, and is locked to a 1.09 GHz off-chip global reference to scale to a large array at board level. Each receiver channel achieves 66 dB maximum conversion gain and 4.4 dB minimum noise figure. Each transmitter channel achieves 18 dBm maximum output power. The chip is mounted on a high-frequency laminate, inside which embedded cables connect its RF pads to Vivaldi antennas also inside the same PCB. With the PCB, each channel achieves 360° phase shifting capability under a maximum calibrated 3.7° phase errors. The PCB module presents successful beam steering with 23° measured four-channel 3-dB beamwidth. This chip consumes a peak 5 W power at transmit mode, and is fabricated in TSMC 65nm CMOS technology with a 4 × 2.5 mm2 chip area.

Structural Detectability Analysis of a Distributed Sensor Fault Diagnosis Scheme for a Class of Nonlinear systems

The objective of this work is to analyze the performance of the local monitoring modules of a distributed diagnosis scheme tailored to detect multiple sensor faults in a class of nonlinear systems. The local modules monitor the healthy operation of subsets of sensors (local sensor sets). Every module is designed to detect the occurrence of faults in the local sensor sets when some analytical redundancy relations (ARRs) are violated. The set of ARRs is formulated using structured residuals and adaptive thresholds based on a nonlinear observer. In order to characterize the sensitivity of every monitoring module to local sensor faults, we obtain structural fault detectability conditions based on adaptive thresholds, and strong fault detectability conditions based on ultimate robust positively invariant sets. These conditions correspond to explicit relationships between the local sensor faults, the worst-case bounds on modeling uncertainties and the design parameters of the local monitoring module. © 2015
