The Grab and Glue discrete event simulation (Grab-and-Glue) framework has been proposed for several years. This paper investigates the feasibility of this framework. A simulation model of a single server queuing system is constructed by following the Grab-and-Glue framework as a ubiquitous example. Different scissions are grabbed from the Web or programming textbooks, and glued together using JBuilder5. The potential of Grab-and-Glue is discussed as well as the current challenges of constructing Grab-and-Glue simulation models. Some critiques and recommendations for the ongoing research on constructing simulation models based on the Grab-and-Glue framework have also been proposed.

We present a critique of the current teaching practices of simulation. We challenge the current view of simulation, to the extent that most textbooks' contents will be found to be secondary to the missing necessary primary material. We advocate that (simulation) education has four general objectives, which are to teach students how to learn, how to think creatively, how to problem solve, and how to be professionals. These four objectives of education may not be possible to teach. In the words of Oscar Wilde, "Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught". So an education in simulation requires that students be put into learning situations that enable them to learn the requisite knowledge concerning the four objectives.

The Generic Runtime Infrastructure for Distributed simulation (GRIDS) has been developed to investigate modularity issues in distributed simulation. It could be argued that although the HLA RTI is a widespread solution to distributed simulation, it cannot include all possible services. This paper investigates an approach to extending the distributed simulation services available in the HLA RTI. One example of this is bridging support for HLA/DIS legacy integration. This paper therefore presents GRIDS, how GRIDS can be used to provide modular service support for the HLA RTI, and a case study on legacy integration to demonstrate our approach.

The emergence of new technologies in simulation modeling such as the World Wide Web has fostered debate on the reuse of models. We present a case for model reuse and the pot of gold that it promises. We then discuss model reuse from the viewpoint of simulation modelers who use COTS simulation packages and suggest that model reuse may in fact cost more than developing new models as candidates for reuse as trust must be established through thorough testing. An alternative to this is put forward that suggests that a Grab-and-Glue, Run, Reject, Reply (G/sup 2/R/sup 3/) approach is a more appropriate use of model reuse as it emphasizes the intellectual process of problem understanding rather than model correctness as a means to itself.

simulation optimization is rapidly becoming a mainstream tool for simulation practitioners, as several simulation packages include add-on optimization tools. We are concentrating on an automated optimization approach that is based on adapting model parameters in order to handle uncertainty that arises from stochastic elements of the process under study. We particularly investigate the use of global search methods in this context, as these methods allow the optimization strategy to escape from sub-optimal (i.e., local) solutions and, in that sense, they improve the efficiency of the simulation optimization process. The paper compares several global search methods and demonstrates the successful application of the Particle Swarm Optimizer to simulation modeling optimization and design of a steelworks plant, a representative example of the stochastic and unpredictable behavior of a complex discrete event simulation model.

Supply chain management (SCM) is a series of activities, usually sequential, that an organisation, or a network of organisations, uses to deliver products and/or services to customers. With the globalisation of commercial markets, distributed supply chain (DSQ) simulation, connecting organisations from various parts of the world, has gained significance in supply chain management decision support. DSC simulation requires that information be transferred between individual simulations (interoperability) in a timely and consistent manner. In this work GRIDS (Generic Runtime Infrastructure for Distributed simulation), an extensible, service-based RTI, is used to successfully transfer timely information between simulations. However, the question of what format this information should take still remains. This paper presents the development of an Object Exchange Model Template (OEMT), for DSC simulation in GRIDS. These are templates for standard object creation within a DSC simulation, so as to facilitate standard object transfers between the various simulations that compose a DSC simulation. The templates are stored in an Object Exchange Model Repository (OEMR) for easy access by all simulation builders intending to build a DSC simulation using GRIDS. The OEMT facilitates interoperability by providing a common "language" that can be used to share information (objects) between simulations. This approach can also facilitate data distribution management (DDM) services. The OEMT is intended to extend and complement the OMT of the High Level Architecture.

Health care systems are known to be quite complex in structure and operation. The technology of liver transplantation is one of the aspects of health care systems that has always been difficult to grasp. The main problem with liver transplantation is the fact that it is not easy to study using traditional quantitative tools. The paper demonstrates the use of discrete event simulation as an explorative tool to help stakeholders to understand the behavior of the system so that they can achieve informed decisions with regard to the prioritization of patients waiting for transplantation. The paper also shows the construction of a tailor-made package (LiverSim) and provides an example of how this package is used by the stakeholders to assist in the evaluation process. Some final lessons are drawn that simulation helps in exploring more issues outside the boundaries of quantitative results.

The use of simulation in the healthcare area is not widespread when compared with other areas. The paper suggests that traditional approaches to modeling may not fully utilize simulation for tackling healthcare problems. Healthcare systems are often complex with multiple decision makers. A modeling approach is proposed which enhances stakeholders' understanding and intercommunications. The structure of this approach is participative, including the stakeholders. The behavior of the approach is iterative rather than step-based. An example is given showing how this approach is used for facilitating the modeling process. It is found that involving stakeholders throughout the modeling process helps them understand their problem, coupled with more appreciation for findings from the model. This process is also found to be useful in enhancing stakeholder intercommunication.

Over the past years, there has been a growth in simulation courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. A discrete event simulation course, as with any non-basic course, has some prerequisites that must be satisfied by students before attending classes. Statistics, computer programming and modeling are the most important, together with knowledge on the specific field being simulated (manufacturing, logistics, etcetera). Are students sufficiently prepared to follow a course on simulation? This work is related to the construction, application and analysis of an assessment instrument to evaluate student prerequisite knowledge for a discrete event simulation course. The proposed questionnaire was given to the 5/sup th/ year engineering students at the beginning of our first year (72 hours) discrete event simulation introductory course at Maua School of Engineering. The results obtained show the importance of making an assessment evaluation in order to improve the quality of simulation learning.

Amongst the majority of work done in supply chain simulation, papers have emerged that examine the area of model distribution. The executions of simulations on distributed hosts as a coupled model require both coordination and facilitating infrastructure. A distributed environment, the Generic Runtime Infrastructure for Distributed simulation (GRIDS) is suggested to provide the bonding requirements for such a model. The advantages of transparently connecting the distributed components of a supply chain simulation allow the construction of a conceptual simulation while releasing the modeler from the complexities of the underlying network. The infrastructure presented demonstrates scalability without losing flexibility for future extensions based on open industry standards.
