Layer-Wise Learning Rate Optimization for Task-Dependent Fine-Tuning of Pre-Trained Models: An Evolutionary Approach

The superior performance of large-scale pre-Trained models, such as Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) and Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (GPT), has received increasing attention in both academic and industrial research and has become one of the current research hotspots. A pre-Trained model refers to a model trained on large-scale unlabeled data, whose purpose is to learn general language representation or features for fine-Tuning or transfer learning in subsequent tasks. After pre-Training is complete, a small amount of labeled data can be used to fine-Tune the model for a specific task or domain. This two-stage method of "pre-Training+fine-Tuning"has achieved advanced results in natural language processing (NLP) tasks. Despite widespread adoption, existing fixed fine-Tuning schemes that adapt well to one NLP task may perform inconsistently on other NLP tasks given that different tasks have different latent semantic structures. In this article, we explore the effectiveness of automatic fine-Tuning pattern search for layer-wise learning rates from an evolutionary optimization perspective. Our goal is to use evolutionary algorithms to search for better task-dependent fine-Tuning patterns for specific NLP tasks than typical fixed fine-Tuning patterns. Experimental results on two real-world language benchmarks and three advanced pre-Training language models show the effectiveness and generality of the proposed framework. © 2024 held by the owner/author(s).

When data privacy is imposed as a necessity,Federated learning(FL)emerges as a relevant artificial intelligence field for developing machine learning(ML)models in a distributed and decentralized *** allows ML models to be trained on local devices without any need for centralized data transfer,thereby reducing both the exposure of sensitive data and the possibility of data interception by malicious third *** paradigm has gained momentum in the last few years,spurred by the plethora of real-world applications that have leveraged its ability to improve the efficiency of distributed learning and to accommodate numerous participants with their data *** virtue of FL,models can be learned from all such distributed data sources while preserving data *** aim of this paper is to provide a practical tutorial on FL,including a short methodology and a systematic analysis of existing software ***,our tutorial provides exemplary cases of study from three complementary perspectives:i)Foundations of FL,describing the main components of FL,from key elements to FL categories;ii)Implementation guidelines and exemplary cases of study,by systematically examining the functionalities provided by existing software frameworks for FL deployment,devising a methodology to design a FL scenario,and providing exemplary cases of study with source code for different ML approaches;and iii)Trends,shortly reviewing a non-exhaustive list of research directions that are under active investigation in the current FL *** ultimate purpose of this work is to establish itself as a referential work for researchers,developers,and data scientists willing to explore the capabilities of FL in practical applications.

ViGT: proposal-free video grounding with a learnable token in the transformer

The video grounding(VG) task aims to locate the queried action or event in an untrimmed video based on rich linguistic descriptions. Existing proposal-free methods are trapped in the complex interaction between video and query, overemphasizing cross-modal feature fusion and feature correlation for VG. In this paper, we propose a novel boundary regression paradigm that performs regression token learning in a transformer. Particularly, we present a simple but effective proposal-free framework, namely video grounding transformer(ViGT), which predicts the temporal boundary using a learnable regression token rather than multi-modal or cross-modal features. In ViGT, the benefits of a learnable token are manifested as follows.(1) The token is unrelated to the video or the query and avoids data bias toward the original video and query.(2) The token simultaneously performs global context aggregation from video and query ***, we employed a sharing feature encoder to project both video and query into a joint feature space before performing cross-modal co-attention(i.e., video-to-query attention and query-to-video attention) to highlight discriminative features in each modality. Furthermore, we concatenated a learnable regression token [REG] with the video and query features as the input of a vision-language transformer. Finally, we utilized the token [REG] to predict the target moment and visual features to constrain the foreground and background probabilities at each timestamp. The proposed ViGT performed well on three public datasets:ANet-Captions, TACoS, and YouCookⅡ. Extensive ablation studies and qualitative analysis further validated the interpretability of ViGT.

SG-NeRF:Sparse-Input Generalized Neural Radiance Fields for Novel View Synthesis

Traditional neural radiance fields for rendering novel views require intensive input images and pre-scene optimization,which limits their practical *** propose a generalization method to infer scenes from input images and perform high-quality rendering without pre-scene optimization named SG-NeRF(Sparse-Input Generalized Neural Radiance Fields).Firstly,we construct an improved multi-view stereo structure based on the convolutional attention and multi-level fusion mechanism to obtain the geometric features and appearance features of the scene from the sparse input images,and then these features are aggregated by multi-head attention as the input of the neural radiance *** strategy of utilizing neural radiance fields to decode scene features instead of mapping positions and orientations enables our method to perform cross-scene training as well as inference,thus enabling neural radiance fields to generalize for novel view synthesis on unseen *** tested the generalization ability on DTU dataset,and our PSNR(peak signal-to-noise ratio)improved by 3.14 compared with the baseline method under the same input *** addition,if the scene has dense input views available,the average PSNR can be improved by 1.04 through further refinement training in a short time,and a higher quality rendering effect can be obtained.

This research work presents a novel language intervention system for Tamil-speaking children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The system satisfies the considerable requirement for tools aimed at one more section of population that has actually been forgotten by mainstream economics. Traditional language learning applications often lack specificity for diverse linguistic contexts, focusing on general learning rather than the unique challenges faced by ASD children. The proposed solution leverages Deep Learning (DL) modules to transform partial spoken Tamil words into complete, child-friendly vocabulary. This system goes beyond simple word completion;it incorporates interactive features to engage children with ASD and promote active learning. Preliminary evaluations yielded promising results, suggesting the system's potential in enhancing communication skills among Tamil-speaking children with ASD. This paper research study reviews the limitations of existing language learning tools and the rationale behind employing a DL-based approach. We discuss the specific DL architecture (e.g., Recurrent Neural Networks) envisioned for the system and how it will be trained on a corpus of Tamil speech data. This study also investigate the potential advantages beyond vocabulary learning, such as improved sentence formulation and the development of practical language abilities. Future ambitions include broadening the system's scope to include more languages, refining the DL model through ongoing training with enriched datasets, and conducting extensive user research with varied ASD populations. Validation across demographics is critical to ensuring the system's efficiency and generality. This research has the potential to bridge the language acquisition gap for Tamil-speaking children with ASD, empowering them to develop crucial communication skills and fostering their social inclusion. © 2024 IEEE.

Neural architecture search (NAS) has received increasing attention because of its exceptional merits in automating the design of deep neural network (DNN) architectures. However, the performance evaluation process, as a key part of NAS, often requires training a large number of DNNs. This inevitably makes NAS computationally expensive. In past years, many efficient evaluation methods (EEMs) have been proposed to address this critical issue. In this article, we comprehensively survey these EEMs published up to date, and provide a detailed analysis to motivate the further development of this research direction. Specifically, we divide the existing EEMs into four categories based on the number of DNNs trained for constructing these EEMs. The categorization can reflect the degree of efficiency in principle, which can in turn help quickly grasp the methodological features. In surveying each category, we further discuss the design principles and analyze the strengths and weaknesses to clarify the landscape of existing EEMs, thus making easily understanding the research trends of EEMs. Furthermore, we also discuss the current challenges and issues to identify future research directions in this emerging topic. In summary, this survey provides a convenient overview of EEM for interested users, and they can easily select the proper EEM method for the tasks at hand. In addition, the researchers in the NAS field could continue exploring the future directions suggested in the article. © 2020 IEEE.

Blockchain-Empowered Asynchronous Federated Reinforcement Learning for IoT-Based Traffic Trajectory Prediction

Vehicle trajectory prediction plays a crucial role in IoT-based intelligent transportation systems, which can effectively address key issues such as driving safety and multi-vehicle collaboration. However, the sensitivity of trajectory data and the reluctance of data holders to share it constrain the prediction model's ability to capture vehicle behavior patterns in different scenarios. To address the above problems, we propose a blockchain-enabled asynchronous federated proximal policy optimization framework (BE-AFPPO) for the trajectory prediction of self-driving vehicles. Firstly, we propose a Curiosity Proximal Policy Optimisation (C-PPO) algorithm. The method utilizes a driven exploration strategy to actively motivate the intelligent agent to explore the unknown state space. The avoidance policy model reaches a local optimum when processing trajectory data. In addition, we design historical GRU and future GRU as input layers. The target's historical motion features and future trajectory features are extracted, respectively. Then, various data is received through asynchronous federated learning. This model can fully learn the vehicle's behavior patterns in different scenarios, which improves prediction accuracy. Based on this, we develop a blockchain-based Dynamic Group Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (DG-PBFT) consensus algorithm. This enhances the credibility and integrity of the data while enriching the sources of trajectory data. Finally, we perform the experiments on the publicly available dataset nuScenes. The results demonstrate that the proposed method improves the robustness and accuracy of trajectory prediction. © 2014 IEEE.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been the most common cause of dementia making cognitive score prediction and important feature identification crucial for its diagnosis. Although sparse linear regression has been used for this purpose due to its simplicity, it often selects an excessive number of features to track the disease and assumes a linear relationship between input and output, which might not always hold. To address these limitations, genetic programming-based symbolic regression (GPSR) algorithms have been proposed. GPSR can select the important features by exploring the feature space and learning a regression model without any assumption of model structure. However, the generalization ability of existing GPSR methods still needs to be improved. Considering the multiple related prediction tasks in AD studies, this work proposes a new method called linear scaled GPSR with multi-task feature selection (LSGPMTFS), to promote the prediction performance of each task by knowledge-sharing among multiple tasks. LSGPMTFS has two stages. The first stage learns a specific feature subset for each task. In the second stage, the model for each task is searched on the union of feature subsets selected from the first stage. The experimental results on authentic AD datasets demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can select a small set of important features with better learning and generalization performance compared with other GPSR methods. © 2024 IEEE.

Real-time 3-D view reconstruction in an unfamiliar environment poses complexity for various applications due to varying conditions such as occlusion, latency, precision, etc. This article thoroughly examines and tests contemporary methodologies addressing challenges in 3-D view reconstruction. The methods being explored in this article are categorized into volumetric and mesh, generative adversarial network based, and open source library based methods. The exploration of these methods undergoes detailed discussions, encompassing methods, advantages, limitations, and empirical results. The real-time testing of each method is done on benchmarked datasets, including ShapeNet, Pascal 3D+, Pix3D, etc. The narrative highlights the crucial role of 3-D view reconstruction in domains such as robotics, virtual and augmented reality, medical imaging, cultural heritage preservation, etc. The article also anticipates future scopes by exploring generative models, unsupervised learning, and advanced sensor fusion to increase the robustness of the algorithms. © 2020 IEEE.
