Gaining speedup with OpenMP schedule type under imbalance workload

Despite OpenMP being the defacto standard for parallel programming on shared memory system, little is known on how its schedule type and chunk size effect the parallel performance of shared memory multicore processor. Performance analysis in the literature have overlooked the effects of different schedule type and chunk size, possibly it was simply not the focus of their research. Often, the researchers did not specify the schedule type explicitly. This has resulted in the default way of assigning the loop iterations among threads. By default, the static schedule is used and the size of chunk which is the ratio of total number of iterations to the number of threads is implemented. Contrary to above, this research proposes a guideline to select the appropriate schedule type and chunk size for achieving optimum performance on different shared memory multicore platform for balanced and imbalance workload. Three multicore technology namely Intel Core i5-2410M, AMD A12-9700P and ARM Cortex-A53 are used for this work. The speedup obtained after turning on/off certain multicore technologies and a selected number of active cores per processor is analyzed. The result of analysis enables the user to justify and exercise trade-offs in selecting OpenMP schedule type and chunk size, and also in choosing the multicore technologies to meet the desired performance gain. Results analyzed over various configurations of multicore platform and workload suggested that under certain constraint different schedule types and chunk sizes have led to better speedup.

The process of teaching and learning during the pandemic has been evolving globally, with many institutions transforming their approaches to enhance the teaching and learning experience. Despite the presence of improved frameworks due to the varied learning capabilities of students, it remains quite challenging to analyse individual characteristic features. Consequently, this research provides clear insights into the integration of the Personalised Learning Approach (PLA) to foster effective interaction with students. However, many existing methods suggest different techniques for evaluating learners in a hybrid mode, where obtaining clear data sets can be difficult. In the teaching and learning approach, if the defined data set from experts is clear, decisions regarding the learning characteristics of students can be made in a shorter period. In the proposed method the PLA framework categorizes learners into four engagement-based clusters using a three-dimensional sensor model and machine learning classifiers. A dual-controller mechanism (master-slave) dynamically adjusts communication intervals and optimizes video transmission, reducing latency and packet loss. The methodology is validated using MATLAB-based simulations with a dataset of 1,700–5,000 learners, analyzing throughput, delay, packet loss, and cost efficiency. The test results clearly demonstrate that the PLA outperforms the conventional method, not only with the parameters mentioned above but also in terms of cost-effectiveness using master and slave controllers. © The Author(s) 2025.

Over the past six decades, the computing systems field has experienced significant transformations, profoundly impacting society with transformational developments, such as the Internet and the commodification of computing. Underpinned by technological advancements, computer systems, far from being static, have been continuously evolving and adapting to cover multifaceted societal niches. This has led to new paradigms such as cloud, fog, edge computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT), which offer fresh economic and creative opportunities. Nevertheless, this rapid change poses complex research challenges, especially in maximizing potential and enhancing functionality. As such, to maintain an economical level of performance that meets ever-tighter requirements, one must understand the drivers of new model emergence and expansion, and how contemporary challenges differ from past ones. To that end, this article investigates and assesses the factors influencing the evolution of computing systems, covering established systems and architectures as well as newer developments, such as serverless computing, quantum computing, and on-device AI on edge devices. Trends emerge when one traces technological trajectory, which includes the rapid obsolescence of frameworks due to business and technical constraints, a move towards specialized systems and models, and varying approaches to centralized and decentralized control. This comprehensive review of modern computing systems looks ahead to the future of research in the field, highlighting key challenges and emerging trends, and underscoring their importance in cost-effectively driving technological progress. © 2024, CC BY.

Feasibility study of a grid-connected PV/wind hybrid energy system for an urban dairy farm

This study evaluates the energy efficiency of an urban dairy farm in Tlemcen, Algeria, by assessing the feasibility of a grid-connected photovoltaic (PV)/wind hybrid energy system. Using HOMER and MATLAB software, the study explores the potential for replacing the farm's existing energy systems with a hybrid system integrated into a low-voltage electrical grid. The HOMER software determined the configuration that resulted in the lowest net present cost, energy cost in kWh, greenhouse gas emission mitigation, and renewable fraction (RF). The selected specifications of the renewable energy (RE) system components, power rates, and costs are based on the local market. The results indicate a net current cost of $106,117.90 and a levelized cost of energy of $0.0959/kWh, with a reduction in CO₂ emissions by 594 kg/day. The system delivers 98 % RF with 4 kWh/m²/day medium solar radiation and 4 m/s wind speeds, and the ideal investment recovery takes 33 months. On the other hand, generation includes 933 kWh/year in grid buys and 42,488 kWh/year in sold-backs. The PV array generates 5457 kWh annually, the wind turbine produces 40,761 kWh/year, and an additional 939 kWh/year is purchased from the grid. Additionally, hybrid power systems in dairy farms reduce energy consumption by 90 % and increase milk production by 40 %, promoting sustainable agriculture. The findings highlight the importance of adopting RE systems in agricultural operations to achieve both economic and environmental sustainability. © 2024 The Authors

ChatGPT, an AI-based chatbot, was released to provide coherent and useful replies based on analysis of large volumes of data. In this article, leading scientists, researchers and engineers discuss the transformative effects of ChatGPT on modern education. This research seeks to improve our knowledge of ChatGPT capabilities and its use in the education sector, identifying potential concerns and challenges. Our preliminary evaluation concludes that ChatGPT performed differently in each subject area including finance, coding and maths. While ChatGPT has the ability to help educators by creating instructional content, offering suggestions and acting as an online educator to learners by answering questions and promoting group work, there are clear drawbacks in its use, such as the possibility of producing inaccurate or false data and circumventing duplicate content (plagiarism) detectors where originality is essential. The often reported "hallucinations" within Generative AI in general, and also relevant for ChatGPT, can render its use of limited benefit where accuracy is essential. What ChatGPT lacks is a stochastic measure to help provide sincere and sensitive communication with its users. Academic regulations and evaluation practices used in educational institutions need to be updated, should ChatGPT be used as a tool in education. To address the transformative effects of ChatGPT on the learning environment, educating teachers and students alike about its capabilities and limitations will be crucial. © 2023, CC0.

This research study proposes a novel hyperchaotic finance system with profit margin and then utilizes the Adomian Decomposition Method (ADM) to tackle the solution of the associated Caputo-derivative based fractional-order hyperchaotic finance system with profit margin. Numerical simulations and analyses, such as the evaluation of Lyapunov exponents (LE), the creation of bifurcation diagrams (BD), the complexity analysis (CA), and the 0-1 test, are used to get a full picture of the system. The results of our study demonstrate the occurrence of periodic, chaotic, and hyperchaotic dynamics in the system. Furthermore, the overall criteria for the existence and the uniqueness of the exact solutions for Caputo fractional-order models are presented. In addition, we present a control methodology for the fractional-order hyperchaotic financial system utilizing the Laplace transform and linear feedback control. Significantly, our research showcases a noteworthy correlation between the analytical results and numerical simulations, emphasizing the soundness and effectiveness of our methodology. © 2024 The Author(s)

Background: Systems Medicine is a novel approach to medicine, that is, an interdisciplinary field that considers the human body as a system, composed of multiple parts and of complex relationships at multiple levels, and further integrated into an environment. Exploring Systems Medicine implies understanding and combining concepts coming from diametral different fields, including medicine, biology, statistics, modeling and simulation, and data science. Such heterogeneity leads to semantic issues, which may slow down implementation and fruitful interaction between these highly diverse fields. Methods: In this review, we collect and explain more than100 terms related to Systems Medicine. These include both modeling and data science terms and basic systems medicine terms, along with some synthetic definitions, examples of applications, and lists of relevant references. Polysaccharides fraction (cellulose and hemicellulose) of biomass is well-received in the market as a source for fermentable sugar, while lignin is typically treated as waste and discarded. Lignin, the second most abundant biopolymer, has enormous potential as a feedstock for thermochemical applications. The potential of lignin as a feedstock for the thermochemical process is determined by the accurate characterisation of feedstock and its thermal decomposition behaviour. This work considers the extraction of lignin from EFB using a green solvent, MASW-LTTM and presents a detailed characterisation and thermal analyses of the extracted EFB lignin. Results show the promising capacity of MASW-LTTM to harvest high-purity EFB lignin with a purity of up to 88.26 %.
