In the rapidly evolving field of machine learning, training models with datasets from various locations and organizations presents significant challenges due to privacy and legal concerns. The exploration of effective collaborative training settings, which are capable of leveraging valuable knowledge from distributed and isolated datasets, is increasingly *** study investigates key factors that impact the effectiveness of collaborative training methods in code next-token prediction, as well as the correctness and utility of the generated code, showing the promise of such methods. Additionally, we evaluate the memorization of different participant training data across various collaborative training settings, including centralized, federated, and incremental training, showing their potential risks in leaking data. Our findings indicate that the size and diversity of code datasets are pivotal factors influencing the success of collaborative trained code models. We demonstrate that federated learning achieves competitive performance compared to centralized training while offering better data protection, as evidenced by lower memorization ratios in the generated code. However, federated learning can still produce verbatim code snippets from hidden training data, potentially violating data privacy or copyright. Our study further explores the patterns of effectiveness and memorization in incremental learning, emphasizing the importance of the sequence in which individual participant datasets are introduced. Also, we identify the memorization phenomenon of cross-organizational clones as a prevalent challenge in both centralized and federated learning scenarios. Our findings highlight the persistent risk of data leakage during inference, even when training data remains unseen. We conclude with strategic recommendations for practitioners and researchers to optimize the use of multisource datasets, thereby propelling the cross-organizational collaboration forward. Cop

Model transformations are an important part of Model Driven engineering (MDE). To generate a transformation with current MDE approaches, users are required to specify (or provide) complex meta-models and then engage in quite low-level coding in textual transformation scripting languages. This paper introduces a new approach to visualising source and target models that allows specifiers of complex data transformations to use the resultant visual notations for specifying transformations by example using drag and drop. We demonstrate the applicability of our new approach by an example case study.

The Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud computing model has become a compelling computing solution with a proven ability to reduce costs and improve resource efficiency. Virtualization has a key role in supporting the IaaS model. However, virtualization also makes it a target for potent rootkits because of the loss of control problem over the hosted Virtual Machines (VMs). This makes traditional in-guest security solutions, relying on operating system kernel trustworthiness, no longer an effective solution to secure the virtual infrastructure of the IaaS model. In this paper, we explore briefly the security problem of the IaaS cloud computing model, and present CloudSec, a new virtualization-aware monitoring appliance that provides active, transparent and real-time security monitoring for hosted VMs in the IaaS model. CloudSec utilizes virtual machine introspection techniques to provide fine-grained inspection of VM's physical memory without installing any monitoring code inside the VM. It actively reconstructs and monitors the dynamically changing kernel data structures instances, as a prior step to enable providing protection for kernel data structures. We have implemented a proof-of-concept prototype using VMsafe libraries on a VMware ESX platform. We have evaluated the system monitoring accuracy and the performance overhead of CloudSec.

There is an emerging focus on real-time data stream analysis on mobile devices. While many mobile data stream mining algorithms have been developed in recent times, generic and scalable visualization techniques have not been presented. This paper presents the demonstration of our innovative clutter-adaptive cluster visualization technique for mobile devices. We have fully implemented this technique on the Google Android platform and provide demonstrations for different datasets: location (both real and synthetic), and stock-market (real).

Global software engineering (GSE) teams face challenges due to the need to replace traditional physical presence interactions and co-ordination with computer-mediated means. A vast majority of the available tool support for distributed collaboration is deep-seated in a desktop metaphor introduced in the `70s, and huge efforts are being devoted to overcome its known limitations. Over the last few years we have looked into the feasibility of providing an approach based on Activity-Based computing (ABC) to address these issues in a novel way. We have developed a middleware and support tool, ABC4GSD, to enable collaborative distributed features in an application, while maintaining common interactions with the workstation that users are accustomed to. In this paper we present the results of a user evaluation we conducted on ABC4GSD using exemplar GSE scenarios. Participants' responses show positive and encouraging reception of the activity-based approach to supporting GSE.

Design of a web-based thesaurus for systems of systems engineering (SoSE) discipline is presented in this article. Due to lack of linguistic clarity within this emerging discipline, there is a strong need to represent and interpret SoS concepts and terms to align heterogeneous models, and tools and techniques developed for SoS operations, management and its governance. A Blackboard-based systems approach is therefore used to devise a model, providing a mechanism for high level organisation and sharing of knowledge and information within the SoSE thesaurus system. To illustrate its applicability, a scenario derived from realistic use cases is provided. The potential benefits of this research are identified and a brief description of intended further work is given.

Activity recognition focuses on inferring current user activities by leveraging sensory data available on today's sensor rich environment. Supervised learning has been applied pervasively for activity recognition. Typical activity recognition techniques process sensory data based on point-by-point approaches. In this paper, we propose a novel Cluster Based Classification for Activity Recognition systems, CBARS. The novel approach processes activities as clusters to build a robust classification framework. CBARS integrates supervised, unsupervised and active learning and applies hybrid similarity measures technique for recognising activities. Extensive experimental results using real activity recognition dataset have evidenced that our new approach shows improved performance over other existing state-of-the-art learning methods. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

The notion of a metaverse seems hard to define but encourages the impression that it can be considered as a new virtual metaphysical landscape that somehow goes beyond our geographical locations and understanding (i.e., independent of time and space). Based on virtual reality, augmented reality, and blockchain, it is envisioned as an independent but extended world that is planned to be a digital virtuality entrenched not only in our old habits such as gaming and entertainment but also in virtual asset trade. In particular, trading is a pillar of the virtual economy, and auction houses will be crucial for Metaverse trading. This exploratory study examines the possibility of using an auction environment to improve the trading capabilities in a virtual universe. We investigate the cases of creating a virtual auction house with the potential of social trading of virtual assets with crypto coins and bartering. To this end, we built a virtual auction house and tested it initially using a set of scenarios. Our preliminary findings suggest that creating a virtual trading environment would be beneficial as an environment for buying and selling virtual assets and exploring their consequences. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Supporting adaptive real-time mobile communication with multilayer context awareness

Real time mobile communication is challenging due to the inherent limitations of mobile networks. On the other hand the stringent quality of service requirements of real time traffic is highly in demand. Our first contribution is the generic context aware architecture for adaptive real time applications. Adaptation is based on the awareness of context parameters from different layers of the existing protocol stack which involves context exchange among the neighboring layers as well as non-neighboring layers. The architecture comprises of context representation, context acquisition, cross-layer context exchange and context management. Our second contribution is the mobility aware, adaptive Multi-homed Mobile IP. Simulation of adaptive M-MIP was carried out as a proof of concept. Simulation demonstrated that adaptation to mobility was able to decrease Mobile IP handover latency. Further, the results show that the quality of service of real time traffic can be enhanced by using context aware adaptive MIP. The simulation involved with various speeds ranging from pedestrian scenarios to vehicular scenarios. Results are analyzed with variable data rates. The evaluations show that performance of the proposed solution is better compared to conventional MIP in terms of packet loss and throughput of real time traffic. © 2008 IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.
