Multicasting is a one-to-many process by wbich a node can send the same packet to a subset of nodes, called multicast group, which have already registered to the same multicast group address. The goal of this paper is to propose a multicast algorithm for mobile ad hoc networks using location information, where a multicast group is definro with respect to a specific network space area, called millticost domain. A mohile ad hoc network (MANET) is a set of nodes that agrero upon fonning a spontaneous, temporar y network so that they can communicate over wireless Iinks despite the lack of any centraIized administration and any fonn or infrastructure. The proposed algorithm benefits from the location-oriented service offered by a glohal positioning system (GPS), which provides MANET nodes (or nodes for short) with their location information when needed. Moreover, the protocol makes use of the Vorono; diagram properties in order to multicast a packet in a selective manner towards its target multicast dOmain, where ouly a small subset of nodes is involved in the forwarding process. These nodes, called authorized forwarders, are identified from the *** Voronoi graph that a multicast source node or an authorized forwarder constructs based on the location infonnation of its neighborhood as well as the target multicast domain. The analysis bas shown that fhe protocol helps minimize the transmission overhead, which would be caused during the forwarding of a multicast packet, while guaranteeing convergence and correctness. Compared to other existing location-based multicast protocols, the proposed one yields more reduction of transmission overhead and perfonns correctly even with particular MANET topologies. A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a set of mobile nodes that agreed upon forming a temporary, spontaneous network in spite of the lack of any infrastructure or centralized administration. MANET topology changes frequently and arbitrarily due to node mobility. Therefore, an efficient routing protocol is required to cope with the dynamic change of MANET topology, which requires discovering and maintaining new routes, in this paper we propose a route discovery protocol based on location information, which could be provided to MANET nodes by a Global Positioning System (GPS). Our route discovery protocol utilizes the essential features of Voronoi diagrams in order to reduce the search space of routes by allowing only a small subset of MANET nodes, called authorized forwarders, to forward a route request. This results in a restrictive, selective route discovery protocol, which significantly reduces the routing overhead compared to other location-based routing protocol, such as LAR.

Over the last four years, a community of researchers working on Grid and High Performance computing technologies started discussing the barriers and opportunities that grid technologies must face and exploit for the development of health-related applications. This interest lead to the first Healthgrid conference, held in Lyon, France, on January 16th–17th, 2003, with the focus of creating increased awareness about the possibilities and advantages linked to the deployment of grid technologies in health, ultimately targeting the creation of a European/international grid infrastructure for health. The topics of this conference converged with the position of the eHealth division of the European Commission, whose mandate from the Lisbon Meeting was "To develop an intelligent environment that enables ubiquitous management of citizens’ health status, and to assist health professionals in coping with some major challenges, risk management and the integration into clinical practice of advances in health knowledge." In this context "Health" involves not only clinical procedures but covers the whole range of information from molecular level (genetic and proteomic information) over cells and tissues, to the individual and finally the population level (social healthcare). Grid technology offers the opportunity to create a common working backbone for all different members of this large "health family" and will hopefully lead to an increased awareness and interoperability among disciplines. The first HealthGrid conference led to the creation of the Healthgrid association, a non-profit research association legally incorporated in France but formed from the broad community of European researchers and institutions sharing expertise in health grids. After the second Healthgrid conference, held in Clermont-Ferrand on January 29th–30th, 2004, the need for a "white paper" on the current status and prospective of health grids was raised. Sequential and parallel Meta-Heuristics for Solving the Single Row Routing Problem

The design of multi-layer printed circuit boards is vital in the construction of complex electronic systems. Wire routing is a crucial step in the overall design process, which can be decomposed into a number of single row routing (SRR) problems. This paper proposes an approach to solve the SRR problem based on parallel meta-heuristics. The development of this technique involves the design of an encoding strategy that allows all possible routings to be uniquely represented and the derivation of cost functions that maximizes the quality of the developed solutions. Further, parallelization of the proposed approach is attempted to improve the computational efficiency. The different stages of the development are backed by experiments to show the pros and cons of the sequential and parallel implementations.

In this paper, we present a novel biometric authentication system to identify a person’s identity by his/her palmprint. In contrast to existing palmprint systems for criminal applications, the proposed system targets at the civil applications, which require identifying a person in a large database with high confidence in real-time. The system is constituted by four major components: User Interface Module, Acquisition Module, Recognition Module and External Module. More than 7,000 palmprint images have been collected to test the performance of the system. The system can identify 400 palms with a low false acceptance rate, 0.02%, and a high genuine acceptance rate, 98.83%. For verification, the system can operate at a false acceptance rate, 0.017% and a false rejection rate, 0.86%. The execution time for the whole process including image collection, preprocessing, feature extraction and matching is less than 1 second. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

This paper presents a novel personal authentication system using palmprints. The technology uses the unique information extracted from palmprints (such as principal lines, wrinkles, and textures) during the authentication process to eliminate possible frauds that cannot be avoided by traditional methods (using password or cards). The uniqueness of features and robustness of algorithm make the system far superior to existing biometric systems. This paper first presents the system architecture construction and the algorithm design. Being a robust and reliable system, it was tested by more than 8,000 palmprint images with very low false acceptance rate (0.02%), and a relative high genuine acceptance rate (98.83%). The whole process time for once authentication is less than 1 second. Finally some possible applications are discussed which could be benefited by using palmprint technology. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Building distributed systems from scratch is known as one of the most difficult and time consuming process in software engineering. A great deal of progress has been made in the development of middleware and techniques to facilitate the process of distributed systems through integrating reusable components and customizing middleware. However, most of these solutions tend to focus on the functional aspects of the components and how to adapt their behavior according to their needs. Although the non-functional properties of the services are equally important, because of the difficulties in representing and controlling them, they are usually neglected. This paper investigates the problem of distributed systems' non-functional properties and describes a framework that presents a solution to the problem. The framework is based on the idea of defining the non-functional properties of the services at the early stages of the design and incorporating such properties within the architecture to ease the process of managing the system at run time. © 2003 Published by Elsevier science B.V.
