With advancements in the science of detection and attribution studies, the influence of climate change over many events has now been quantified.
Because of the rapidly increasing temperatures, vulnerable populations (adults older than 65 years, and children younger than one year of age) were exposed to 3·7 billion more heatwave days in 2021 than annually in 1986–2005 (indicator 1.1.2), and heat-related deaths increased by 68% between 2000–04 and 2017–21 (indicator 1.1.5), a death toll that was significantly exacerbated by the confluence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new generation accelerator based HPC clusters use OpenCL language for exploiting the heterogeneous compute power. OpenCL is a portable language which allows dynamic binding of heterogeneous compute devices at runtime. It uses a kernel programming method by which the different functionality of the program can execute simultaneously on heterogeneous devices. An OpenCL program is made up of host code, execution environment and device code making the program lengthy and complex. This paper describes the software named OpenCLGen which automatically generates OpenCL programs for single or multiple CPU or GPU devices. A complete OpenCL program is generated with minimum programming effort based on the kernel code supplied by the user; thereby helping to improve programmer productivity. OpenCLGen produces a downloadable package aggregating the host code, header files, runtime for kernel code, Makefile and user instructions. This paper describes the design of the OpenCLGen software and offers a comparison to other similar software.

FPGAs are becoming increasingly attractive - thanks to the improvement of their capacities and their performances. Today, FPGAs represent an efficient design solution for numerous embedded solutions. There are several alternatives for configuring these FPGAs. However, these configuration solutions are vulnerable and often require significant up-front design effort and time. This paper proposes a simple, efficient and secure configuration method that utilizes a USB to SPI bridge chip to configure an FPGA device. This solution offers multiple benefits compared to traditional scheme where a microprocessor or microcontroller is used for the same. The approach considerably reduces component count, board space, and costs. The technique describes a low power and low cost dedicated interface for In-system programming of FPGA devices. This method can also serve to replace the popular JTAG configuration interface and eliminate the need for a separate JTAG connector on the board, hence reducing cost and board space moreover leading to more secure configuration. The design had been implemented and tested on a custom Xilinx FPGAs board.

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a micro-vascular complication of diabetes and is one of the major causes for blindness. DR is asymptomatic in early stages and when symptoms surface irreversible damage would have already occurred to the retina hence screening is of at most importance. Here, we propose an automated method for severity scoring of DR which can be utilized for automated filtering and prioritizing patients for ophthalmic review. The proposed method assesses the image quality, detects red lesions and white lesions. The output of the optic disc detection was used to demarcate the retinal image into four regions. Lesion specific features extracted from demarcated regions were used to create a multi-class SVM classifier which in turn was used to arrive at a DR severity score. The proposed method was validated on 829 retinal images and achieved an accuracy of 72.4%. grouping all the positive grades into single class resulted in a sensitivity of 89.9% and specificity of 77.8%.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is an important tool in analyzing brain activity. EEG recording is effectively used for detection and prediction of electrophysiological abnormalities due to epilepsy. Epileptic seizure is a brain disorder which affects the patients acutely. Seizures are controllable with medication in 70% of the cases, however the rest may continue to have recurring epileptic seizures despite medications. Since seizures are unpredictable clinically, these patients will also live with perpetual anxiety about the onset of seizure, apart from being affected by the seizure consequences such as drowsiness, headache, vomiting, etc. The seizures can cause injury to the patients, and in some cases may even result in death. Seizure prediction can aid patients with disabling seizure by detecting the seizure precursors in advance and alerting the patients or their caregivers. If the seizure is predicted in advance it can be aborted by fast acting Anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) or other treatment procedures. This will also aid pre-surgical video EEG monitoring wherein prediction of the ictal onset zone is paramount and machine alarms can be devised. In this paper, we are comparing the results of our research work related to the seizure prediction models. First model, as in usual practice, differentiates between preictal and interictal data segments only. The other seizure prediction model uses Interictal Epileptiform Discharges (IEDs), Electrographic Seizures (ES) and ictal data segments in addition to the first model. We found that the latter one provided better results and improved the seizure prediction performance.
