In grid workflow systems, to verify fixed-time constraints efficiently at the run-time execution stage, some checkpoints are often selected so that we only need to conduct the fixed-time constraint verification at such checkpoints rather than at all activity points. However, the existing typical checkpoint selection strategies are inefficient and/or ineffective because they may incur some unnecessary verification by selecting some unnecessary checkpoints or omit some necessary verification by omitting some necessary checkpoints. Therefore, in this paper, based on the run-time activity completion duration, we develop a new checkpoint selection strategy that is more efficient and effective than the existing typical checkpoint selection strategies. The final comparison and quantitative evaluation further demonstrate this point.

In HEV different electrical systems are functionally interconnected, requiring exchange of information accurately within defined communication latency. This paper describes implementation methodologies of efficient distributed real time control hardware and software for series HEV with CAN interface. DSP based embedded controller structure and data flows for different phases of HEV operation are detailed.

Service workflow management which consolidates multiple services to achieve business goals has become a critical issue in service-oriented computing. Due to the unique feature of service workflows such as full distribution and high dynamicity, the contemporary workflow technology has exhibited inefficiency, vulnerability, inflexibility and lack of adaptability. Based upon the authors' previous work on peer-to-peer based workflow management and seamless integration of agents and Web services, this paper innovatively presents SwinDeW-A which is a decentralised service workflow management framework based on peer-to-peer and agent technologies. Based on this framework, this paper also discusses how autonomous service level agreement negotiation, decentralised process enactment, and autonomous process adaptation can be achieved. The proposed approach takes advantages of the peer-to-peer computingtechnology and the agent technology to provide more efficient, reliable, flexible and adaptive service workflow management.

SwinDeW, a novel peer-to-peer based decentralised workflow, has been upgraded to SwinDeW-S, which supports Web service deployments and enactments to enhance system openness. To specify business process semantics, descriptions of input, output, precondition and effects, traditional workflow definition languages, such as extended XPDL, which was used in SwinDeW, have become insufficient. Even new service-oriented business process languages, such as BPEL4WS, are unable to support the full description of service profile either. In this paper, we propose a new framework based on OWLS, a semantic Web ontology language that leverages service discovery, invocation and coordination more effectively.

COST – the acronym for European COoperation in Science and technology – is the oldest and widest European intergovernmental network for cooperation in - search. Established by the Ministerial Conference in November 1971, COST is presently used by the scientific communities of 35 European countries to coop- ate in common research projects supported by national funds. The funds provided by COST – less than 1% of the total value of the projects – support the COST cooperation networks (COST Actions) through which, with € 30 million per year, more than 30,000 European scientists are involved in - search having a total value which exceeds € 2 billion per year. This is the financial worth of the European added value which COST achieves. A “bottom up approach” (the initiative of launching a COST Action comes from the European scientists themselves), “à la carte participation” (only countries interested in the Action participate), “equality of access” (participation is open also to the scientific communities of countries not belonging to the European - ion) and “flexible structure” (easy implementation and light management of the research initiatives) are the main characteristics of COST.
