M0Droid: An Android Behavioral-Based Malware Detection Model

Anti-mobile malware has attracted the attention of the research and security community in recent years due to the increasing threat of mobile malware and the significant increase in the number of mobile devices. M0Droid, a novel Android behavioral-based malware detection technique comprising a lightweight client agent and a server analyzer, is proposed here. The server analyzer generates a signature for every application (app) based on the system call requests of the app (termedapp behavior) and normalizes the generated signature to improve accuracy. The analyzer then uses Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient to identify malware with similar behavior signatures in a previously generated blacklist of malwares signatures. The main contribution of this research is the proposed method to generate standardized mobile malware signatures based on their behavior and a method for comparing generated signatures. Preliminary experiments running M0Droid against Genome dataset and APK submissions of Android client agent or developers indicate a detection rate of 60.16% with 39.43% false-positives and 0.4% false-negatives at a threshold value of 0.90. Increasing or decreasing the threshold value can adjust the strictness of M0Droid. As the threshold value increases, the false-negative rate will also increase, and as the threshold value decreases, the detection and false-positive rates will also decrease. The authors hope that this research will contribute towards Android malware detection techniques.

It is shown by particle-in-cell simulations that a narrow electron beam with high energy and charge density can be generated in a subcritical-density plasma by two consecutive laser pulses. Although the first laser pulse dissipates rapidly, the second pulse can propagate for a long distance in the thin wake channel created by the first pulse and can further accelerate the preaccelerated electrons therein. Given that the second pulse also self-focuses, the resulting electron beam has a narrow waist and high charge and energy densities. Such beams are useful for enhancing the target-back space-charge field in target normal sheath acceleration of ions and bremsstrahlung sources, among others.

For trust in software, developers spend much effort debugging to ensure that software behaviors as expected. Spectrum-based fault localization techniques (SFL) make use of runtime coverage of program elements, like statements, branches and du-pairs, and then check codes in the order of the rank of suspiciousness. So, correct elements with higher suspiciousness than faulty elements cause the loss of precision. In this paper, we focus on a situation where suspiciousness calculated according to coverage and outcome, i.e. Successful or failing, is higher than it should be. It is found that when a branch structure is repeatedly executed, which is normal in real-life programs, and all of its branches are covered within a run, a branch related to faults could lead other branches to be doubted. To reduce effects between branches, we do the following things: First, we utilize branches to monitor program behaviors, second, we take test cases with high similarities as triggered by the same fault, third, for branches mentioned, we propose an algorithm to infer which branch is more likely to be faulty in the failure, finally, experiments based on Siemens benchmark set and flex show that our approach is useful to heighten the ranking of faulty elements by reducing suspiciousness of correct branches.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has been widely ad-opted for object identification. An RFID system comprises three essential components, namely RFID tags, readers and a backend server. Conventionally, the system is considered to be controlled by a single party who maintains all the secret information. However, in some practical scenarios, RFID tags, readers and servers could be operated by different parties. Although the private information should not be shared, the system should allow a valid tag to be authenticated by a legal reader. The challenge in designing the system is preserving the tag and reader’s privacy. In this paper, we propose a novel concept of authorized RFID authentication. The proposed protocols allow the tag to be merely identifiable by an authorized reader and the server cannot reveal the tag during the reader-server interaction. We provide a formal definition of privacy and security models of authorized authentication protocols under the strong and weak notions and propose three provably secure protocols. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

The KM3NeT research infrastructure being built at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea will host water-Cherenkov telescopes for the detection of cosmic neutrinos. The neutrino telescopes will consist of large volume three-dimensional grids of optical modules to detect the Cherenkov light from charged particles produced by neutrino-induced interactions. Each optical module houses 31 3-inch photomultiplier tubes, instrumentation for calibration of the photomultiplier signal and positioning of the optical module and all associated electronics boards. By design, the total electrical power consumption of an optical module has been capped at seven watts. This paper presents an overview of the front-end and readout electronics system inside the optical module, which has been designed for a 1 ns synchronization between the clocks of all optical modules in the grid during a life time of at least 20 years. KM3NeT is a research infrastructure located in the Mediterranean Sea, that will consist of two deep-sea Cherenkov neutrino detectors. With one detector (ARCA), the KM3NeT Collaboration aims at identifying and studying TeV-PeV astrophysical neutrino sources. With the other detector (ORCA), the neutrino mass ordering will be determined by studying GeV-scale atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The first KM3NeT detection units were deployed at the Italian and French sites between 2015 and 2017. In this paper, a description of the detector is presented, together with a summary of the procedures used to calibrate the detector in-situ. Finally, the dependence of muon rate between 2232−3386 m seawater depth is compared with a parameterisation of the underwater muon flux. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The KM3NeT Collaboration runs a multi-site neutrino observatory in the Mediterranean Sea. Water Cherenkov particle detectors, deep in the sea and far off the coasts of France and Italy, are already taking data while incremental construction progresses. Data Acquisition Control software is operating off-shore detectors as well as testing and qualification stations for their components. The software, named Control Unit, is highly modular. It can undergo upgrades and reconfiguration with the acquisition running. Interplay with the central database of the Collaboration is obtained in a way that allows for data taking even if Internet links fail. In order to simplify the management of computing resources in the long term, and to cope with possible hardware failures of one or more computers, the KM3NeT Control Unit software features a custom dynamic resource provisioning and failover technology, which is especially important for ensuring continuity in case of rare transient events in multi-messenger astronomy. The software architecture relies on ubiquitous tools and broadly adopted technologies and has been successfully tested on several operating systems. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. One correction is noted for the paper. The exclusion limits for the gluon-gluon fusion production of an A boson reported in the conclusions did not correspond to the exclusion plots shown in figure 6a.
