Summary form only given. Although Multi-touch devices have become common in the consumer world, users have sacrificed the tactile feedback afforded by physical buttons. The Bristol Interaction and Graphics group has been exploring various technical solutions to create the next generation of touch interfaces that support multi-point haptic feedback as well as dynamic allocation of views to different users. In this talk I will present UltraHaptics a multi-point haptic feedback system that allows users to experience haptic feedback simultaneously in multiple locations on an interactive surface. This feedback is created in midair - so users don't have to touch or hold any device to experience it. Another system I will be talking about it PiVOT, a tabletop system where users can come together and view shared content or by leaning forward can get personalised views that are only visible from their particular view-point. This talk will present our recent research endeavors in this direction and present some design challenges.

Explanation, trust, and transparency are concepts that are strongly tied in with users' confidence in, and acceptance of computerised systems. Case-based reasoning (CBR) systems lend themselves easily to generate explanations, as they typically organise and represent knowledge in a way that makes it possible to reason about and thereby generate explanations. The work presented here is a first step towards making a CBR engine explanation-aware. We demonstrate how a plugin for Protégé and myCBR can facilitate explanations for the retrieval phase of a CBR system.

Humour classification is one of the most interesting and difficult tasks in text classification. Humour is subjective by nature, yet humans are able to promptly define their preferences. Nowadays people often search for humour as a relaxing proxy to overcome stressful and demanding situations, having little or no time to search contents for such activities. Hence, we propose to aid the definition of personal models that allow the user to access humour with more confidence on the precision of his preferences. In this paper we focus on a Support Vector Machine (SVM) active learning strategy that uses specific most informative examples to improve baseline performance. Experiments were carried out using the widely available Jester jokes dataset, with encouraging results on the proposed framework.

In order to meet the needs of high-performance and open CNC (computer numerical control) system, first of all, a variety of task features and the real-time response requirements of various tasks in the entire data processing of the CNC system are analyzed in-depth. Then, the data hungry problem in the existing architecture of CNC system is pointed out when the system is running on high speed and high precision processing. On the basis of this, a solution mechanism is proposed that the related task units of the CNC system must be further broken down and the task unit which involves the function of decoding and data transmission could be designed as an independent process or thread that has a fixed implementation cycle. At the same time the special scheduling mechanism provided by the Real-time operating system to improve the implementation of priority, which makes the data of decoding be transmitted to the underlying module uninterruptedly. Thus, the system performance is improved overall. Finally, the experiments results verify that the proposed method is reasonable and correct. © 2011 IEEE.

Collection, processing, storage and maintenance of samples to facilitate long-term cohort studies in biobanks, requires a system to manage samples in an effective way to prevent sample mix up and loss. Sample identification and tracking system aims to reserve data on the samples at all the times, hence RFID technology is employed. This technology allows information to be stored on the tags attached to tubes containing samples. A system is proposed, designed and prototype in the Prostate Cancer Research Consortium biobank. © 2011 IEEE.

As the energy consumption of embedded multiprocessor systems becomes increasingly prominent, the real-time energy-efficient scheduling in multiprocessor systems becomes an urgent problem to reduce the system energy consumption while meeting real-time constraints. For a multiprocessor with independent DVFS and DPM at each processor, this paper proposes an energy-efficient real-time scheduling algorithm named LRE-DVFS-EACH, based on LRE-TL which is an optimal real-time scheduling algorithm for sporadic tasks. LRE-DVFS-EACH utilizes the concept of TL plane and the idea of fluid scheduling to dynamically scale the voltage and frequency of processors at the initial time of each TL plane as well as the release time of a sporadic task in each TL plane. Consequently, LRE-DVFS-EACH can obtain a reasonable tradeoff between the real-time constraints and the energy saving. LRE-DVFS-EACH is also adaptive to the change of workload caused by the dynamic release of sporadic tasks, which can obtain more energy savings. The experimental results show that compared with existing algorithms, LRE-DVFS-EACH can not only guarantee the optimal feasibility of sporadic tasks, but also achieve more energy savings in all cases, especially in the case of high workloads. © 2011 IEEE.

Distributed computing has many opportunities for Modeling and Simulation (M&S). Grid computing approaches have been developed that can use multiple computers to reduce the processing time of an application. In terms of M&S this means simulations can be run very quickly by distributing individual runs over locally or remotely available computing resources. Distributed simulation techniques allow us to link together models over a network enabling the creation of large models and/or models that could not be developed due to data sharing or model reuse problems. Using real-world examples, this advanced tutorial discusses how both approaches can be used to benefit M&S researchers and practitioners alike.

Extensive data generated by peers of nodes in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) needs to be analysed and processed in order to extract information that is meaningful to the user. Data processing techniques that achieve this goal on sensor nodes are required to operate while meeting resource constraints such as memory and power to prolong a sensor network’s lifetime. This survey serves to provide a comprehensive examination of such techniques, enabling developers of WSN applications to select and implement data processing techniques that perform efficiently for their intended WSN application. Scientific workflows are common in biomedical research, particularly for molecular docking simulations such as those used in drug discovery. Such workflows typically involve data distribution between computationally demanding stages which are usually mapped onto large scale compute resources. Volunteer or Desktop Grid (DG) computing can provide such infrastructure but has limitations resulting from the heterogeneous nature of the compute nodes. These constraints mean that reducing the make span of a given workflow stage submitted to a DG becomes problematic. Late jobs can significantly affect the make span, often completing long after the bulk of the computation has finished. In this paper we present a system capable of significantly reducing the make span of a scientific workflow. Our system comprises a DG which is dynamically augmented with an infrastructure as a service (IaaS) Cloud. Using this solution, the Cloud resources are used to process replicated late jobs. Our system comprises a core component termed the scheduler, which implements an algorithm to perform late job detection, Cloud resource management (instantiation and reuse), and job monitoring. We offer a formal definition of this algorithm, whilst we also provide an evaluation of our prototype using a production scientific workflow.

In order to improve the universality and expansibility of the existing CNC(computer numerical control) interpretation technique, a new model of NC program interpreter is proposed based on the format and characteristics of NC program. This model uses the modularized structure. Because of the independence of module function and the consistency of the interface, each module of the interpreter can be design and expansion independently without affecting other modules. Improve the grammatical rules by using EBNF(Extended Backus-Naur Form),which effectively eliminates the uncertainty of grammatical analysis caused by grammatical ambiguity. The error handling module introduced cannot only detect all kinds of interpretation error automatically, but also pointed out the wrong location directly. A modularized interpreter prototype system which verified the validity of the proposed method was developed. The experimental Results shows that the interpretation time is much less than the program machining time, so the modularized NC program interpreter proposed can improve the interpretation efficiency significantly.
