Because of computational grid heterogeneity, scale and complexity, faults become likely. Therefore, grid infrastructure must have mechanisms to deal with faults while also providing efficient and reliable services to its end users. Existing fault-tolerant approaches are inefficient because they are reactive and incomplete. They are reactive because they only deal with faults when they take place; they are incomplete because they only deal with certain types of faults. Proactive approaches increase efficiency by reducing the cost and time of operations and network resource usage by maintaining the state of executing applications and resuming operation when rescheduled. This paper presents an agent oriented, fault-tolerant grid framework where agents deal with individual faults proactively. Agents maintain information about hardware conditions, executing process memory consumption, available resources, network conditions and component mean time to failure. Based on this information and critical states, agent can improve the reliability and efficiency of grid services

This paper presents an improvement to existing class test ordering strategies by including coupling measures to reduce non-determinism and decrease the number of stubs to be produced. Our novel strategy aims to lift the known methods from class hierarchies to component-based product lines in which so-called connectors between components are key entities for structuring, assembling and integrating software architectures, and in which tighter coupling of classes inside components and looser coupling between classes in different components are fundamental to component-based architecture composition. The paper also evaluates the new method and confirms the expected reductions in the number of stubs generated and the improved test ordering. Two recent test order strategies for C++ are compared with our novel approach through experiments conducted on two mini product lines written in Java. The new proposed test ordering strategy is more deterministic through measuring coupling, which is at the heart of component-based product line architectures.

This paper identifies challenges in managing resources in a Grid computing environment and proposes computational economy as a metaphor for effective management of resources and application scheduling. It identifies distributed resource management challenges and requirements of economy-based Grid systems, and discusses various representative economy-based systems, both historical and emerging, for cooperative and competitive trading of resources such as CPU cycles, storage, and network bandwidth. It presents an extensible, service-oriented Grid architecture driven by Grid economy and an approach for its realization by leveraging various existing Grid technologies. It also presents commodity and auction models for resource allocation. The use of commodity economy model for resource management and application scheduling in both computational and data grids is also presented. © 2005 IEEE.

A stock market decision making makes a compelling case for the use of context aware systems that can adapt to a context behavior known as 'random walk'. To defend such a proposition the paper adopts the formulation typically used in sensor driven applications that involves critical context characteristics of pervasiveness and instability. From the pervasive perspective the paper concentrates on the ability to characterize a context-state trajectory behavior in real-time to proactively estimate the trend of context change. From the perspective of instability it discusses context related mechanisms such as hedging with derivative instruments as a way to caliber context aware system sensitivity to contextual changes. To validate the idea the paper introduces a special case of an equity option portfolio that is simultaneously delta, gamma and Vega neutral, to deal with extreme context-state exhibiting unpredictable time-varying behavior. Based on some preliminary results of real life experimentation the paper concludes with a continuing current debate on the distinctive merits of reactive versus proactive context.

In general few components are reused as they are. Often, available components are incompatible with what is required. This necessitates component adaptations or the use of adapters between components. In this paper we develop algorithms for the synthesis of adapters, coercing incompatible components into meeting requirements. We concentrate on adapters for concurrent systems, where adapters are able to resolve synchronisation problems of concurrent components. A new interface model for components, which includes protocol information, allows us to generate these adapters semi-automatically.

Computational Grids are a promising platform for executing large-scale resource intensive applications. However, resource management and scheduling in the Grid environment is a complex undertaking as resources are (geographically) distributed, heterogeneous in nature, owned by different individuals or organizations with their own policies, have different access and cost models, and have dynamically varying loads and availability. This introduces a number of challenging issues such as site autonomy, heterogeneous interaction, policy extensibility, resource allocation or co-allocation, online control, scalability, transparency, resource brokering, and "computational economy". A number of Grid systems (such as Globus and Legion) have addressed many of these issues with exception of a computational economy. We argue that a computational economy is required in order to create a real world scalable Grid because it provides a mechanism for regulating the Grid resources demand and supply. It offers incentive for resource owners to be part of the Grid and encourages consumers to optimally utilize resources and balance timeframe and access costs. We propose a 'computational economy framework' that builds on the existing Grid middleware systems and offers an infrastructure for resource management and trading in the Grid environment. We discuss the usage economic models for resource trading in the Nimrod/G resource broker and present deadline and cost-based scheduling experimental results on the Grid. © 2001 IEEE.

E-businesses are increasingly looking towards data mining systems for meeting their business intelligence needs. However, the current state of the art in data mining does not allow any one system to be able to meet the diverse business intelligence needs of e-businesses. A second bottleneck is the high initial cost involved in establishing data mining infrastructure within an organisation. We propose the concept of a federated data mining system hosted by an Application Service Provider (ASP) as a means of alleviating the bottlenecks of high cost and diverse data mining needs. We also present an XML DTD, which provides the basis for data mining systems to describe their services and architecture to the rest of the federation.

The proliferation of mobile devices and new software creates a need for computing environments that are able to react to environmental (context) changes. To date insufficient attention has been paid to the issues of defining an integrated component-based environment which is able to describe complex computational context and handle different types of adaptation for a variety of new and existing pervasive enterprise applications. In this paper a run-time environment for pervasive enterprise systems is proposed. The associated architecture uses a component based modelling paradigm, and is held together by an event-based mechanism which provides significant flexibility in dynamic system configuration and adaptation. The approach used to describe and manage context information captures descriptions of complex user, device and application context including enterprise roles and role policies. In addition, the coordination language used to coordinate components of the architecture that manage context, adaptation and policy provides the flexibility needed in pervasive computing applications supporting dynamic reconfiguration and a variety of communication paradigms. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

The RM-ODP Enterprise Language comprises concepts, rules and structures for the specification of a community, where a community comprises objects (human, software, or combinations thereof) formed to meet an objective. The Enterprise Language focuses on the purpose, scope and policies of the community, where an enterprise policy is a set of rules with a particular objective related to the community's purpose described as obligations, prohibitions, and permissions. In order to enable adaptations of the enterprise's objectives, structure, policies and roles, we are designing a conceptual architecture with a process-oriented view of roles and policy adaptation mechanisms. Mobile enterprise objects interact with the rest of the community via processes called role-proxies. © 2000 IEEE.
