center for Innovation through visualization and simulation (CIVS) at Purdue University Calumet (PUC) is a multidisciplinary center that combines advanced simulation techniques with 3-D visualization and virtual reality (VR) technologies. Through research, education, and external partnerships, it is the mission of CIVS to engage in activities that foster innovation in a variety of fields through the use of simulation and visualization technologies. The center emphasizes the application of state-of-the-art technologies to address complex problems and promote innovation in areas such as economic development, energy, environment, education and training, healthcare, medicine, manufacturing, security and daily life. Research activities at CIVS are interdisciplinary in nature with collaborations across departments, universities, and countries. Current major research activities include: • Integration of VR with simulation technologies • Application of simulation and visualization technologies to industrial processes for process/product design, control and optimization to address the issues of productivity, energy, environment, and quality (PEEQ). • Development of advanced learning environments in virtual reality for training and education Integration of VR with simulation provides a fantastic technology for the design and optimization of industrial processes. It allows overview of all the data and close examination of specific data points;sharing insights about complex phenomena among non-experts;empowering people to work collaboratively and intuitively;reducing design time for better solutions;enabling engineers to design, analyze, revise their designs and watch as those changes take effect in the virtual model;and training students, engineers and operators. A number of applications to steel industry such as blast furnace, mixer tank, preheating furnace will be presented.

The inherent inability to obtain real-time quality measurements in calcined kilns poses significant challenges for maintaining optimal production stability. This research introduces an intelligent control method for calcined kiln product quality, leveraging a multivariable integrated deep learning model to predict and regulate quality by manipulating production actuators. A feature screening process was conducted by combining grey relative correlation, feature extraction was performed using Time Series Convolutional model, quality classification was carried out by Support Vector Machine model, and the GTS model was constructed to predict the quality of the calcined kiln product. An intelligent fuzzy control system was established to fine-tune operational parameters based on quality forecasts, with the goal of direct quality. Experimental validation using industrial furnace data demonstrates the effectiveness of the model, achieving 87.55 % prediction accuracy, and confirms the operational viability of the control strategy. This study provides a scientific approach to managing calcining kiln quality, enhancing production efficiency and facilitating the implementation of intelligent control in calcining operations.

Most football simulators available use computer simulation to mimic football motion in a virtual environment. These kinds of simulations, while fun and interactive, are primarily for entertainment rather than as a training tool. In this paper, we present a virtual training system for football kicking based on computer sensing and football impact dynamics using real-time wireless feedback. It is designed as a computer-assisted training system that will give a kicker the ability to practice off the field and receive the detailed feedback comparable yet more quantitative than they would experience at a training camp. In addition, it enables football coaches with quantitative data to design player-specific training program for kickers in order to achieve a goal with more precision. The system includes a force-sensing panel to determine the position and velocity as initial data, real-time wireless feedback to calibrate the football kicking dynamics model, and an advanced visualization environment designed to recreate the realistic atmosphere of all major football stadiums. The system has been designed and tested in a lab environment. The preliminary results show that the wireless signal is sensitive enough to detect football positions on the fly. The data collected in real-time can be used to calibrate the football dynamics model in predicting the final position of the football with respect to the field goal, which is visualized using 3D stereoscopic technology.
