Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Simulation Packages (CSPs) are widely used to facilitate the creation of simulation models using some kind of visual interactive interface. CSPs have "evolved" over the years and are well used to support modeling demands in different market niches and domains. However, in terms of distributed simulation, there is almost a complete lack of support for interoperability. The advent of the High Level Architecture (HLA) standard makes it possible to connect distributed model components together. The model components can be developed using specific CSPs best suited to the application area. In this paper, a CSP Emulator (CSPE) is proposed to investigate the interfaces between the CSPs and the HLA Runtime Infrastructure. In addition to support for standalone models as provided by current CSPs, the CSPE has some new features needed for building distributed models. An evaluation is conducted between CSPE and Simul8, one of the popular CSPs.

This paper addresses and resolves an interesting question concerning the reason for anthropomorphic user interface feedback being more effective (in two of three contexts) and preferred by users compared to an equivalent non-anthropomorphic feedback. Firstly the paper will summarise the author's three internationally published experiments and results. These will show statistically significant results indicating that in two of the three contexts anthropomorphic user interface feedback is more effective and preferred by users. Secondly some of the famous work by Reeves and Nass will be introduced. This basically shows that humans behave in a social manner towards computers through a user interface. Thirdly the reasons for the obtained results by the author are inextricably linked to the work of Reeves and Nass. It can be seen that the performance results and preferences are due to the subconscious social behaviour of humans towards computers through a user interface. The conclusions reported in this paper are of significance to user interface designers as they allow one to design interfaces which match more closely our human characteristics. These in turn would enhance the profits of a software house.

Time synchronization has always been a critical deciding factor of whether interoperating simulation models using the high level architecture (HLA) is achievable efficiently. In this paper, we propose a conservative time synchronization algorithm that makes use of the manufacturing process flow information (a sequence of steps production lots flow through) in the computation of the request time. This time is used by the simulation federate to issue requests to advance time to the HLA runtime infrastructure (RTI). The proposed algorithm monitors the simulation events that potentially trigger external timestamp messages at the exit step and j processing steps before this exit step as well as simulation events that extend the timestamp of external messages. We evaluated the performance of this algorithm using a Borderless Fab simulation model on the AutoSched AP. The experimental results show that the algorithm performs much better than a straightforward use of the RTFs time synchronization, and the further back we went in looking at the processing steps, the better the execution time that was achieved.

A grid-oriented storage (GOS) project, which aims to support advanced data bank services and data reservoirs for sharing data on the gird, is discussed. The GOS appliance is a disk array that connects directly to the grid using a Globus XIO interface and fits in the thin server categorization. The security model of the GOS is based on the Grid security Infrastructure (GSI). A dynamic estimation scheme for fault-free scheduling in grid systems is also discussed. Most of the grid falls into one of the two categories, planned and negotiated, and dynamic and voluntary. This discrepancy is the main reason behind the complexity in designing robust and fault tolerant scheduling algorithms for both resource categories.

We present two studies that have advanced the design of brain-body interfaces for use in the rehabilitation of individuals with severe neurological impairment due to traumatic brain injury. We first developed and evaluated an adaptive cursor acceleration algorithm based on screen areas. This improved the initial design, but was too inflexible to let users make the most of their highly varied abilities. Only some individuals were well served by this adaptive interface. We therefore developed and evaluated an approach based on personalized tile layouts. The rationales for both designs are presented, along with details of their implementation. Evaluation studies for each are reported, which show that we have extended the user population who can use our interfaces relative to previous studies. We have also extended the usable functionality for some of our user group. We thus claim that personalized tiling with discrete acceleration has allowed us to extend the usable functionality of brain-body interfaces to a wider population with traumatic brain injury, thus creating new options for neurorehabiliation. This paper describes a new environment for the pre-operative planning of total hip replacement. The system is based on a multimodal/multisensorial interface, which includes advanced software visualisation and evaluation modules for the planning and state-of-the-art technologies for immersive interface (stereoscopic display, different six degrees of freedom tracking technologies, speech recognition, and haptic feedbacks). This paper is focused on the final clinical application description. More specific visualisation-related modules are described in other related papers.
