This paper reports on a project to evaluate students' use of wikis in a distance learning course on information and communication technologies. The students, who were already familiar with discussion forums, were offered the use of wikis for some of the online tutorials which form part of the course. They were then asked for feedback via an online questionnaire. Students' comments show that they valued the chance to use a wiki and could see its benefits for collaboration. However, they also raised concerns related to usability and to issues of editing each other's work.

Crowd simulation has been becoming an efficient tool to study the crowd behavior and its movement. Macroscopic and microscopic approaches take a trade-off between efficiency and accuracy, but neither of them achieves the two goals at the same time. Aiming to achieve both efficiency and accuracy, a multi-resolution model is proposed in this paper for crowd simulation. The paper illustrates how macroscopic and microscopic models co-exist in a single simulator and the interactions between them. The simulation result of a case study shows that the proposed multi-resolution simulation model can obtain a more accurate result than that using a simple macroscopic model alone. The simulation performance is also improved in the meantime.

This paper presents an alternative algorithm for integrating the existing knowledge of a supervised learning neural network with the new training data. The algorithm allows the existing knowledge to age out in slow rate as a neural network is gradually retrained with consecutive sets of new samples, resembling the change of application locality under a consistent environment. The algorithm also utilizes the contour preserving classification algorithm to increase the accuracy of classification. The experiment is performed on 2-dimension partition problem and the result convincingly confirms the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Motivating students to contribute to learning communities is not a new problem, nor is it restricted to online learning. However it becomes especially obvious in large online courses where student collaboration is one of the intended learning outcomes. This paper describes two models for driving student engagement in producing user-generated and user-reviewed content. It discusses the motivation for participation and gives results from two subject areas. The behaviour of students of second and third level language courses is compared to that of first level technology students when their participation is simply encouraged and when it is required for assessment. A model for driving user-engagement is proposed and related to previous experience in online learning.

The demand for Internet content rose dramatically. Servers became more and more powerful and the bandwidth of end user connections and backbones grew constantly. Nevertheless users often experience poor performance when they access Web sites or download files. Reasons for such problems are often performance problems which occur directly on the servers (e.g. poor performance of server-side applications or during flash crowds), problems concerning the network infrastructure (e.g. long geographical distances, network overloads, etc.) and a surprising fact is that many people tend to access the same piece of information repeatedly. Web caching has been recognized as the effective schemes to alleviate the service bottleneck, minimize the user access latency and reduce the network traffic. Consequently, in this paper we discuss an alternative way to tackle these problems with an implementation of autonomous SPY tool. This tool is capable to self directed either to cache or not to cache the objects in a document based on the behavior of users' activities (number of object hits, script size of objects, and time to receive objects) in Internet based electronic services (e-services) for enhancing Web access.

The experiments aimed to compare data driven soft computing models for the valuation of residential premises were conducted using the KEEL tool (knowledge extraction based on evolutionary learning). Twelve regression algorithms were applied to actual data sets derived from the cadastral system and the registry of real estate transactions. The 5times2-fold cross validation and nonparametric statistical tests were applied. The results proved the usefulness of the tool to carry out laborious investigation in a relatively short time. Further research is needed to determine to what extent data coming from such sources allow to build the real estate valuation models.

In numerous practical applications precise control of a subsystem passively connected to a precisely controllable subsystem by elastic connection is needed. As typical example is a crane carrying its payload swinging on an elastic string can be mentioned. From the point of view of control technology this task is interesting since the connected degree of freedom has little damping and it is apt to keep swinging accordingly. The traditional approaches apply the input shaping technology to assist the human operator responsible for the manipulation task. In the present paper a novel adaptive approach applying fixed point transformations based iterations having local basin of attraction is proposed for simultaneously tackle the problems originating from the imprecisions of the available dynamic model of the system to be controlled and the swinging phenomenon. In the simulation investigations presented a simple model consisting of two connected masspoints is considered: one of them can directly by controlled by control forces, the other one (in the role of the payload) is dragged by the controlled point via an elastic spring. The control considers the 4th time-derivative of the trajectory of the dragged system.

Precise control of Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs) navigating between the aisles of manufacturing systems by the use of local markers is an important task. On the basis of the geometric model of the workspace and the vehicles and that of the sensor uncertainties precise trajectories were recently generated along which the vehicle safely can move. In order to achieve precise trajectory tracking the effects of the system's dynamical uncertainties (modeling errors and possible external perturbations) have to be compensated. In the present paper a simple, fixed point transformations based adaptive control is proposed for this purpose. The proposed method is tested via simulation for a vehicle of triangular shape, driven by three omnidirectional wheels. The method is also able to monitor and evade the conditions that may lead to turning over the vehicle.
