parallel and distributed systems engineers are always looking for a way to speed-up their programs. They sometimes forget that well-structured programs are more flexible, and therefore easier to modify or restructure in order to improve performance or to map onto a particular architecture. This paper illustrates a systematic way of designing well-structured parallel and distributed programs. The method is based on SASD, one of the most popular methods for the analysis and design of sequential systems, and CSP, a formalism for specifying the behaviour of communicating systems. The influence of SASD is evident in the way diagrams are used during the various phases of the development. CSP allows us to formally verify and transform the programs. The main feature of our method is the ability to reuse behavioural specifications, the way the components synchronise and communicate, and provide rules to verify and transform the design structure. © 1995 IEEE.

Static, dynamic, and electronic properties of liquid gallium studied by first-principles simulation

First-principles molecular-dynamics simulations having a duration of 8 ps have been used to study the static, dynamic, and electronic properties of Ga at the temperatures 702 and 982 K. The simulations use the density-functional pseudopotential method and the system is maintained on the Born-Oppenheimer surface by conjugate gradients relaxation. The static structure factor and radial distribution function of the simulated system agree very closely with experimental data, but the diffusion coefficient is noticeably lower than measured values. The long simulations allow us to calculate the dynamical structure factor S(q,ω). A sound-wave peak is clearly visible in S(q,ω) at small wave vectors, and we present results for the dispersion curve and hence the sound velocity, which is close to the experimental value. The electronic density of states is very close to the free-electron form. Values of the electrical conductivity calculated from the Kubo-Greenwood formula are in satisfactory accord with measured data.

The authors describe PARAMICS which consists of a suite of software tools for the simulation of traffic conditions at the individual vehicle level. The software is the result of three years of joint development between the Edinburgh parallel computing centre (EPCC) and SIAS Ltd. Microscopic simulation has been a desire of traffic modelers and transportation planners for many years, since it is only by considering individual vehicles that congestion effects, variable driver behaviour effects, and accurate pollution emissions can be simulated. The current PARAMICS software accepts standard traffic modelling data formats, and includes a large number of transport planning and environmental features.

Writing parallel applications is considerably more complex due to additional problems not found in the sequential environment. The main problems include communication, synchronization, data partitioning and distribution, mapping of processes, heterogeneity and fault tolerance. Fault tolerance is a very important feature in parallel/distributed systems since the mean time between failures of the system decreases with the number of processors, and the failure of just one process(or) can lead to the crash of the entire application. This paper presents an example of a parallel library (PUL-RD) that solves most of the problems pointed out before and provides support for fault tolerance. The original version of the library offers high-level support for parallelism in a portable way and can be used to write grid-based parallel applications which have a regular decomposition. In this paper, we will describe the fault-tolerance issues that were incorporated into the PUL-RD, giving special attention to the functionality of the checkpointing scheme. © 1995 IEEE.

This paper presents a checkpointing scheme that was implemented in a parallel library that runs on top of CHIMP/MPI. The main goals of the checkpointing mechanism are portability and efficiency. It runs on every platform supported by MPI in a machine-independent way. The scheme allows the migration of checkpoints and offers a flexible recovery mechanism based on data-reconfiguration. Some performance results will be presented at the end of the paper together with some techniques that can be used to increase the efficiency of the checkpointing mechanism.

This paper presents a technique which attempts to aid the simulationist in the decision as to whether or not simulation should be implemented on a multiprocessing computer. The proposed technique has been used to estimate the performance of parallel discrete event simulations. This employs critical path analysis to determine the lower bound of the execution time of a parallelised simulation and has been used by other authors to study the effect that process scheduling and causality maintenance protocols have on performance. The contribution of this paper is the extension of this technique to a class of common simulation models which demand resource sharing. This forces a parallel implementation to use some kind of information exchange protocol. A case study is presented which illustrates the potential usefulness of this technique. This employs a performance analysis tool developed for this purpose which has been implemented using the simulation package SES/Workbench.
