We proposed in this paper an accurate and efficient approach for palmprint identification. In this method, a Gabor wavelet is first convolved with the palmprint image to produce a response image, where LBP is then applied to code the relation among the magnitude of wavelet response at central pixel with that of its neighbors. The method is fully tested using the public PolyU palmprint database. In the experiment, 3864 test images are identified by the proposed method against the 1158 templates. While palm code achieves only about 89% accuracy, over 96% accuracy is achieved by the proposed G-LBP approach. Our approach could identify a palmprint image within 200 ms.

This paper presents a comprehensive analytical approach to maintain queuing delay in a router at a required level through closed-loop feedback control under aggregated traffic flows from various traffic classes. The approach is able to bound average queuing delay but still achieve a high system utilization by regulating traffic arrival rate implicitly through a movable queuing threshold. The queuing threshold is adjusted dynamically through feedback of average queuing delay measurement. Consequently, packets are dropped dynamically with respect to the changes of queuing threshold and the packets loss event served as an implicit congestion indicator. Three major contributions are given in this paper: (1) a discrete time queuing model is developed to derive the mapping table of average queuing delay and queuing threshold; (2) a traffic model that models LRD aggregated Internet traffic through superposing of N MMBP-2 arrival processes; (3) a closed-loop feedback control to control queuing delay at its target level based on expected system utilization. Matlab is used to perform queuing analysis and simulation. Statistical evaluation is performed to show the efficiency and accuracy of the analytical and simulation results.

The discovery of biomarkers and the underlying causes of diseases are enabled through the analysis of biological samples and data stored in biobanks. Biological samples and their associated data are expensive to collect and maintain, and it is important to store and manage them efficiently. During processing, samples and data go through a number of procedures and techniques, which are often in different locations and by individuals with different access permissions. It is essential to maintain the link between the samples and their associated data throughout the processes they undergo. This paper presents a novel system of tracking samples and data from collection through processing to storage and retrieval, which is based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. This system ensures the security and reliability of sample data as well as location-independent recording and updating of sample data, as they move along the workflow.

Shot-based video retrieval with optical flow tensor and HMMs

Video retrieval and indexing research aims to efficiently and effectively manage very large video databases, e.g., CCTV records, which is a key component in video-based object and event analysis. In this paper, for the purpose of video retrieval, we propose a novel method to represent video data by developing an optical flow tensor (OFT) and incorporating hidden Markov models (HMMs). As video is content-sensitive and normally carries rich motion information of objects, optical flow field is first employed to estimate such motion. Then, a shot HMMs tree is built to model video clips in different levels in a database. Experimental results demonstrate that the newly developed method inherits advantages of both optical flow and HMMs in video representation. With the newly developed video representation, in video retrieval and indexing tasks, no need to exhaustively compare a query video shot with all video shot records in the database. Moreover, the novel representation method works well when linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is utilized to reduce the feature dimensionality and further speed up the retrieval procedure.

This paper presents a comprehensive system modeling and analysis approach for both predicting and controlling queuing delay at an expected value under multi-class traffic in a single buffer. This approach could effectively enhance QoS delivery for delay sensitive applications. Six major contributions are given in the paper: (1) a discrete-time analytical model is developed for capturing multi-class traffic with binomial distribution; (2) a control strategy with dynamic queue thresholds is used in simulation experiments to control the delay at a specified value within the buffer; (3) the feasibility of the system is validated by comparing theoretical analysis with simulation scenarios; (4) the arrival rate can be adjusted for each forthcoming time window during the simulation with multi-packet sources; (5) statistical evaluation is performed to show both efficiency and accuracy of the analytical and simulation results; (6) a graphical user interface is developed that can provide flexible configuration for the simulation and validate input values.

The due date assignment and scheduling problems arise in production planning when the management is faced with setting realistic due dates for a number of jobs. Most research on scheduling with due date assignment is focused on optimal sequencing of independent jobs. However, it is often found in practice that some products are manufactured in a certain order implied, for example, by technological, marketing or assembly requirements and this can be modeled by imposing precedence constraints on the set of jobs. In classical deterministic scheduling models, the processing conditions, including job processing times, are usually viewed as given constants. However, in many real-life situations, the processing conditions may vary over time, thereby affecting actual durations of jobs. There are two categories of scheduling models in which the actual processing time of a job depends on its place in the schedule: in scheduling with deterioration, the later a job starts, the longer it takes to process, and in scheduling with learning, the actual processing time of a job gets shorter, provided that the job is scheduled later. We review the results on scheduling with due date assignment under such conditions on job processing as given precedence constraints or various scenarios of processing time deterioration and learning. © 2009 IFAC.

Simulation is a low cost alternative to experimentation on real-world physical systems. In light of the prevalence of web services, issues relating to distributed simulation using web services have come to the fore in recent years. We have proposed a service-oriented architecture for distributed simulations on the Grid (SOAr-DSGrid). SOAr-DSGrid facilitates the development and execution of distributed simulations in different views (i.e., a component-based view for development and a service-oriented view for execution). At run time, one component may require information from another component for execution or decision-making. In SOAr-DSGrid, this shared information from one component to another component is implemented through shared variables. Since two components may execute out of phase, without proper shared variable management, the value provided by one component may be invalid for another component due to the time difference. Since SOAr-DSGrid provides a service-oriented view for component execution, the development of shared variable support also follows the service-oriented methodology. Three different approaches, namely Pull without FutureList, Pull with FutureList, and Push, have been implemented as the internal mechanism to solve the shared variable issue. Experimental results of the performance of these three approaches are also presented in this paper. © 2008 IEEE.
