In recent years, AI-based software engineering has progressed from pre-trained models to advanced agentic workflows, with software Development Agents representing the next major leap. These agents, capable of reasoning, planning, and interacting with external environments, offer promising solutions to complex software engineering tasks. However, while much research has evaluated code generated by large language models (LLMs), comprehensive studies on agent-generated patches, particularly in real-world settings, are lacking. This study addresses that gap by evaluating 4,892 patches from 10 top-ranked agents on 500 real-world GitHub issues from SWE-Bench Verified, focusing on their impact on code quality. Our analysis shows no single agent dominated, with 170 issues unresolved, indicating room for improvement. Even for patches that passed unit tests and resolved issues, agents made different file and function modifications compared to the gold patches from repository developers, revealing limitations in the benchmark's test case coverage. Most agents maintained code reliability and security, avoiding new bugs or vulnerabilities; while some agents increased code complexity, many reduced code duplication and minimized code smells. Finally, agents performed better on simpler codebases, suggesting that breaking complex tasks into smaller sub-tasks could improve effectiveness. This study provides the first comprehensive evaluation of agent-generated patches on real-world GitHub issues, offering insights to advance AI-driven software development.

Autonomous Vehicle (AV) usage has become predominant in the rapidly evolving landscape of urban transportation. Integrating AVs and non-AVs in the existing traffic infrastructure has significantly increased the complexity of traffic patterns. This research work primes the enhanced Traffic Management System (e-TMS), a solution implemented to expedite Emergency Vehicle (EV) travel in the context of Connected AVs (CAVs) and ensured secured communication employing Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) among the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) framework. When an EV is detected, the IoV system verifies the EV's signal using PKI, ensuring its authenticity and integrity by encrypting the communication between the EV and Road Side Units (RSUs). Further, the e-TMS activates the platooning process where CAVs in the EV's lane shift to the adjacent lanes and dynamically form platoons to create a dedicated lane for the EV. To further optimize the platooning process, an Adaptive Smart Leader Selection (ASLS) algorithm is employed to select a leader vehicle spontaneously among the AVs based on the proximity to the EV, communication reliability, and lane position. Radio Detection and Ranging devices aid this platooning process by providing distance and target velocity, which are needed to maintain the required distance between the AVs and ensure safe platoon formation. The e-TMS enhances EV response times and overall traffic flow efficiency and resulted in 27.8% increase in mean speed compared to the traditional methods. © 2014 IEEE.

A prerequisite to implementing virtualization-aware security solutions is to solve the "semantic gap" problem. Current approaches require a deep knowledge of the kernel data to manually solve the semantic gap. However, kernel data is very complex;an Operating System (OS) kernel contains thousands of data structures that have direct and indirect (pointer) relations between each other with no explicit integrity constraints. This complexity makes it impractical to use manual methods. In this paper, we present a new solution to systematically and efficiently solve the semantic gap for any OS, without any prior knowledge of the OS. We present: (i) KDD, a tool that systematically builds a precise kernel data definition for any C-based OS such as Windows and Linux. KDD generates this definition by performing points-to analysis on the kernel's source code to disambiguate the pointer relations. (ii) SVA, a security appliance that solves the semantic gap based on the generated definition, to systematically and externally map the virtual machines' physical memory and extract the runtime dynamic objects. We have implemented prototypes for KDD and SVA, and have performed different experiments to prove their effectiveness. © 2012 IEEE.

New security threats arise frequently and impact on enterprise software security requirements. However, most existing security engineering approaches focus on capturing and enforcing security requirements at design time. Many do not address how a system should be adapted to cope with new unanticipated security requirements that arise at runtime. We describe a new approach - Model Driven Security engineering at Runtime (MDSE@R) - enabling security engineers to dynamically specify and enforce system security requirements based on current needs. We introduce a new domain-specific visual language to model customer security requirements in a given application. Moreover, we introduce a new UML profile to help capturing system architectural characteristics along with security specifications mapped to system entities. Our MDSE@R toolset supports refinement and merger of these visual models and uses model-driven engineering to take the merged model and specify security controls to be enforced on the target system components. A combination of interceptors (via generated configurations) and injected code (using aspect-oriented programming) are used to integrate the specified security controls within the target system. We describe MDSE@R, give an example of using it in securing an ERP system, describe its implementation, and discuss an evaluation of applying MDSE@R on a set of open source applications. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Multi-tenancy helps service providers to save costs, improve resource utilization, and reduce service customization and maintenance time by sharing of resources and services. On the other hand, supporting multi-tenancy adds more complexity to the shared application's required capabilities. Security is a key requirement that must be addressed when engineering new SaaS applications or when re-engineering existing applications to support multi-tenancy. Traditional security (re)engineering approaches do not fit with the multi-tenancy application model where tenants and their security requirements emerge after the system was first developed. Enabling, runtime, adaptable and tenant-oriented application security customization on single service instance is a key challenging security goal in multi-tenant application engineering. In this paper we introduce TOSSMA, a Tenant-Oriented SaaS Security Management Architecture. TOSSMA allows service providers to enable their tenants in defining, customizing and enforcing their security requirements without having to go back to application developers for maintenance or security customizations. TOSSMA supports security management for both new and existing systems. Service providers are not required to write security integration code to use a specific security platform or mechanism. In this paper, we describe details of our approach and architecture, our prototype implementation of TOSSMA, give a usage example of securing a multi-tenant SaaS, and discuss our evaluation experiments of TOSSMA. © 2012 IEEE.

It is very challenging to verify the integrity of Operating System (OS) kernel data because of its complex layout. In this paper, we address the problem of systematically generating an accurate kernel data definition for OSes without any prior knowledge of the OS kernel data. This definition accurately reflects the kernel data layout by resolving the pointer-based relations ambiguities between kernel data, in order to support systemic kernel data integrity checking. We generate this definition by performing static points-to analysis on the kernel's source code. We have designed a new points-to analysis algorithm and have implemented a prototype of our system. We have performed several experiments with real-world applications and OSes to prove the scalability and effectiveness of our approach for OS security applications. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Cloud computing can provide virtually unlimited scalable high performance computing resources. Cloud workflows often underlie many large scale data/computation intensive e-science applications such as earthquake modelling, weather forecasting and astrophysics. During application modelling, these sophisticated processes are redesigned as cloud workflows, and at runtime, the models are executed by employing the supercomputing and data sharing ability of the underlying cloud computing infrastructures. Temporal QOS Management in Scientific Cloud Workflow systems focuses on real world scientific applications which often must be completed by satisfying a set of temporal constraints such as milestones and deadlines. Meanwhile, activity duration, as a measurement of system performance, often needs to be monitored and controlled. This book demonstrates how to guarantee on-time completion of most, if not all, workflow applications. Offering a comprehensive framework to support the lifecycle of time-constrained workflow applications, this book will enhance the overall performance and usability of scientific cloud workflow systems.

Web caching has been recognized as an effective approach to improve performance by storing frequently-accessed documents from originating servers at storage sites "closer" to requesting clients in order to reduce the load on the network bandwidth which in turn can reduce user response time. In this paper, we examine the performance of various architectures for cache cooperation in a web environment. The architectures under consideration include: distributed, hierarchical, and a hybrid of the two. A hierarchical web caching architecture utilizes a series of caches placed at different levels of the network (i.e. client, institutional, regional, and national) and user requests are satisfied at the lowest level possible (the first one that stores the desired document). Distributed web caching incorporates multiple cooperating caches all at the same level. The hybrid approach chosen in this paper contains a hierarchy of distributed caches in the hopes of exploiting advantages from both distributed and hierarchical caching. Using simulation as the tool, we compare the performance (mean response time, overall cache hit rates) of these architectures under a variety of different scenarios in an attempt to identify the conditions under which each is beneficial. Web caching has been determined to be an effective technique to improve performance in a Web-based environment. An increasing proportion of documents delivered over the Internet are becoming dynamic in nature in that the content presented is time-sensitive or it has been tailored for specific clients. Thus a request for such a Web page may not be satisfied by a page in a Web cache as its content is stale (out-of-date or not applicable to this user). The net effect is that dynamic content Web pages can be detrimental to the performance of a Web caching system as requests for these pages must be satisfied by fetching the page from the originating server. In this paper, we examine the effect of dynamic content on a partitioned and unified Web caching system. In partitioned Web caching, storage space is divided into two areas where one area is designated for large files (such as audio and video) while the other area is utilized for small files (such as images and text). Using simulation as the tool, the effect of dynamic content web pages will be examined in a partitioned as well as a unified (non-partitioned) caching environment. As dynamic kernel runtime objects are a significant source of security and reliability problems in Operating systems (OSes), having a complete and accurate understanding of kernel dynamic data layout in memory becomes crucial. In this paper, we address the problem of systemically uncovering all OS dynamic kernel runtime objects, without any prior knowledge of the OS kernel data layout in memory. We present a new hybrid approach to uncover kernel runtime objects with nearly complete coverage, high accuracy and robust results against generic pointer exploits. We have implemented a prototype of our approach and conducted an evaluation of its efficiency and effectiveness. To demonstrate our approach's potential, we have also developed three different proof-of-concept OS security tools using it. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
