Global software engineering (GSE) teams face challenges due to the need to replace traditional physical presence interactions and co-ordination with computer-mediated means. A vast majority of the available tool support for distributed collaboration is deep-seated in a desktop metaphor introduced in the `70s, and huge efforts are being devoted to overcome its known limitations. Over the last few years we have looked into the feasibility of providing an approach based on Activity-Based computing (ABC) to address these issues in a novel way. We have developed a middleware and support tool, ABC4GSD, to enable collaborative distributed features in an application, while maintaining common interactions with the workstation that users are accustomed to. In this paper we present the results of a user evaluation we conducted on ABC4GSD using exemplar GSE scenarios. Participants' responses show positive and encouraging reception of the activity-based approach to supporting GSE.

Design of a web-based thesaurus for systems of systems engineering (SoSE) discipline is presented in this article. Due to lack of linguistic clarity within this emerging discipline, there is a strong need to represent and interpret SoS concepts and terms to align heterogeneous models, and tools and techniques developed for SoS operations, management and its governance. A Blackboard-based systems approach is therefore used to devise a model, providing a mechanism for high level organisation and sharing of knowledge and information within the SoSE thesaurus system. To illustrate its applicability, a scenario derived from realistic use cases is provided. The potential benefits of this research are identified and a brief description of intended further work is given.

Many advances in science now require sophisticated scientific software applications that facilitate data and computationally intensive experiments. However, the effective utilization of existing computational power e.g., grid and cloud platforms depends on the capabilities of scientists to implement parallel, scalable code for such experiments. Currently, tools aimed at supporting scientists are either very limited to specific domains, or require significant development using low-level code. We describe our work towards a more end user-friendly scientific applications development process, notations and toolset. We introduce a scientific application designer intended for use primarily by scientists to enable them in describing workflow, processes, entities, formulae, computation and ultimately realization code for different computing platforms. This is achieved via a set of integrated, domain-specific visual and textual languages (DSVLs). A Web-based modeling tool supports definition of new DSVLs and modeling of these applications. We are currently extending our tool to support generation of multi-core and GPU implementations, and visualization of results.

The proliferation of cloud computing allows scientists to deploy computation and data intensive applications without infrastructure investment, where large generated datasets can be flexibly stored with multiple cloud service providers. Due to the pay-as-you-go model, the total application cost largely depends on the usage of computation, storage and bandwidth resources, and cutting the cost of cloud-based data storage becomes a big concern for deploying scientific applications in the cloud. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm that can automatically decide whether a generated dataset should be 1) stored in the current cloud, 2) deleted and re-generated whenever reused or 3) transferred to cheaper cloud service for storage. The algorithm finds the trade-off among computation, storage and bandwidth costs in the cloud, which are three key factors for the cost of storing generated application datasets with multiple cloud service providers. Simulations conducted with popular cloud service providers' pricing models show that the proposed algorithm is highly cost-effective to be utilised in the cloud.

Traceability benchmarks are essential for the evaluation of traceability recovery techniques. This includes the validation of an individual traceability technique itself and the objective comparison of the technique with other traceability techniques. However, it is generally acknowledged that it is a real challenge for researchers to obtain or build meaningful and robust benchmarks. This is because of the difficulty of obtaining or creating suitable benchmarks. In this paper, we describe an approach to enable researchers to establish affordable and robust benchmarks. We have designed rigorous manual identification and verification strategies to determine whether or not a link is correct. We have developed a formula to calculate the probability of errors in benchmarks. Analysis of error probability results shows that our approach can produce high quality benchmarks, and our strategies significantly reduce error probability in them.

In group decision making problems, given the importance of obtaining an accepted solution by the whole group, the consensus has attained a great attention and it is virtually a major goal of these problems. Consensus, as traditionally meant to be a full and unanimous agreement, is often not reachable in practice. A more realistic approach is to use softer consensus measures, which assess the consensus degree in a more flexible way, and therefore reflect the large spectrum of possible partial agreements, guiding the consensus process until widespread agreement is achieved among experts. In particular, the interpretation of the consensus based on the concept of fuzzy majority has been used in the most of the consensus models proposed in the literature, as it is more human-consistent and suitable for reflecting human perceptions of the meaning of consensus. However, there are still some open questions to be addressed. In this paper, we are going to highlight some issues in order to focus researcher's attention on new problems that arise when using consensus models based on soft consensus measures in real-world applications.

A prerequisite to implementing virtualization-aware security solutions is to solve the "semantic gap" problem. Current approaches require a deep knowledge of the kernel data to manually solve the semantic gap. However, kernel data is very complex;an Operating System (OS) kernel contains thousands of data structures that have direct and indirect (pointer) relations between each other with no explicit integrity constraints. This complexity makes it impractical to use manual methods. In this paper, we present a new solution to systematically and efficiently solve the semantic gap for any OS, without any prior knowledge of the OS. We present: (i) KDD, a tool that systematically builds a precise kernel data definition for any C-based OS such as Windows and Linux. KDD generates this definition by performing points-to analysis on the kernel's source code to disambiguate the pointer relations. (ii) SVA, a security appliance that solves the semantic gap based on the generated definition, to systematically and externally map the virtual machines' physical memory and extract the runtime dynamic objects. We have implemented prototypes for KDD and SVA, and have performed different experiments to prove their effectiveness. © 2012 IEEE.

New security threats arise frequently and impact on enterprise software security requirements. However, most existing security engineering approaches focus on capturing and enforcing security requirements at design time. Many do not address how a system should be adapted to cope with new unanticipated security requirements that arise at runtime. We describe a new approach - Model Driven Security engineering at Runtime (MDSE@R) - enabling security engineers to dynamically specify and enforce system security requirements based on current needs. We introduce a new domain-specific visual language to model customer security requirements in a given application. Moreover, we introduce a new UML profile to help capturing system architectural characteristics along with security specifications mapped to system entities. Our MDSE@R toolset supports refinement and merger of these visual models and uses model-driven engineering to take the merged model and specify security controls to be enforced on the target system components. A combination of interceptors (via generated configurations) and injected code (using aspect-oriented programming) are used to integrate the specified security controls within the target system. We describe MDSE@R, give an example of using it in securing an ERP system, describe its implementation, and discuss an evaluation of applying MDSE@R on a set of open source applications. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Multi-tenancy helps service providers to save costs, improve resource utilization, and reduce service customization and maintenance time by sharing of resources and services. On the other hand, supporting multi-tenancy adds more complexity to the shared application's required capabilities. Security is a key requirement that must be addressed when engineering new SaaS applications or when re-engineering existing applications to support multi-tenancy. Traditional security (re)engineering approaches do not fit with the multi-tenancy application model where tenants and their security requirements emerge after the system was first developed. Enabling, runtime, adaptable and tenant-oriented application security customization on single service instance is a key challenging security goal in multi-tenant application engineering. In this paper we introduce TOSSMA, a Tenant-Oriented SaaS Security Management Architecture. TOSSMA allows service providers to enable their tenants in defining, customizing and enforcing their security requirements without having to go back to application developers for maintenance or security customizations. TOSSMA supports security management for both new and existing systems. Service providers are not required to write security integration code to use a specific security platform or mechanism. In this paper, we describe details of our approach and architecture, our prototype implementation of TOSSMA, give a usage example of securing a multi-tenant SaaS, and discuss our evaluation experiments of TOSSMA. © 2012 IEEE.

It is very challenging to verify the integrity of Operating System (OS) kernel data because of its complex layout. In this paper, we address the problem of systematically generating an accurate kernel data definition for OSes without any prior knowledge of the OS kernel data. This definition accurately reflects the kernel data layout by resolving the pointer-based relations ambiguities between kernel data, in order to support systemic kernel data integrity checking. We generate this definition by performing static points-to analysis on the kernel's source code. We have designed a new points-to analysis algorithm and have implemented a prototype of our system. We have performed several experiments with real-world applications and OSes to prove the scalability and effectiveness of our approach for OS security applications. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
