Major volcanic eruptions(MVEs)have attracted increasing attention from the scientific *** studies have explored the climatic impact of MVEs over the past two ***,proxy-based reconstructions and climate model simulations indicate divergent responses of global and China’s regional climates to ***,we used multiple data from observations,reconstructions,simulations,and assimilations to summarize the historical facts of MVEs,the characteristics and mechanisms of their climatic impact,and directions for future *** reviewed volcanic datasets and determined intensive MVE periods;these periods corresponded to the years 530–700,1200‒1460,and 1600‒1840 *** tropical MVEs,a substantial cooling effect is observed throughout the globe and China on the interannual-interdecadal time scales but an inconsistent cooling magnitude is detected between reconstructions and *** the first summer after tropical MVEs,a decrease in global and monsoonal precipitation is *** reconstructions and simulations,an increased precipitation is seen for the Yangtze River Basin,while large uncertainties in precipitation changes are present for other regions of *** drought can be induced by frequent eruptions and volcanism superimposed on low solar irradiation and internal *** affect climate directly through the radiative effect and indirectly by modulating internal variability,such as the El Niño‒Southern Oscillation(ENSO)and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation(AMO).However,changes in the phase,amplitude,and periodicity of ENSO and AMO after MVEs and the associated mechanisms remain controversial,which could account for model-reconstruction ***,other internal variability,uncertainties in reconstruction methods and aerosol‒climate models,and climate background may also induce model-reconstruction *** gaps and directions for future research are also discussed.

Air Pollution poses significant environmental and health challenges, particularly in South Asia, including Bangladesh, over the past two decades. Therefore, this study examines the spatiotemporal variability of aerosols (PM2.5, PM10) and gaseous pollutants (CO, CO2, CH4, NO2, and SO2) during December 2021 and January 2022 in Dhaka (a major city in Bangladesh) using ground-based Aeroqual S500 data. Additionally, Pearson correlation, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and Hierarchy Cluster Analysis (HCA) were conducted to identify the main sources of aerosols and gaseous pollutants. From the spatiotemporal study, the highest pollutant concentrations were observed in Gulisthan (CO: 2.7 ppm), Abdullahpur (NO2: 6.1 ppm, PM10: 390 µg/m3), Gabtoli (PM2.5:232 µg/m3). Statistical analyses including Pearson correlations, PCA and HCA indicate that motor vehicle emissions, road traffic dust, and industrial activities are the primary sources of air pollution in Dhaka City. Calculated Air Quality Index (AQI) values ranged from 193 to 282 indicating unhealthy air quality levels. This study highlights the strong connection between poor air quality and health impacts including respiratory and cardiovascular illness exacerbated by elevated levels of PM2.5 and PM10 in Dhaka City, showing the severity of air pollution there. These findings underscore the urgent need for mitigation measures and effective air pollution control strategies. Policymakers, urban planners, and environmental agencies can leverage these insights to prioritize air pollution control measures, protecting public health and minimizing ecosystem damage. By addressing the root causes of air pollution, Dhaka can significantly enhance the well-being of its residents and reduce the burden of air pollution-related diseases.

An 2021-flood occurred in South Kalimantan Province caused severe moral and material losses, the destruction of nature, and weakened the wheel of the economy. Rapid identification of affected flood inundation areas spatially is essential for monitoring and assisting in the preparation of emergency responses. Spatial analysis of flood areas utilizes SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images because its wavelength is able to penetrate well through clouds or hazy atmosphere. This study utilizes Sentinel-1A level GRD (Ground Range Detect) - IW (Interferometric Wide Swath Mode) images with VV and VH polarization. We used Remote Sensing Change Detection (RDCD) method and then implemented a flood threshold. Flood event verification is obtained from the crowdsourcing report of flood events through social media. Results shows that 11 districts of South Kalimantan were affected by flooding, namely Balangan Regency (3,498 ha), Banjar (47,548 ha), Barito Kuala (37,530 ha), Hulu Sungai Selatan (9,939 ha), Hulu Sungai Tengah (9,789 ha), Hulu Sungai Utara (13,002.24 ha), Tabalong (4,876 ha), Tanah Laut (25,931 ha), Tapin (15,597 ha), Banjarbaru (2,812 ha) and Banjarmasin (6,570 ha).

Sponge cities, crucial components of urban eco-infrastructure, play a vital role in mitigating urban waterlogging, enhancing water resource management, and improving ecosystem resilience. However, the economic and ecosystem services benefits of low-impact development (LID) facilities in cities remain unclear. This study classified sponge city facilities as distinct subsectors within an input-output framework and develops a partial closure model to assess their economic and ecological impacts during construction and operation phases. Additionally, an ecological satellite account for carbon sinks, SS removal and water conservation is compiled to quantify the economic value of ecosystem services. Using Xining City's sponge city project as a case study, the findings reveal that the primary sector benefits most from water conservation (34.58 %), while government consumption (58.9 %) is the largest indirect beneficiary of suspended substance (SS) removal and carbon sequestration, reflecting the public good nature of environmental benefits. Sponge city construction stimulates economic activity, with total inputs exceeding four times the direct investment, driving growth in hidden sectors such as food processing, finance, and energy distribution. Additionally, the carbon sequestration from sponge city facilities offsets construction-related emissions within 4.07 years, though only 41.78 % of maintenance-phase emissions are balanced by carbon sinks, emphasizing the need for long-term sustainability measures. These results highlight sponge cities' unique role in economic restructuring, distinguishing them from traditional infrastructure. The study provides a framework for integrating ecological and economic indicators, supporting evidence-based urban planning and the transition toward a sustainable, eco-economic development model. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.

The recurrent extreme El Niño events are commonly linked to reduced vegetation growth and the land carbon sink over many but discrete regions of the Northern Hemisphere(NH).However,we reported here a pervasive and continuous vegetation greening and no weakened land carbon sink in the maturation phase of the 2015/2016 El Niño event over the NH(mainly in the extra-tropics),based on multiple evidences from remote sensing observations,global ecosystem model simulations and atmospheric CO_(2)*** discovered a significant compensation effect of the enhanced vegetation growth in spring on subsequent summer/autumn vegetation growth that sustained vegetation greening and led to a slight increase in the land carbon sink over the spring and summer of 2015(average increases of 23.34%and 0.63%in net ecosystem exchange from two independent datasets relative to a 5-years average before the El Niño event,respectively)and spring of 2016(6.82%),especially in the extra-tropics of the NH,where the water supply during the pre-growing-season(November of the previous year to March of the current year)had a positive *** seasonal compensation effect was much stronger than that in 1997 and 1998 and significantly alleviated the adverse impacts of the 2015/2016 El Niño event on vegetation growth during its maturation *** legacy effect of water supply during the pre-growing-season on subsequent vegetation growth lasted up to approximately six *** findings highlight the role of seasonal compensation effects on mediating the land carbon sink in response to episodic extreme El Niño events.

The adsorption layer system has shown great potential as a cost-effective and practical strategy for the recycling and management of excavated rocks containing potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Although this system has been employed in various civil engineering projects throughout Japan, its long-term performance to immobilize PTEs has rarely been investigated. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the adsorption layer system applied in an actual road embankment approximately 11 years after construction. The embankment system is comprised of a layer of excavated arsenic (As)-bearing mudstone built on top of a bottom adsorption layer mixed with an iron (Fe)-based adsorbent. Collection of undisturbed sample was carried out by implementing borehole drilling surveys on the embankment. Batch leaching experiments using deionized water and hydrochloric acid were conducted to evaluate the water-soluble and acid-leachable concentrations of As, Fe, and other coexisting ions. The leaching of As from the mudstone layer was likely induced by As desorption from Fe-oxides/oxyhydroxides naturally present under alkaline conditions, including the oxidation of framboidal pyrite, which was identified as a potential source of As. This was supported by electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) observations showing the presence of trace amounts of As in framboidal pyrite crystals. Arsenic leached from the mudstone layer was then immobilized by Fe oxyhydroxides found in the adsorption layer. Based on geochemical modeling and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results, leached As predominantly existed as the negatively charged HAsO42− oxyanion, which is readily sequestered by Fe oxyhydroxides. Moreover, the effectiveness of the adsorption layer was assessed and its lifetime was estimated, and the results revealed it still possessed enough capacity to adsorb As released from mudstone in the foreseeable future. The design and development of adsorbents with high efficiency, selectivity, and economy for Pb(II) are essential to environmental governance and ecological safety. Herein, an oxalic acid (OA) activated natural sepiolite (nSEP) composite for highly efficient Pb(II) removal was prepared by a facile impregnation strategy. The OA activated nSEP nanocomposite (OA-nSEP) was characterized by various instrumental techniques and its adsorption performance towards Pb(II) was further evaluated through a series of static and dynamic experiments under various environmental conditions. Results revealed that OA reacted with the calcium impurities in nSEP to form calcium oxalate, causing mesoporous structure and larger specific surface area of OA-nSEP. The obtained OA-nSEP possessed super high Pb(II) adsorption capacities (858.4–1252 mg/g), which were much higher than that of most modified clays or conventional materials. The average adsorption site energy and the standard deviation of the site energy distribution were analyzed to investigate the strength of Pb(II) binding onto OA-nSEP and the adsorption site heterogeneity. Mechanism studies confirmed that oxalate groups exerted a primary role in the adsorption process. X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) unveiled that the coordination of oxalate with Pb(II) and precipitation of lead oxalate was responsible for the high efficiency and selectivity. Distinguishing feature of high adsorption capacity, specific selective adsorption, abundant availability, and splendid reusability make the OA-nSEP a promising candidate for eliminating Pb(II) in practical scenarios. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Jakarta bay is a water with high input load due to activities from the surrounding river estuaries comes from Jabodetabek regions. This activity impacts the availability of Total Suspended Matter (TSM) in Jakarta Bay. The problem comes when the concentration of TSM exceeds the carrying capacity of the water thus encouraging plankton to grow and breed rapidly which has caused eutrophication. This research has three objectives: (1) Analyzing the relationship of TSM and Chlorophyll-a Case 2 (CHL2), (2) Analyzing impacts between sea current with CHL2 distribution, and (3) Analyzing correlation CHL2 distribution with fish catch data. Data collection was conducted on January 2018 until December 2018. Monthly TSM and CHL2 data were obtained through GlobColour data, monthly data on sea currents were obtained through Marine Copernicus data. TSM and CHL2 data were processed using the GIS and time series method to determine distribution area. Furthermore, a regression analysis is used to determine the relationship of TSM and CHL2. The result: Relationship of TSM and CHL2 obtained R = 0,8508 so that there is a strong association between TSM and CHL2;the current pattern in the Jakarta bay strongly affected by monsoon wind, the highest distribution occurs in the NWM, evenly distribution occurs in the transition 1, and SEM, the lowest distribution occurs in the transition 2;the demersal and pelagic fish catch period occurs in the end of transition 2 period where high CHL2 concentration and low sea current velocity make it easier for fishermen to catch the fish. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

One new ionone glycoside, named centrantheroside F (), together with 9 known compounds (-), were isolated from the roots of . Their structures were determined by spectroscopic data analyses and comparing with the literature data. The absolute configuration of was confirmed via 2 D NMR and electronic circular dichroism (ECD). All isolated compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory activity on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide (NO) production.

Enhancing flotation separation of marmatite and pyrrhotite via the synergistic activation of marmatite by Cu 2+ and EDP

Marmatite is of poor floatability and difficult to be activated, making its challenging to separate marmatite from pyrrhotite effectively. In this study, we successfully utilized the combined ethylenediamine phosphate (EDP) and Cu 2+ to facilitate the activation of marmatite and achieved its selective separation from pyrrhotite, while the synergistic activation mechanism was uncovered. Single mineral flotation results confirmed that the presence of EDP could enhance the activation effect of Cu 2+ towards marmatite, and their synergetic activation promoted the flotation separation of marmatite and pyrrhotite in the mixed mineral flotation systems. Contact angle analysis indicated that the combined activator rendered better hydrophobicity to marmatite than single Cu 2+ or EDP. Under the interaction between Cu 2+ and EDP, more active substances were generated on marmatite, which directly making surface became much rougher, besides, these substances could induce more BX adsorption in subsequent. Meanwhile, the adsorption strengthen of BX was enhanced by their synergistic effect. SEM-EDS results further confirmed that the active substances were copper-ammonium complexes because Cu and N coexisted in the densely distributed aggregates. Eventually, XPS revealed the low-activity Cu(II) was transferred to high-activity Cu(I), and ions exchange between Cu and Zn was also included in the synergistic activation mechanism.
