This is an evidence-based practice paper, intended to share a range of experiences managing data collection across multiple sites and offer recommendations for success. To address some of the broadest and most critical research questions, engineering education researchers are proposing more and more studies of engineering students, faculty, and/or administrators at multiple higher education institutions. Although some information about how to solicit participation from these institutions is shared through papers and presentations disseminating the activities, most of the best practices and accumulated wisdom about how to manage data collection across multiple sites is not widely shared. To remedy this, the authors synthesize their many years' experience coordinating data collection for engineering education research projects and address site selection, local contacts, recruiting, collaboration agreements, and IRB coordination. © American Society for engineering Education, 2016.

This paper presents an analysis of student survey responses after completion of three different laboratories, two physical laboratories and a virtual laboratory. Students' perceptions of the three different laboratory experiences are discussed from the focus of intended (metacognitive questions) and actual learning (cognitive questions). The student responses were coded by three researchers, the coding process was modified to increase the interrater reliability from around 0.7 to around 0.9 and was verified by two independent coders. Student perceptions about the laboratory experiences were also correlated to student performance in the class, as measured by the students' scores on all graded assessments for the course. Analysis of metacognitive statements of students show enhanced awareness of experimental design, and greater occurrences of critical thinking and higher order cognition in the virtual laboratories. These statements are consistent with the type of learning that has been previously measured for one of these virtual laboratories, particularly through a think aloud protocol that has been reported elsewhere. © American Society for engineering Education, 2009.

engineering and engineering technology departments have a long history of adapting to changing societal needs so that their graduates will possess relevant skills and knowledge vital to potential employers. In parallel with the changing engineering and engineering technology curriculum, there has also been a long-standing call to strengthen engineering and technology educators' capabilities and preparation to perform the task of educating students. This latter call, however, had remained virtually unanswered for more than a century. A recent response to this call is SPEED: Strengthening the Performance of engineering and engineering Technology Educators across the Disciplines. SPEED is a concept for a formal, nationally recognized continuing education program for engineering and technology educators being developed with the support of the ASEE. In the introductory part of this paper, the authors briefly present an overview of previous work which has led to the development of a vision for SPEED and its conceptual design. This overview includes comments on current professional development opportunities for faculty across the world, and the challenges, opportunities and critical elements that would be associated with a successful professional educational development program. We then offer a set of core competencies areas which would likely be required of faculty who finish such professional development. Finally, we conclude with some specifics about the proposed SPEED program. We offer some details on its current design and describe plans to engage relevant constituencies and create buy-in from the community. © American Society for engineering Education, 2010.

Academic dishonesty is nothing new, yet it is particularly disturbing to find among engineering students, whose professional lives need to be guided by the highest ethical standards. Moral philosophy may illuminate some of the conditions for recovering a sense of the ethical for engineering students. Classical moral philosophers held that people belong to communities in ways that inform their sense of obligation. Recognition of these communities would make concrete the engineer's responsibility for the health, safety and welfare of the public. A further difficulty is that the primary community that students know is simply that of their peers in school or the workplace, which does not form a sufficient context for the sense of moral obligation inherent in the engineer's role. This paper seeks to define the moral obligation of the engineer using traditional moral philosophy and describe how this obligation might be translated into a more positive definition of success. It will also address means by which educators can help engineering students to better understand their moral obligation. © 2004 IEEE.

ADVANCE at Utah State University (USU), is a five-year institutional transformation project to increase the advancement of women faculty in engineering. The project addresses problems that impact the effectiveness and satisfaction of all faculty members, specially women and underrepresented minorities. The ADVANCE team at Utah state found that administrative support and leadership is required to transform into accountability, support for the program at the faculty level, and awareness and training at all levels. ADVANCE is also working on other programs such as, part-time tenure track, clear communication and application of the tenure and promotion process, and the effect of family friendly policies to attract women engineering faculty.

engineering education research is a diverse, rapidly-evolving, international field in which scholars apply the methods of educational research to address a variety of issues pertaining to teaching and learning in engineering. As the field has grown, so has the need for a standardized terminology and an updated taxonomy to map and communicate research initiatives. Refining a U.S-centric taxonomy is the focus of this workshop. Participants will engage in activities to reflect on a draft taxonomy and offer suggestions to refine it. Participants are encouraged to bring a computer, and interested participants at any experience level are encouraged to join this dialogue.

Ethics education and the drive to produce ethical professional engineers is an important focus of one body of research on engineering education. This research often defines the positive outcome of ethics education as students and professional engineers choosing not to engage in unethical behavior. This paper discusses a portion of a larger research project and details efforts to identify and validate a definition of ethical behavior that includes the decision to engage in a positive behavior, defined as a service to a larger community. Through a series of interviews and focus groups with engineering administrators, faculty, and students, the authors attempt to confirm the construct validity of service participation as ethical behavior. They also investigate the validity of the aspects of service participation to be included as a part of a national survey on engineering ethics education practices and outcomes. They then discuss the final steps that will be taken to test and further validate the development of the service participation portion of the survey. ©2009 IEEE.

We present a novel automated laryngoscope system that leverages the computational capabilities of the NVIDIA Jetson Nano for automating throat scanning and accurately localizing vocal cords through imaging which enhances the success rates of endotracheal intubation. We introduced an artificial intelligence (AI) model effectively trained using a deep learning mechanism on the Jetson Nano platform. This model detects the vocal cords in real-time and guides the insertion of the laryngoscope and endotracheal tube. The development of conventional video laryngoscope was prompted by the significant failure rates associated with manual intubation. Through the automation of vocal cord localization and imaging, the system mitigates intubation risks, thereby enabling prompt and safer medical interventions. The in vitro experiment results conducted on Resusci Anne proved the potential application of technologies such as the Jetson Nano by enhancing the success rates of intubation procedures. By autonomously indicating the path to navigate the endotracheal tube toward the vocal cords, the system provides a progressive solution for the advancement of laryngoscopy techniques. © 2024 IEEE.

Visual programming utilizes visual presentation to describe programs, data, structures, or dynamic behavior of complex systems. Labview is a visual programming software made by national instruments using language based on graphics or block diagrams. Labview is applied to thermodynamic experiments to see the effectiveness of the implementation in students learning through the ISLE-based STEM approach. Experiments by the students were finding the specific heating value and discovering the concept of the Black principle by utilizing the Dallas 18B20 as a temperature sensor that is connected through the NodeMCU ESP8266 device and Labview software. This research was conducted at SMA LabSchool Unsyiah with a total of 10 students participated following the pandemic protocol procedure. The data analysis results showed that 85% of students were happy with the learning approach, 80% of students were interested in the teaching materials, 78% of students stated that the experiments were effective for learning the concepts, 90% of students stated that they developed thinking skills. Students get an increase in scores on the post-test as much as 89% from the results of the pre-test. The assessment of the implementation of learning by the observer obtained a mean of 80.5%. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Presently there is a need to develop more effective ways to integrate experimental design into the engineering curriculum. To address this need, we are developing virtual laboratories that provide students a capstone experience in which they can apply experimental design in a context similar to that of a practicing engineer in industry. In a virtual laboratory, simulations based on mathematical models implemented on a computer are used to replace the physical laboratory. However, as opposed to being constructed as a direct one-to-one replacement, the virtual laboratory is intended to complement the physical laboratories in the curriculum so that certain specific elements of the experimental design process are addressed. We have previously reported on the Virtual CVD Laboratory, a simulation of an industrial-scale chemical vapor deposition (CVD) reactor. Analogously to the Virtual CVD laboratory, a Virtual Bioreactor laboratory has been developed based on an industrial scale bioreactor process. The development, implementation and assessment of the Virtual Bioreactor in the senior laboratory in Chemical, Biological and Environmental engineering are discussed. Analysis of student surveys was undertaken to exam student metacognition of the virtual laboratory and compare their ideas of learning to the physical laboratories in the same course. Analysis shows that the experimental design, critical thinking and higher order cognition that are promoted in the Virtual CVD laboratory are manifest in the metacognitive statements of students in the Virtual BioR Laboratory. Both virtual laboratories are available for use upon request. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.
