Co-pyrolysis of oil palm trunk and polypropylene: Pyrolysis oil composition and formation mechanism

Pyrolysis oil can be used as a precursor to synthesize value-added biochemicals. Co-pyrolysis of two or more feedstocks generally improves the selectivity and yield of the target compounds. In this work, oil palm trunk (OPT) was subjected to single-feed pyrolysis and co-pyrolysis with polypropylene (PP) from 500 to 700 °C. The highest pyrolysis oil yield of 26.33 wt.% was obtained from OPT at 700 °C, which mainly contributed by the lignin decomposition in OPT. Phenolics (51.77–57.78%) and oxygenates (36.31–46.99%) were the major compounds detected in the OPT-derived pyrolysis oil. The addition of PP enhanced the formation of hydrocarbons (5.19–10.22%) and decreased the contents of phenolics (34.01–41.85%) in the co-pyrolysis oil. In the case of co-pyrolysis, the intermolecular reactions between PP and OPT-derived radicals led to the formation of ketones and alcohols, which contributed to the increase of oxygenates content. The highest oil yield of 16.17 wt.% was obtained at 600 °C from co-pyrolysis, the oil of which contained mainly phenolic compounds, oxygenated compounds (i.e., ketones and furans), and hydrocarbons. These findings highlighted the potential of oil derived from the pyrolysis of OPT (single feed) and co-pyrolysis of OPT and PP (binary feed) for the production of value-added chemicals. © 2022 The Author(s)

Electrochromic (EC) smart windows are highly efficient in preventing solar irradiation. Nevertheless, an insufficient automated monitoring and control system for EC windows has been observed. This study outlined the framework for designing a control system that effectively regulated the voltage polarity of an EC smart window. Integrating Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities and environmental sensors enhanced the smart window control system. This integration allowed for automated monitoring and adjustment of light intensity (below and above 30,000 lx), temperature (below and above 32 °C), and UV index (below 3 and above 7) for the smart window. The magnitude of the current supplied from the output load of the operational circuit module was directly correlated with the switching time of the electrochromic window. Moreover, voltage fluctuation was observed during the evaluation testing of the control system, which was ascribed to the reliability of the breadboard platform. This study also provided a functional design analysis for a Wi-Fi-enabled control system, presented insights into manual and automatic control modes under diverse environmental conditions, and improved user interaction through real-time data visualization using the IoT Blynk platform. Overall, this study presented a range of cost-effective approaches for managing the dynamic EC window using Wi-Fi and sensor-enabled technology. © The Author(s) 2024.

The current work investigated emerging fields for generating and consuming hydrogen and synthetic Fischer-Tropsch (FT) fuels, especially from detrimental greenhouse gases, CO2 and CH4. Technologies for syngas generation ranging from partial oxidation, auto-thermal, dry, photothermal and wet or steam reforming of methane were adequately reviewed alongside biomass valorisation for hydrogen generation, water electrolysis and climate challenges due to methane flaring, production, storage, transportation, challenges and opportunities in CO2 and CH4 utilisation. Under the same conditions, dry reforming produces more coke than steam reforming. However, combining the two techniques produces syngas with a high H2/CO ratio, which is suitable for producing long-chain hydrocarbons. Although the steam methane reforming (SMR) process has been industrialised, it is well known to consume significant energy. However, coke production via catalytic methane decomposition, the prime hindrance to large-scale implementation of these techniques for hydrogen production, could be addressed by coupling CO with CO2 conversion to alter the H2/CO ratio of syngas, increasing the reaction temperatures in dry reforming, or increasing the steam content fed in steam reforming. Optimised hydrogen production and generation of green fuels from CO2 and CH4 can be achieved by implementing these strategies. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Language-queried audio source separation (LASS) aims to separate an audio source guided by a text query, with the signal-to-distortion ratio (SDR)-based metrics being commonly used to objectively measure the quality of the separated audio. However, the SDR-based metrics require a reference signal, which is often difficult to obtain in real-world scenarios. In addition, with the SDR-based metrics, the content information of the text query is not considered effectively in LASS. This paper introduces a reference-free evaluation metric using a contrastive language-audio pretraining (CLAP) module, termed CLAPScore, which measures the semantic similarity between the separated audio and the text query. Unlike SDR, the proposed CLAPScore metric evaluates the quality of the separated audio based on the content information of the text query, without needing a reference signal. Experiments show that the CLAPScore provides an effective evaluation of the semantic relevance of the separated audio to the text query, as compared to the SDR metric, offering an alternative for the performance evaluation of LASS systems. In order for economies to expand and develop globally, innovation is essential. A popular statistic for evaluating innovation between countries is the Global Innovation Index (GII), which provides a thorough analysis of the state of innovation worldwide. In this context, this paper aims to contribute to the literature by examining the multi-factoral effects of the innovation ecosystem on innovation development (internal causal effects), and the impact of global trends and crises on the innovation ecosystem (external causal effects) in Montenegro. The resources provided in this paper offer valuable insights into the innovation landscape in Montenegro and the Western Balkans, as well as the impact of globalization, global trends, and crises on innovation in the region. The paper also discusses the function of innovation hubs such as the DigNest project, in promoting cooperation between academic institutions, government agencies and corporations, and supporting the exchange of knowledge and fresh concepts. © 2024 IEEE.

This study evaluated the energy saving potential of process intensified double column reactive extractive distillation (DC-RED) through three case studies. The results showed that process intensified technologies, thermally coupled reactive extractive distillation (TC-RED) and dividing wall reactive extractive distillation (DW-RED), did not yield any energy savings compared to conventional DC-RED. Contrary to the expectation, the elimination of the remixing effect in the process intensified DC-RED did not lead to any energy savings. Further analysis revealed that the remixing effect was not significant enough to achieve energy savings through process intensification, and the strong reaction exotherm in DC-RED reduced the potential for energy saving. Additionally, the higher interconnection flowrate in TC-RED and DW-RED resulted in higher energy consumption due to the increased boil-up ratio. Moreover, the lower feed temperature to the solvent recovery column (SRC) led to less energy efficiency and larger reboiler duty. An alternative energy saving scheme was proposed by adding a heat exchanger (HEX). The addition of HEX led to energy savings of 37.23 % in Acetonitrile (ACN)/Isopropanol (IPA)/Water separation, 45.62 % in Ethyl Acetate (EA)/Ethanol (EtOH)/Water separation, and 39.21 % in IPA/EA/Water separation. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

Satellite high aerial platform terrestrial integrated networks have become the hot topic these years, which have been regarded as the major part of the intelligence of things for future networks. During this work, we investigate the secrecy performance for rate-splitting multiple access-assisted satellite high aerial platform terrestrial integrated networks. Besides, imperfect hardware and channel estimation errors are considered in the secrecy networks. Moreover, to enhance the energy utilization efficiency, rate-splitting multiple access scheme is utilized into the considered network, which is prior to that of the non-orthogonal multiple access scheme. What's more, to enhance the satellite transmission, multiple high aerial platforms are used to forward the transmission along with multiple eavesdroppers. In addition, the direct transmission link is not considered in the secrecy networks due to the heavy fading and obstacles. Relied on the former considerations, the exact and asymptotic analysis for the secrecy performance is further obtained to confirm the rightness of the analysis. Image recognition, powered by machine learning (ML), has significantly advanced applications in both dance movement recognition and robotic vision. This review examines key ML techniques, including Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, alongside pose estimation methods like OpenPose and Part Affinity Fields (PAFs). These techniques enhance dance classification, real-time feedback, and motion analysis, with OpenPose + LSTMs and PAFs + LSTMs demonstrating the highest accuracy. Notwithstanding progress, obstacles such as high computational costs, data dependency, and real-time implementation challenges persist. Beyond dance, these methods are critical in robotic vision, intelligent automation, and industrial image processing, enabling autonomous robotic navigation, defect detection in manufacturing, and AI-driven motion tracking. By leveraging human movement analysis for robotics, ML improves human-robot interaction, robotic-assisted rehabilitation, and industrial automation. Despite progress, challenges such as high computational demands, data dependency, and real-time constraints remain. This review explores future directions, including multimodal data fusion, hybrid AI models, and real-time optimization, bridging the gap between AI-driven motion systems and intelligent automation to enhance adaptability and efficiency across domains.
