Nowadays the size and complexity of models is growing more and more, forcing modelers to face some problems that they were not accustomed to. Before trying to study ways to deal with complex models, a more important and primary question to explore is, is there any means to avoid the generation of complex models? The primary purpose of this paper is to discuss several issues regarding the complexity of simulation models, summarizing the findings in this area so far, and calling attention to this area that, despite its importance, appears to remain at the bottom of simulation research agendas.

This paper demonstrates the use of simulation in an evaluative study for the technology of liver transplantation from the cost-effectiveness point of view. This study is conducted in the United Kingdom where there are no explicit guidelines for the prioritization of patients waiting for transplantation. Another objective of the model is to enable health economists to understand the technology of liver transplantation and evaluate alternative policies for prioritizing patients in the waiting list. The paper shows the construction of a tailor-made package (LiverSim) and provides an example of how this package is used by the stakeholders to assist in the evaluation process. Some final lessons are drawn that simulation helps in exploring more issues outside the boundaries of quantitative results.

Bandwidth consumption in distributed real time simulation, or networked real time simulation, is a major problem as the number of participants and the sophistication of joint simulation exercises grow in size. The paper briefly reviews distributed real time simulation and bandwidth reduction techniques and introduces the Generic Runtime Infrastructure for Distributed simulation (GRIDS) as a research architecture for studying such problems. GRIDS uses Java abstract classes to promote distributed services called thin agents, a novel approach to implementing distributed simulation services, such as user defined bandwidth reduction mechanisms, and to distributing the executable code across the simulation. Thin agents offer the advantages of traditional agents without the overhead imposed by mobility or continuous state, which are unnecessary in this context. We present our implementation and some predicted results from message reduction studies using thin agents.

The paper presents simulation modeling as a decision support technique and suggests that it can be a useful for understanding problems related to health care, randomized clinical trials in this case. The paper shows that simulation may not be regarded as a tool for deriving solutions to certain problems. In fact simulation is better suited for understanding the problem and enhancing systematic debate between the problem owners. The paper also demonstrates the usefulness of combining different software to provide a comprehensive tailor-made package (ABCSim). The linear move and exchange move optimization (LEG) is an algorithm based on a simulated annealing algorithm (SA), a relatively recent algorithm for solving hard combinatorial optimization problems. The LEO algorithm was successfully applied to a facility layout problem, a scheduling problem and a line balancing problem. We try to apply the LEO algorithm to the problem of optimizing a manufacturing simulation model, based on a steelworks plant. This paper also demonstrates the effectiveness and versatility of this algorithm. We compare the search effort of this algorithm with a genetic algorithm (GA) implementation of the same problem.

One dominating view of simulation, especially when graphical methods or notations are used to construct simulations, is that of transaction flow. This paper identifies six behavioral patterns that highlight problems with this view. An object-oriented method of constructing simulations is introduced which consists of embedding simulation entities in "yokes", which can be thought of as reified contracts.
