Requirements written in multiple languages can lead to error-proneness, inconsistency and incorrectness. In a Malaysian setting, software engineers are exposed to both Malay and English requirements. This can be a challenging task for them especially when capturing and analyzing requirements. Further, they face difficulties to model requirements using semi-formal or formal models. This paper introduces a new approach, Pair-Oriented Requirements engineering (PORE) that uses an Essential Use Case (EUC) model to capture and analyze multi-lingual requirements. This approach is intended to assist practitioners in developing correct and consistent requirements as well as developing teamwork skills. Two quasi-experiment studies involving 80 participants in the first study and 38 participants in a subsequent study were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of this approach with respect to correctness and time spent in capturing multi-lingual requirements. It was found that PORE improves accuracy and hence helps users perform better in developing high quality requirements models. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

Indisputably, search engines (SEs) abound. The monumental growth of users performing online searches on the Web is a contending issue in the contemporary world nowadays. For example, there are tens of billions of searches performed everyday, which typically offer the users many irrelevant results which are time consuming and costly to the user. Based on the afore-going problem it has become a herculean task for existing Web SEs to provide complete, relevant and up-to-date information response to users’ search queries. To overcome this problem, we developed the Distributed Search Engine Architecture (DSEA), which is a new means of smart information query and retrieval of the World Wide Web (WWW). In DSEAs, multiple autonomous search engines, owned by different organizations or individuals, cooperate and act as a single search engine. This paper includes the work reported in this research focusing on development of DSEA, based on topic-specific specialised search engines. In DSEA, the results to specific queries could be provided by any of the participating search engines, for which the user is unaware of. The important design goal of using topic-specific search engines in the research is to build systems that can effectively be used by larger number of users simultaneously. Efficient and effective usage with good response is important, because it involves leveraging the vast amount of searched data from the World Wide Web, by categorising it into condensed focused topic -specific results that meet the user’s queries. This design model and the development of the DSEA adopt a Service Directory (SD) to route queries towards topic-specific document hosting SEs. It displays the most acceptable performance which is consistent with the requirements of the users. The evaluation results of the model return a very high priority score which is associated with each frequency of a keyword.

This paper considers the community interactions in online social media (OSM) as an OSM ecosystem and addresses the problem of modeling a Web forum ecosystem into a social graph. We propose a text mining method to model cross-thread interactions and interests of users in a Web forum ecosystem to generate an enriched social graph. In addition to modeling reply-to relationships between users, the proposed method models message-similarity relationship to keep track of all similar posts resulting out of deviated discussions in different threads. Although, the proposed graph-generation method considers a reply-to relation as the primary means of linkage, it establishes links between clusters of similar posts instead of links between individual users, and the linkages between users can be derived from the existing linkages between clusters. The method starts with linking posts in each thread individually by identifying reply-to relationships, and applies an agglomerative clustering algorithm based on similarity of posts across the forum to group all posts into different clusters. Finally, relations between each pair of individual posts are mapped to create a link between clusters containing the posts. As a result, the generated social graph resembles a network of clusters that can also be presented at the granule of users who authored the posts to generate a social network of forum users, and at the same time it keeps information for all other users with similar interests. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

There is a demand from simulation users for speed, the ability to obtain quickly results from simulation runs. Cloud computing offers the potential for scalable, on-demand access to resources that can be used to speed up simulation. However, developing cloud computing solutions for industry is difficult without appropriate expertise. This paper introduces the CloudSME project that is dedicated to developing cloud computing solutions for simulation in industry and presents an overview of the CloudSME Simulation Platform that is being used to support an initial set of Cloud-based versions of Simul8's discrete-event simulation environment, Ascomp's TransAT computational fluid dynamics application, Ingecon's 3D Scan Insole Designer tool and 2MORO's Bfly software for aircraft maintenance logistics. The paper presents an overview of cloud computing, the CloudSME project, the architecture of the CloudSME Simulation Platform and its two key elements: gUse and CloudBroker.

Reviewing software system architecture to pinpoint potential security flaws before proceeding with system development is a critical milestone in secure software development lifecycles. This includes identifying possible attacks or threat scenarios that target the system and may result in breaching of system security. Additionally we may also assess the strength of the system and its security architecture using well-known security metrics such as system attack surface, Compartmentalization, least-privilege, etc. However, existing efforts are limited to specific, predefined security properties or scenarios that are checked either manually or using limited toolsets. We introduce a new approach to support architecture security analysis using security scenarios and metrics. Our approach is based on formalizing attack scenarios and security metrics signature specification using the Object Constraint Language (OCL). Using formal signatures we analyse a target system to locate signature matches (for attack scenarios), or to take measurements (for security metrics). New scenarios and metrics can be incorporated and calculated provided that a formal signature can be specified. Our approach supports defining security metrics and scenarios at architecture, design, and code levels. We have developed a prototype software system architecture security analysis tool. To the best of our knowledge this is the first extensible architecture security risk analysis tool that supports both metric-based and scenario-based architecture security analysis. We have validated our approach by using it to capture and evaluate signatures from the NIST security principals and attack scenarios defined in the CAPEC database.

This paper describes a swarm control algorithm based on distributed pheromone maps to effectively track a moving fire front. The algorithm uses a single heuristic to maintain persistent surveillance to detect new fires, while concurrently allowing for tracking of known fires. Control of the swarm is fully distributed and self-contained; requiring no external communication infrastructure and being resilient to individual hardware failures.

Model transformations are an important part of Model Driven engineering (MDE). To generate a transformation with current MDE approaches, users are required to specify (or provide) complex meta-models and then engage in quite low-level coding in textual transformation scripting languages. This paper introduces a new approach to visualising source and target models that allows specifiers of complex data transformations to use the resultant visual notations for specifying transformations by example using drag and drop. We demonstrate the applicability of our new approach by an example case study.

Global software engineering (GSE) teams face challenges due to the need to replace traditional physical presence interactions and co-ordination with computer-mediated means. A vast majority of the available tool support for distributed collaboration is deep-seated in a desktop metaphor introduced in the `70s, and huge efforts are being devoted to overcome its known limitations. Over the last few years we have looked into the feasibility of providing an approach based on Activity-Based computing (ABC) to address these issues in a novel way. We have developed a middleware and support tool, ABC4GSD, to enable collaborative distributed features in an application, while maintaining common interactions with the workstation that users are accustomed to. In this paper we present the results of a user evaluation we conducted on ABC4GSD using exemplar GSE scenarios. Participants' responses show positive and encouraging reception of the activity-based approach to supporting GSE.

Many advances in science now require sophisticated scientific software applications that facilitate data and computationally intensive experiments. However, the effective utilization of existing computational power e.g., grid and cloud platforms depends on the capabilities of scientists to implement parallel, scalable code for such experiments. Currently, tools aimed at supporting scientists are either very limited to specific domains, or require significant development using low-level code. We describe our work towards a more end user-friendly scientific applications development process, notations and toolset. We introduce a scientific application designer intended for use primarily by scientists to enable them in describing workflow, processes, entities, formulae, computation and ultimately realization code for different computing platforms. This is achieved via a set of integrated, domain-specific visual and textual languages (DSVLs). A Web-based modeling tool supports definition of new DSVLs and modeling of these applications. We are currently extending our tool to support generation of multi-core and GPU implementations, and visualization of results.

The proliferation of cloud computing allows scientists to deploy computation and data intensive applications without infrastructure investment, where large generated datasets can be flexibly stored with multiple cloud service providers. Due to the pay-as-you-go model, the total application cost largely depends on the usage of computation, storage and bandwidth resources, and cutting the cost of cloud-based data storage becomes a big concern for deploying scientific applications in the cloud. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm that can automatically decide whether a generated dataset should be 1) stored in the current cloud, 2) deleted and re-generated whenever reused or 3) transferred to cheaper cloud service for storage. The algorithm finds the trade-off among computation, storage and bandwidth costs in the cloud, which are three key factors for the cost of storing generated application datasets with multiple cloud service providers. Simulations conducted with popular cloud service providers' pricing models show that the proposed algorithm is highly cost-effective to be utilised in the cloud.
